Re: Agree or Disagree: Cutting w/ Media Composer will provide more jobs and higher pay? - 11 years agoHi Strypes, joeboo, Jude, The main problem for us is that it is a rental. We don't update all of our machines every year or even every version. If we "purchase" it, we own it (or at least a perpetual license, that is). This may be hard to believe but we don't have an operating budget that we can rely on and have to go begging to an administrator, who has other chickens to feed, eby RJ - Café LA Re: Agree or Disagree: Cutting w/ Media Composer will provide more jobs and higher pay? - 11 years agoI'm a FCP7, PP6, MC6 user, but also an educator and this thread is great for me to read. Thanks to all. In the last 5 years, we had moved from Avid primarily to FCP6, then FCP7 and would offer MC (and tutorial based training) on a couple of machines for students' advanced thesis projects, if they so wished. PP6 is offered on one machine and we like it. At this point we need to move on and I bby RJ - Café LA Re: FCPX capabilities - 11 years agoGuys, thanks for taking the time. I'll probably download the trial and muck about with it, so I appreciate the primer. -Russby RJ - Café LA - X FCPX capabilities - 11 years agoI haven't looked at FCPX since its release and I'm wondering about 2 things in its current incarnation: - Does it allow multiple sequences per project (w/o some work around)? - Is the media management/project structure still the same as the first version? That is: structured as events and dates like iMovie & iPhoto style? Thanks for any info.by RJ - Café LA - X Re: Maya animation frame output format? - 12 years agoAs always, I learn a lot by asking a question here. THANKS to all for the responses. -Russby RJ - Café LA Maya animation frame output format? - 12 years agoHi folks, I haven't worked with animation for 6 or 7 years, but presently working with a Maya artist. She is outputting frames in PNG format that I then compile into a ProRes mov. with QT Player before import into FCP7. My question: Is PNG a good format for her to render out in? Never used it before and results look good, but I have always used PSD in the past. Thanks for your advice.by RJ - Café LA Re: General Error -- making life miserable. Time urgent! - 12 years agoDivide the sequence into sections and try exporting. That way you can find exactly what media file is bad. Also, have you deleted all render files and rendered the sequence again? Could be a bad render file. Good luck.by RJ - Café LA Re: Avid MC 5.5 questions ? - 13 years agoA great tip. Saving the intermediary step of having to export from the Sony Browser is a real plus. Thanks once again.by RJ - Avid Media Composer Re: Flash media off-loading software? - 13 years agoCraig, Thanks a lot for info about ClipBrowser. I use it for converting media, but didn't realize it could make a simple backup and verify. Duh. I did a search and ran into this Café LA thread: about some software by Andreas Kiel called "copyClip." I downloaded and tried. It is simple and seems to work, although I want to test more.by RJ - Café LA Flash media off-loading software? - 13 years agoI'm doing tapeless acquisition on a new project and I want to use software that will verify the data as I off-load/copy the camera files from SxS cards to a Raid 1. What software are people using? I read ShotPut Pro is good, but was wondering if I can use Carbon Copy Cloner to do this since I already own it?by RJ - Café LA Re: Avid MC 5.5 questions ? - 13 years agoThank you strypes. Seems like a good feature request, no? That is: make a project frame rate independent.by RJ - Avid Media Composer Avid MC 5.5 questions ? - 13 years agoI downloaded and installed the trial of MC 5.5 on a separate boot drive in my MacPro. I haven't used Avid in many years and I've got a few of questions. (Probably many more to come). I'm trying to import 1080 30p (29.97) and 720 60p (59.94) XDCAM EX material shot on a Sony EX1. The project was created as a 1080 30p project and I prepped the EX1 footage exporting to "MXF for NLEs..."by RJ - Avid Media Composer Re: The cost of plug-ins - 13 years agoLOL. I have AE, but I'm switching to Avid for my editing platform and the round trip is more of a pain than with FCP, as I'm sure you know. Maybe I'll down load the PP trial and give it a spin, but it doesn't sound great in terms of media management.by RJ - Adobe Premiere Pro CC Re: Have you used either of these RAID 5 enclosures? - 13 years agografixjoe Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Wait a minute...you are saying CalDigit told you > RAID 5 is not great for "sustained data rate with > video due to parity checking"? Nby RJ - Café LA Re: Have you used either of these RAID 5 enclosures? - 13 years agoI talked to an OWC salesperson and he confirmed with one of their "development guys" that the CalDigit raid card will work with their "mini-SAS Rack Pro" enclosure. They still say Raid 5 isn't great for a "sustained data rate with video due to parity checking," but that it should work much better than on their esata enclosures. This info is strictly their word sincby RJ - Café LA Re: Have you used either of these RAID 5 enclosures? - 13 years agostrypes Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The Caldigit uses the external PCIe interface. The CalDigit card is listed as having 3 - external mini SAS connectors. It isn't on the OWC recommended cards list for the drive enclosure though. I'll call them, most likely Monday and post answer. Probably a proprietary card as VPiccin says.by RJ - Café LA Re: Have you used either of these RAID 5 enclosures? - 13 years agoI hadn't considered SAS, but that's a surprisingly low price for an SAS enclosure and the performance potential is impressive. I've heard enough discontent with Highpoint's cards that I'll probably steer clear of that. Atto cards are out of my budget for this project, but I might spring for the CalDigit. Thanks for the suggestion.by RJ - Café LA Re: Have you used either of these RAID 5 enclosures? - 13 years agoThank you, guys. Derek, I had a feeling about that lock when I saw the picture of it and you just confirmed that. Seems like a good unit otherwise.by RJ - Café LA The cost of plug-ins - 13 years agoOne of the things most anyone changing from FCP to Avid or Adobe has to face is the cost of plug-ins. From owning an Avid years ago, the price for your average plug-in was steep. Don't know if this is still the case. Something I'll miss with the FCP community is plug-in developers for the program - used Joe's Filters for years and Nattress' filters were great and an incredible bargain. Of course, I'll have to buy a $700 Nvidia graphics card. I dunno.by RJ - Adobe Premiere Pro CC Have you used either of these RAID 5 enclosures? - 13 years agoI'm starting a graphics intensive project and I need a low-cost RAID 5 enclosure. If you've had experience with either of these please give me a thumbs up or down. McAuliffe's Cow tutorials - 13 years agoHi folks, Just a recommendation on those interested in trying FCP X. Watch Kevin P. McAuliffe's "FCPX - Kicking the Tires - Lesson 1" tutorial on Creative Cow. It goes into detail on how important understanding and setting the preferences are before using the program, especially for an experienced editor.
