re: Exact procedure for using Match Hue? - 18 years agoHi all, I'm trying to patch up the weakest link in my FCP knowledge, which is colour correction. I've been trying to figure out the Match Hue function in Color Corrector 3-Way. What exactly is the procedure for forcing a certain colour in the Viewer to match to another colour in another shot (ie. sampling from the Canvas using the eyedropper)?by derekmok - Café LA Re: delete sequence, canvas goes too. - 18 years agoFinal Cut Pro's ability to deal with multiple timelines (ie. Sequences) in the same project file necessitates the above system. Otherwise, how can you know which sequence the timeline you're editing belongs to? I think Dave might be thinking a little more along the lines of Adobe Premiere. Last I used Premiere (years ago, so my memory of the interface might be off), there are no sequences. Thby derekmok - Café LA Re: Timeline freezes - 18 years agoCould try disconnecting the problem clip from its media, then relinking. This "flushes" the clip. Now render it and see if you get the same results. This can help determine where the problem's originating from. On any project lasting beyond 15 minutes, I would also tend to separate out portions of the edit into different Sequences. Bigger Sequences can have more problems.by derekmok - Café LA Re: Internet Streaming - 18 years agoOne of my favourite memories of learning editing was seeing my first editing mentor, Evan Lottman, ask a student questions about the post-production process. That to me was true professionalism. Here was the guy who cut The Exorcist and Sophie's Choice among other things, and he was so confident in his own worth that he could ask one of his own students about something in his trade. He didn'tby derekmok - Café LA Re: delete sequence, canvas goes too. - 18 years ago> Once you delete it and your canvas/timeline goes with it, you can't undo or > get it back. Yes, you can. If you didn't run out of Undos, it'll come right back. That said, you should always be very careful about deleting things in your Browser. Move slow and observe carefully, because many Browser actions are forever. (Make Offline + Delete from Disk, for example)by derekmok - Café LA Re: ripple tool and a strange noise - 18 years agoScott, I wouldn't worry too much about the Ripple tool. Pretty rarely used anyway. It's rare that you know how far to drag the ripple without looking at the shot, and sometimes you spend more time worrying about whether your sound is linked, whether you have music on top, and other things which disable the Ripple tool, that it's probably faster just to trim the clip by dragging its edge, then cby derekmok - Café LA Re: Extenal microphone & connection - 18 years agoWayne, I think you have a point there, but at the same time, I think a lot of us in here are editors -- not necessarily sound designers. Most of us just need something to fill in the story, check the idea, make sure a piece of voice-over writing works for the purpose of the cut. We're not trying to get super-high quality audio, and shouldn't have to spend too much time on it. If we were to offby derekmok - Café LA Re: Extenal microphone & connection - 18 years ago> Josef, are you saying that FCP will recognize the Mobile Pre connected via > USB? I though FCP only recognized devices connected via Firewire. No, that's not true at all. My Tascam US-122 is also a USB device. However, I did have to download an updated driver before it would work properly with the Voice-Over tool in FCP. Your audio device should show up in FCP under Audio/Video Settiby derekmok - Café LA Re: bleeping out cuss words - 18 years agoMy favourite is the immortal McDonald's scene in Coming to America: Hold-Up Man (Samuel L. Jackson): "Who the *hell* is this *airhead*?" "*Forget* you!" Nobody says "motherf**ker" like Samuel L. Jackson, except Joe Pesci.by derekmok - Café LA Re: looping playhead - 18 years agoYou can also turn it off under View - Loop Playback.by derekmok - Café LA Re: Internet Streaming - 18 years ago> The customer has a service provider who wants a file to put on their web site. > I guess what I'm asking is what is the most usable medium for a service > provider to get and convert. Ask the client and the provider to tell you exactly what specific format they want. Saves you guesswork, complaints from the client, and having to redo things.by derekmok - Café LA Re: 16mm on DV , feature editing - 18 years ago> Now I am not able to capture. After capturing for a few seconds, the tape goes > back to the beginning of the clip. There is a time code break on the DV tape, > (or I am not sure if this is something they overlooked at the telecine .) Have you made sure all the In points you set in your logging aren't too close to a timecode break and/or reset? FCP needs pre-roll to start capturingby derekmok - Café LA Re: Attributes Changing - 18 years ago> "Some attributes of one or more of the files you have chosen do not match > the attributes of the original." It seems that when I update a project from > say, FCP 4 to FCP 5, the in and out points of some of the original clips change Jim, In and Out points have always been unstable in so far as how easily they can be changed or cancelled out. Hence the Tascam. > What kind of connectors do most good mic's have, and does the iMic adapter > take them? Most microphones would have male XLR outputby derekmok - Café LA Re: Extenal microphone & connection - 18 years agoI have an Audio-Technica AT3035 cardioid condenser that I think produces really great sound. It's very sensitive, though, so headphones are essential, and it does require phantom power, so I have a Tascam US-122 USB interface. Together they cost about $400. I agree with Wayne about the interface -- for voice-over work, you don't need anything fancy like the DigiDesign Mbox. That said, if youby derekmok - Café LA Re: bleeping out cuss words - 18 years agoI just use the tone from the Bars + Tone under Generator. You can also slow it down/speed it up to get the exact pitch you want, if you're picky about that kind of thing. The great thing about this technique is that you don't even need a media file since Bars + Tone are built into FCP. I use it to create cell phones dialing, hums, and all manners of machinery noises. Works better if you do chby derekmok - Café LA re: FCP certification -- any tests available? - 18 years agoI'm not yet certified in Final Cut Pro and want to gauge how well (or poorly) I might do on the certification exam. Does anybody know of any good simulated exams? It'd be much appreciated.by derekmok - Café LA Re: layoff sequence w/timecode - 18 years agoJust checking on Nick's SimpleVideoOut recommendation -- I use a DSR-11 as well. So if I set the DSR-11 to "Read External TC", it can take a pre-set timecode in a QuickTime movie via FireWire? Is there a reason why FCP is unable to do that but SVO is -- for example, FCP's Edit to Tape requires pre-striped timecode, but SimpleVideoOut doesn't?by derekmok - Café LA Re: curious freeze frame activity - 18 years agoFrank, Dumping preferences really should not mess with your project files, but I guess it's not impossible. One of the safety measures recommended by the LAFCPUG FAQ is that you move the preferences to the Trash, but don't empty the Trash yet. Launch FCP and make sure the new preferences are good before you empty the Trash. One more thing: Since you're trying to get still images to use in iDby derekmok - Café LA Re: an idea for Nattress - 18 years ago> my question is if i am showing a dv image against a screen and i use a film > camera to record the screen would'nt the image that the film camera sees still > be a 24p quality image If you shot video at 29.97 fps, that's how many still images are running per second. If you pointed a film camera at that, you would get 24 fps footage...but what's on the screen would be screwed up becby derekmok - Café LA Re: curious freeze frame activity - 18 years ago> archiving seems a very large storage problem, about 40 gigs for the 50 > minutes, when I checked I remember this problem and was faced with the same issue of not being able to backup my iDVD project. It's intimidating for newbies as it is to learn this program. (Just taught a student last night who didn't know the lay of keys on the keyboard. Poor guy was struggling) But I think one of the great things about this forum is that it's newbie-friendly. And then there are people who use this application professionally but have gaps in their technique...like me. I remembered iDVD as being worse than it is ever since switching to DVD Studio Pro.by derekmok - Café LA Re: Media Manager to trim media files, not! - 18 years agoThat "Batch Export" function is a great recommendation, Nick. Thanks! I never knew it existed.by derekmok - Café LA Re: curious freeze frame activity - 18 years ago<Edited> > grabbed some freeze frames from appropriate segments You have to be more specific. Did you use the "Make Freeze Frame" function in FCP to do this? Those will not export out of FCP; you'll have to use Export - QuickTime Conversion to make them into TIFF, JPEG or other graphics files. In either case, that export will contain the filtering, motion or any otherby derekmok - Café LA Re: Anamorphic to Quicktime problems - 18 years agoWhat does it look like on tape and on DVD? It's highly unlikely that a QuickTime movie file would "look okay in FCP" but not in QuickTime Player, unless one of these applications has an out-of-whack setting.by derekmok - Café LA Re: freezes on capturing - 18 years agoMurali, do you mean it freezes when you try to log, when you set the Scratch Disk, or do you mean it freezes during capture or Capture Now? Big difference.by derekmok - Café LA Re: cannot dissolve on photos when using the motion tab still.... - 18 years agoI think I'm simply having trouble seeing what you're describing, Kate. Any way you can do a screen capture of what you see, exactly, in your windows? Also, though you shouldn't have to do it, have you considered exporting the stills as a QuickTime movie, then applying the dissolves? Finally, what exact image format are you using?by derekmok - Café LA re: Photoshop question - 18 years agoYeah, found it this morning. Thanks. Now to wait for the next time it automatically updates.by derekmok - Café LA Re: Waterfall noise - 18 years agoYou're not the first. Koz' comment wasn't meant to be taken seriously -- there *is* no such thing as a Reshoot filter. He means the only way to truly fix the problem is by reshooting the footage.by derekmok - Café LA |
