Re: Waterfall noise - 18 years agoI *think* when Elizabeth said "live footage", she meant documentary. Overdubbing might be a tad tricky. Maybe you just need to subtitle that part for the edit, then get it to a sound designer who can do more with it. Let's face it, if it *is* documentary footage, people expect erratic sound, so the only goal is to make sure they can hear the voices.by derekmok - Café LA Re: Shaking pictures - 18 years ago> It's only once the project is done and viewed on a tv when it shows up. The "epileptic seizure" can't be seen on a computer monitor. The problem has been there ever since you created the still; you just couldn't see it. When working with graphics, you should always check on an external TV/monitor. Effects - Video Filters - Video - De-Interlace will get rid of it, but you must cby derekmok - Café LA re: Photoshop question - 18 years agoI've had to deal with a grossly annoying feature in my copy of Photoshop. Sometimes when I launch it, it automatically goes into loading "Adobe online components", and almost immediately I get the spinning beach ball of death. If I force-quit Photoshop then relaunch it, it goes into the online component search again. Double-clicking on a PSD or image file to open Photoshop produces tby derekmok - Café LA Re: exporting edited movie from FCP to iDVD - 18 years ago> I am working on an iMac G4 with 80 gig hard drive. Had memory shortage > problems earlier but fixed that by deleting some movie clips... Sounds like what you mean is a storage problem, not memory. Memory = processing capacity, storage = space available to store files. Think of memory as the halfwayhouse, and storage as the main warehouse. 80GB for a 25-minute film is low, depending onby derekmok - Café LA Re: from FCP HD to DVD Sp to Toast - 18 years agoOops, I've been using Toast 5, so I wasn't aware of the upgrade. No menus, probably?by derekmok - Café LA Re: iMovie Vs Final Cut - 18 years agoIt's about the editor more than the tool. Of course, a professional editor would probably feel like a thumb's been cut off when using iMovie, but some Avid editors feel that way about FCP as well. And hell, if your main concern is assembling a story, even Media 100 (with its lovely eight audio tracks and three video tracks) will do it for you. Sundance Channel didn't seem to mind. That's beinby derekmok - Café LA Re: from FCP HD to DVD Sp to Toast - 18 years agoToast is unable to burn video DVDs. It can duplicate a DVD once it's made, but doesn't know how to do the initlal encoding. You have to use iDVD or DVD Studio Pro. > I tried saving my movie to use in DVD SP, and couldn't combine sound and > video First, if you're using a QuickTime movie exported as self-contained from Final Cut Pro, you shouldn't have to combine sound and video as theyby derekmok - Café LA Re: multiple clips on 1 screen - 18 years agoNot at all. Basic picture-in-picture effect. Just shrink the three top clips to 20-25 per cent and place them on top of the background image. You may wish to reduce the opacity of the background to avoid conflict. A drop shadow on the top three images will also help. I've placed over 20 images on top of one another with no problems.by derekmok - Café LA re: Using FCP to cut film - 18 years agoAll of the above helps, Nick -- thanks. I don't think it's a matter of finding the "right" approach, rather making sure my friend makes informed decisions and has thought about the entire post process. Also future knowledge for me, as the director I've worked with the longest has two films in the horizon, a short and a feature, and I'll be confronting these same issues myself before lby derekmok - Café LA Re: de-interlacing programm - 18 years ago> "You get a picture stutter which evokes dropped frames rather than film > flicker." > i've never felt that. I guess that's why we editors aren't interchangeable! Hey, whatever fits our tastes is perfectly fine with me. The only way to tell is by trying it out. I'm actually not that big a fan of "simulating film looks" in general. Or, rather, I don't try to makby derekmok - Café LA Re: MPEG4 Audio Files in FCP HD - 18 years agoThe fact is, everybody uses copyrighted music in rough cuts. The thing that matters is that we get a proper chain of titles for the final product. Also, in many cases we need a way to do the conversion no matter what -- for example, a film I'm cutting now uses music by a dance duo whose members gave their permission, but it's still up to me to convert the files to try to get around the copyrighby derekmok - Café LA Re: NTSC/PAL Conversion in FCP5? - 18 years agoSeems like we've been getting this question a lot. Michael, is this topic in FAQs? It seems to be the consensus that Graeme's Standards Conversion filters are the way to go when it comes to NTSC-PAL conversion.by derekmok - Café LA Re: HELP!! DSR-11 miniDV tape won't eject - 18 years agoIan's paranoia suggestion sounds like the way to go. I'd probably first contact Lightning Dubbs to find out where the break was. Then, *despite* the fact that they told you it's okay, take Ian's first suggestion and avoid running the tape over the repaired section. Because Lightning Dubbs aren't the ones who will pay the price if what they told you doesn't pan out. I'd probably first try to gby derekmok - Café LA Re: play back glitch..freezing - 18 years ago> Basically it freezes the video layer and the audio runs fine then. once it passes > a transition in the sequence it all plays fine. Have you dumped preferences and repaired permissions before re-installing? I guess a re-install would also reset those files. Also, does it happen with new projects, or just the one you're currently cutting? Do you have anything like antivirus runniby derekmok - Café LA re: Using FCP to cut film - 18 years agoHey Nick, Thanks for the extensive breakdown. I was wondering: Is there a better brand of 500GB drives than Lacie? I've never had one die on my watch, but I'm not gonna be the one editing this thing, and maintenance will probably be a little off on this project. I've been liking Promax's SATA RAID arrays and have recommended them to my friend, but what's your take on it (or anybody else's)?by derekmok - Café LA Re: Safari, FireFox, Explorer - 18 years agoI've seen inconsistencies in the display of threads, but not enough to ruin my day. Usually I just press the End key to go to the most current post.by derekmok - Café LA Re: Anybody Else Get This in the Mail? - 18 years ago"Fun lifestyles?" I'm sure everybody on here does 14-hour editing work days as well. It becomes your life. "Fun" in terms of creative, yes. "Fun" in terms of Bermuda sun, sailboats, bikini ladies and huge fat bank accounts...no. Editors are one of the biggest families of likeable nerds on the film scene. It *is* always amusing to go to wrap parties and have theby derekmok - Café LA Re: Smoothing out artifacts - 18 years agoTry Color Corrector and Color Corrector 3-Way. The Color Balance filter is a little antiquated. When you say "artifacts", are you referring solely to colour mismatches or do you have something else going on?by derekmok - Café LA Re: de-interlacing programm - 18 years agoYeah, the De-Interlace filter looks bad when used on moving images in FCP. You get a picture stutter which evokes dropped frames rather than film flicker. I also use Graeme's filters. De-Interlace is best used on still images that look like they're in an epileptic seizure once imported into video.by derekmok - Café LA Re: Autosave Error: Unknown Volume - 18 years agoDid the autosave files work before you crashed? Because it sounds like a hardware or application problem, not a file problem, if autosaves of new project files also have corruptions. Create a new project file on a disk different from the one you're currently using. Save the file and then set the Autosave Vault to that disk. Now wait for the Autosave to kick in. (Set the preference to 1 minutby derekmok - Café LA Re: Need a cheesy glass breaking transition - 18 years agoOkay, I do eat dairy products and would use cheese in my cooking. When I teach editing, I tell people about the nacho factor of the Page Peel...but I *have* used it. Once. Of course, it was a bat mitzvah video, but it did fit in that one instance, and I made it a motif. Love that quotation, Andy. I might suggest another analogy: Cuts are vegetables, dissolves are rice, and Star Wipes and Paby derekmok - Café LA Re: HELP!! DSR-11 miniDV tape won't eject - 18 years agoIan and Nick's suggestions both make sense. If you're doing the re-transfer yourself and you need to stop before the splice to cue it forward, remember to stripe some extra timecode on the receiving tape before you stop the recording, so you have a "buffer zone" and can keep timecode flowing. When I shoot on set and the director needs to see what we've shot right away, I always roll tby derekmok - Café LA re: Using FCP to cut film - 18 years agoHi guys, A friend of mine in the East Coast is planning her feature. She's considering whether to rent an Avid or buy an FCP system -- classic decision. She wants to be her own editor, so obviously her decision would also be based on which platform she's more familiar with, but she wanted to check on a few things and I've been telling her what I know. Here are the issues: 1. I've only cut oby derekmok - Café LA Re: Time Remap - 18 years agoI always just razor the clip and then apply speed to one side. Time Remap and Variable Speed suck. They should just allow us to do a filter with keyframes (eg. the Too Much Too Soon Speeder filter).by derekmok - Café LA Re: Need a cheesy glass breaking transition - 18 years agoDairy and film don't mix. Unless you're doing hip-hop videos. Natch.by derekmok - Café LA Re: titles - 18 years agoAlso, when you say "after QuickTime and MPEG2 export", do you mean you exported your titles in these formats, then cut them into FCP? Or do you mean you have titles in FCP, and when you export a QT of your Timeline, they blur up? Check your render settings, as well.by derekmok - Café LA Re: Recapturing only the VIDEO - 18 years agoJessica, if you recapture your batch list using the same logs as before without changing the file names, then set it to Video Only, you will lose your audio media *unless* you asked FCP at your original capture stage to capture your audio to separate files, or if your audio was from entirely different tapes (ie. not synced). It doesn't sound like you have the latter two cases because you say it'by derekmok - Café LA Re: PLEASE HELP DROPING FRAMES - 18 years agoNobody seems to have mentioned the methods below: For outputting to tape, exporting into a self-contained QuickTime movie first always improves playback. Because now you're dealing with one movie clip, not multiple clips with effects and renders. Render everything, both audio and video (OPTION-APPLE-R and OPTION-R), then export the movie file. Save it to an internal hard disk for best resultsby derekmok - Café LA Re: FEATHER EDGE WIPE - 18 years agoFeathering only works if you have both Feather Edges and Border up at the same time. It always works for me. If yours doesn't, you should try a restart, then trashing preferences.by derekmok - Café LA |
