Re: aspect ratio problems, HELP! - 17 years agoFor future reference, when shooting DV and wanting a letterboxed look (I also learned this the hard way): -Set camera to letterbox setting -put gaffer's tape mask over the viewfinder and/or monitor you are using as you shoot -match tape edge EXACTLY to the lettterboxed black mask-lines -take camera out of letterbox setting Now you will be framing for the letterbox look, but you will have allby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Re: Graeme Natress is Canadian!! - 17 years agoOy! Yo! Congrats on that, matey Graeme, Canadian seems a very fine thing to be. Are your ears and eyes and brains overflowing with factoids of Canadian History? Do you know more about what Canada than your native neighbors? When I meet a US citizenship-test passer, they always know more than I do about this place... Sisters and brothers in post, unite! There are disbelievers and jerks all around this business, and the others, but talent and skill always wins in the end. I am going through a very rough time of it at my current job, hopefully none of my work-colleagues read this forum, but I've just crossed over to be beyond caring too much... detaching, and looking for something WAY better. I caby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Re: G-Tech or not to G-Tech!!?? OWC? - 17 years agoThanks John, Jude, Gregory- Glad to hear Seagates are good. The warranty on the G-Raid is the same as the warranty on the OWC: 2 years. The OWC is much cheaper, AND it has a 32 MB Cache, compared to the G-Raid at 8MB... At this point I am leanomg towards the OWC, though I bet those internal Seagate Raid set up is somehow different than the Seagate firewire raid-0 drive John described so glowingby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Re: G-Raid or ProMax DvBox or OWC for external drive - 17 years agoChris- Just curious, I'm about to get either the OWC 800G or the G-raid 800G, did you like the Seagate better than the Western Digital? Is that why you chose the 600 over the 640? The OWC 800gig also has a Seagate inside, and 32MB of Total Cache (I think the 600 has 16MB), which I am still unclear on in terms of what sort of speed increase it actually means. I noticed the graids only have 8MB..by Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Re: Crop/Distort - 17 years agoThe numbers don't lie! If any of you recall my similar queries back in February, I'll be re-opening that nightmare of "different letterboxing settings source tapes" project for a revision next week, so thanks for the refresher. Love that Motion Tab, Marlaby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Re: G-Tech or not to G-Tech!!?? OWC? - 17 years agoThanks Gregory and John- The OWC looks very good to me. But do you guys happen to know about this Total Cache thing? Is it a real advantage to have 32 over 8? And Gregory, why the OWC just as a back up drive, any particular reason? I wish I had a test for you, I appreciate your willingness a lot. OWC? - 17 years agoThanks Gregory- Are you happy with both? Are they both well-used? Marlaby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Re: G-Tech or not to G-Tech!!?? OWC? - 17 years agoThanks Shane. If people have one or the other, and share their experience, it will be useful, even if the ideal comparison test, as you suggested, does not pop up: Does anyone own an OWC with a seagate inside? Does anyone know the real advantages of 32 MB Cache? What about seagate barracuda's in general, any particular opinions on those?by Marla Mitchnick - Café LA G-Tech or not to G-Tech!!?? OWC? - 17 years agoHello there, I just read the Lacie poll-thread, and another one about drives, very informative, as I hadn't even heard of the OWC's before: I am at this point deciding between an OWC raid-0 800G for $550, it has 2 400G seagate barracuda's inside, and 32MB Total Cache: Or the G-Technology 800G FW Drive for $700 (Hitachi 7200 RPM drives w/8 MB cache in all models): Does the 32 MB make a bby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Re: Timecode - 17 years agoI find that - as a general rule accross lots of different editing platforms, that insert IS more stable than assemble (less artifacts or gliches or dropped frames: those sorts of icky things). For me, it's worth the time, and it's something you can do when you go out to lunch, just set it up and then leave a tape to black... Marlaby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Re: Join the Editor's Guild? Pros? Cons? - 17 years agoForgive my ignorance, but what's "the production hub?" a site? Marlaby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Re: Join the Editor's Guild? Pros? Cons? - 17 years agoAs I recall when I organized the "honorable withdrawal," I will have to pay $900 bucks to reactivate. Flat fee, no more. It's a chunk of change, but much less than 3 years of annual dues with zero union income. Let me tell you guys, after being forced to join a dysfunctional and corrupt union in order to work where I currently do, the MPEG looks really really nice... Is there a post-pby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Re: Timecode - 17 years agoJust a big plug for blacking your record tape, and then INSERT editing-to-tape. Much more stable than assemble! Marlaby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Re: HELP!!! still having this edl dilemma, any more thoughts???? - 17 years agoYes! And the 2 edls looked identical, except the "printable version" was double spaced... go figure! Marlaby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Re: Lacie 500 "Raid 0" vs 500 non "Raid 0" - 17 years agoThanks for that unmounting tip, I will adjust my habits accordingly! I have now decided to use G drives for my personal use, at work I doubt I'll be able to change anyone's mind about the Lacies... And yes, it is necessary to use external hard drives here at the museum, due to the nature of the multiple projects that we need to keep consistently alive. When you suggested a second media drive,by Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Re: Join the Editor's Guild? Pros? Cons? - 17 years agoI have had a really good experience with being in the guild, though after working at a museum that exclusively uses a different union, I put my membership on hold. In NY, there are fewer union gigs than in LA. When I move back I will definitely re-activate. They also have equipment you can use to brush up on skills. I don't know if LA has this, but in NY there's a fund that allows editors to takby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Re: Lacie 500 "Raid 0" vs 500 non "Raid 0" - 17 years agoDidn't realize that Raid 0 was not redundant... now I get it. Thanks, ever-learning, Marlaby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Re: Lacie 500 "Raid 0" vs 500 non "Raid 0" - 17 years agoBut then is a 500 gig Lacie d2 extreme "Raid 0" really only 250 gigs worth of space? I thought it was NOT striped, and that Raid 0 meant something else... I have used lots of Raid disk arrays in other environments (Avid, 844X), but never with FCP. If you hate LaCie's so much, which SPECIFIC drive DO you recommend?? Marlaby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA YAY!!!! Problem Solved! - 17 years agoSo I went back to the 844X system and noticed that the option "print format" was selected in the edl save window! I deselected that and presto, it all looked the same but it worked!!! Phew, Marlaby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Re: Lacie 500 "Raid 0" vs 500 non "Raid 0" - 17 years agoYes - though I don't see the full meaning - isn't it a good thing that they are two different drives? In terms of corruption and keeping media content safe? So that means that the cheaper one is definitely better? Or are there disadvantages of which I am unaware to consider (single vs double)? Thanks, Marla PS-Oh, and "Raid-0" - does that mean that there are 2 drives, but that they aby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Re: still in edl-hell... - 17 years agoThat is a good suggestion, thank you John, I will try that. Marlaby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Re: Lacie 500 "Raid 0" vs 500 non "Raid 0" - 17 years agoWell well well. I am glad to see that my little wuestion has sparked such dialogue! But noone has actually attempted to address the question! I too have used Lacie's for the past 3 years with no problems, one time there was a small prob, but disk warrior fixed it immediately. The museum where I work gets them by the dozen, so to speak, though these new "Raid-0" ones are mysterious toby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Lacie 500 "Raid 0" vs 500 non "Raid 0" - 17 years agoI have to buy a 500 gig drive for the museum where I work, to be designated for a large project that needs to stay alive and ready for regular updates. So this would be long term storage and regular use. I looked yesterday on the Lacie site, and they have these two, the non raid is $429, the raid-O is $349. What's up with that price difference? Is the "raid-)" less stable?
