JKby John K - Café LA Re: Shake discontinued. And then? - 14 years agoI know one FX shop that switched over to NUKE from Shake, and are pretty happy with it. Shake still runs under OSX, but it's a dead end. Apple may have sensed that enough people have moved on to not bother trying to win them back with a shiny new program. They seem less interested in winning over new segments of the Pro market -- and let's face it, that's their prerogative. JKby John K - Café LA Re: Color 1.5 -- preview over Firewire? - 14 years agoI can get SD out, but no HD presets are available through the IO over FW. Yes, VERY annoying. I'd like to get a decent HD monitor eventually so I'll have to swap out with a Kona card some day. Otherwise, I'm still using my Matrox MXO and an Apple 23" for color correction JKby John K - Color Re: DVX100 24P/ 24PA on DV/NTSC timeline - 14 years agoPedantic? What do my feet have to do with this?by John K - Café LA Re: DVX100 24P/ 24PA on DV/NTSC timeline - 14 years agoThe regular 24P setting (not 24PA) records at 29.97, so it cuts normally with standard interlaced video. FYI most people use "60i" or "29.97" when referring to standard-def footage like that. I have the DVX100B, and all modes except 24PA record at 29.97, with different interlaced/progressive looks. Only 24PA actually record at 23.98, which you wouldn't want to mix with yourby John K - Café LA Re: FCS Upgrade Headache... - 14 years agoThe problems mostly come at night. I have an AJA IOHD and I haven't been able to use it for Color work because of this limitation... Thanks, JKby John K - Color Re: FCP 7: Motion 4 : Color 1.5 ect :-))) - 14 years agoHas anyone actually seen the Text tool in action in v7? Can we confirm that it hasn't changed? I agree that this has been a frustrating omission for years. A mix of much-needed workflow tweaks (markers that SHIFT!) and the usual razzle-dazzle effects and plug-ins. Not the biggest overhaul ever but hopefully a step in that direction. Interesting that they offer a tepid Blu-ray solution, especially outside of DVDSP.by John K - Café LA Re: Compressor won't "un-rasterize " - 14 years agoWhat do you mean by "rasterize"? I regards to your aspect ratio being incorrect (and the term you're looking for here is 'anamorphic'), there is a setting in the Geometry tab labeled 'Pixel Aspect' that may help you here. But we need more info as to what format you're trying to compress to. BTW, the Preview window in Compressor will not change based on the pixel aspect ratio; youby John K - Compressor - Media Compression and Conversion Re: FCP 6.0.6 out - 14 years agoYup, confirmed! Also, what speed are the drives you're playing back the media from? JKby John K - Café LA Re: Larry David, compressed - 14 years agoWait, is your timeline set to H.264?? If so then that's the start of your problems! You should be editing natively (DV/DVCPro NTSC) all the way through to your final output. H.264 conversion is something you do AFTER the final output. Did you make your DVD with the H.264 file? JKby John K - Café LA Re: FCP 6.0.6 out - 14 years agoThat's what used to happen, but I thought that starting with 6.0.5 they had made project files backwards compatible within the 6.x version. My MPro is older so I won't need this, but if a client sends me a 6.0.6 file I'd like to know if I can open it. Anyone have time to test this? I'm in the middle of a project, won't be able to upgrade for a while...by John K - Café LA Re: Slo-Mo Lip Sync - 14 years agoSlow-mo footage with lyrics in sync = play back the audio on-set FASTER than normal. So if your slomo rate is half speed, then your audio playback should be sped up to 200%. Whether you overcrank in the camera or adjust the speed in post, everything should be in sync. I've seen it done on behind-the-scenes of music videos; the band tries to lip sync to a track that sounds like Alvin & Theby John K - Café LA Re: FCP 6.0.6 out - 14 years ago6.0.6 files would be backwards-compatible with 6.0.5, right?by John K - Café LA Blockies, jaggies and posterized areas after color-correction - 14 years agoI'm working on an ad which was shot in color, need to convert it to B&W. We (the DP and I) found a combination of filters that gave us the look we wanted: Magic Bullet Look Suite Basic Black & White, Look Suite Red Light, plus Color Corrector (for small level adjustments). It looks really great, as it provides a slightly fuzzy, dark contrast look that's way better than just cranking downby John K - Café LA Re: HELLA OT - running windows on your production machines - 14 years agoYou can get Quickbooks for the Mac: QBooks 2009 Might be just as much as buying that second drive. Otherwise if you do decide to run Windows then make sure you have the latest Service Pack (SP) installed, run something like SpyBot and if for the love of gawd don't use the internet unless absolutely necessary. The "Best" settings tend to work just fine. Didn't know that about the de-interlace though, thanks. JKby John K - Café LA Re: Best Quicktime Export for DVD from FCP - 14 years agoH.264 looks better on your Mac because it's meant for playback on computers (usually via the internet). DV exports usually look like crap in the QT player, but if you output to a TV screen you would see a world of difference. Your DV SCQT is still the highest resolution master you can make, although you wouldn't send it to everyone (that's what the H.264 is for). That port magically reappeared on the next model. No matte screen option on the latest 15" models but they made it BTO for the 17" at least, an acknowledgment that some users really hate those glossy screens. And certain Apple-only technologies have been dropped in favor of industry standards (ADC vs. DVI). I jby John K - Café LA Re: New MB Pro announced at WWDC 13 inches - 14 years agoAgreed. Outside of matching your current projects' specs of course. I know it's more compressed (especially in the color space) but is the footage really going to look that much better? JKby John K - Café LA Re: New MB Pro announced at WWDC 13 inches - 14 years agoI'm sorry, but whatwhatWHAT?? No express card slot on ANY 15" models now. Great. I'm supposed to plug in my SATA RAID where, exactly?? And extra FW ports? I can't believe they did this. You can get an express card > SD adapter online for like $10, but instead they replace the ONLY expansion slot available in favor of a cheap camera card slot. I'm stunned.
