Plug in for Pan and Scan? - 17 years agoDoes anyone know of a plugin that will make pan and scan easier? I have to pan and scan a 16x9 HD project down to 4x3 and am having a bad time com ing up with a good workflow. Any ideas/suggestions welcome. Best Harry.by harry323 - Café LA Will FCP HD to PAL pass QC in Europe? - 17 years agoI have to deliver NTSC and PAL versions of a 16x9 film. I'm not so worried about the NTSC version, but does anyone know if FCP produces a PAL version that will pass QC in Europe? Thanks, Harry.by harry323 - Café LA Re: "Chasing Buckner" trailer - 17 years agoAs an expat Brit (now US citizen) I know nothing of the game, but found your trailer intriguing and - strangely - atmospherically filled with dread. Well done. Best Harryby harry323 - Show and Tell Re: O/T. My Option key isn't working. - 17 years agoThank you both for your advice. Looks like a new keyboard. Best H.by harry323 - Café LA Re: what first? score or clean up sound? - 17 years agoI suggest that you clean up your basic audio and put in all your sound effects before adding the score. Make sure that you don't have nasty jumps in room tone level and that sort of thing. There truly is almost nothing that is more revealing of a low budget than bad sound -- and nothing that is cheaper or easier to improve. I know that you can cover up a certain amount of bad sound with music,by harry323 - Café LA O/T. My Option key isn't working. - 17 years agoSorry this if off topic, but there always seems to be someone on LAFCUG who can help with almost anything. My option key isn't working. Do I have to buy a new keyboard, or is there a reasonably easy fix/cleaning method? Many thanks. Harryby harry323 - Café LA Re: Nudging the timeline? - 17 years agoI've been wondering about this in silent agony. I was sure that I used to be able to move shots by doing the Option Rt arrow/Left arrow thing. But that doesn't seem to work for me these days. Nor does this trick mentioned above with selecting clip and going, say, +5. Have I got something turned off somewhere in the master control room in FCP? I've been too embarrassed to ask up till now.by harry323 - Café LA Re: "Nasty" - 17 years agoDM Thanks very much for taking the time to look at the stuff. I have taken note of your comments and will follow through on Monday. I'd appreciate your comments on Trailer #2 if you have 2 minutes sometime. The trailers have to be 2 minutes each for delivery purposes and, although I know what you mean about the synopsis giving away the ending, this websie is, at the moment and with AFby harry323 - Show and Tell Re: "Nasty" - 17 years agoKoz, Thank you so very much for taking the trouble to look at the trailers for our little film. Tomorrow I will go through your notes in detail -- that is, the notes referring to content/impact etc. Meanwhile, about the compression .. I would love to make it better, but in FCP I can only seem to reduce trailer down to 9k ... at 15fps. And it was taking forever to load. So I discovereby harry323 - Show and Tell Re: "Nasty" - 17 years agoI have no idea why your browser crashes. That's disturbing. The trailers are in QT heavily compressed. Best Harryby harry323 - Show and Tell "Nasty" - 17 years agoHi All, We shot this film ("Nasty" in Feb/March this year. Several LAFCPUG members helped me get it out of a Canon XLH1 at 24f into DVCProHD. The film cost $75,000 or so in cash. On this site, please go to "Trailer No. 1" and "Trailer No. 2", and please let me know which one you preferred of the two .. or at least which one you hated least. I would also appreby harry323 - Show and Tell Re: 23.976 vs 24 fps. Film output question - 17 years agoThanks for your speedy reply. It was shot on a Canon XLH1 at 24f. I imported it into fcp via the SDI output/Blackmagic card and then messed around in MPEG Streamclip to turn it into 23.976. Many thanks again. Best Harry.by harry323 - Café LA 23.976 vs 24 fps. Film output question - 17 years agoI've got a finished low budget HD feature here called "Nasty". It was edited in DVCPRO HD timeline and captured at 23.976. Since this is an under $100k film it is extremely unlikely that it will be transferred to film, but a friend of mine told me initially that if that was the case I should transfer at 23.976 because that was best for cable etc. and that 24 was for film output. Suppby harry323 - Café LA Re: need reccommendations for a good general HD projector? - 17 years agoThat looks pretty good at $3000. But is it projecting 1080P? It says: Display Native 1280x720 pixels. I imagine that this means it can read 1080 but projects at 720, no? Anyway, thanks for the info. Best Harryby harry323 - Café LA Re: need reccommendations for a good general HD projector? - 17 years agoWayne, I've been looking too. The only 1080p projectors which seem to get good reviews appear to be the Panasonic PT - AE 1000U which comes out in December at a rec. price of about $5000 ... and the Sony VPL VW50 which is also about $5000. and comes out "in the fall". Here goes. I've directed 9 films here and in Europe. So here's the scoop -- briefly. 1. PERMIT Do you have to have a permit to shoot even non-commercial short film in public places? How much is it, for how long? How is it enforced? Would police demand to see the permit if you started shooting somewhere? Fines? Answer. You must have a permit legally. I import the file and hit "Burn" and it basically sits there cogitating for (quite literally, 9 nine hours (yes NINE). I leave it overnight and in the morning a DVD has popped out. I'm on a G5 2 gig. So here's my final blockbuster piece of useless information about the 20.5 frames. Once upon a time, when people cared about the presentation of movies, if you had a big venue, you installed projectors with a moveable sound head. This head could be cranked CLOSER to the picture by about 4 frames in order to shorten the distance between sound and picture, thus making the sound play back earlieby harry323 - Café LA Re: 35mm reels - 17 years agoActually, (he said in a snotty British accent) it's 20 and a half frames. Best Harryby harry323 - Café LA Re: 35mm reels - 17 years agoAlthough I can see Daniel Fort's point of view, I doubt if there is a single theater, chain or independent, which would join the trailers and advertising onto the front of Reel 1 of a feature if they are using a dual projector system. Best H.by harry323 - Café LA Re: Converting Interlaced footage to Progressive - 17 years agoFCP has a deinterlacer in the effects folder under video. Also "Too much too soon" available online free. And you can slap it around in MPEG Streamclip (free from Apple site). And there's Graeme's filter too. You have plenty to choose from. But, beware, you are not going to get a fabulous film look unless it was shot at 24 fps and you'll have to do a lot of gamma fiddling. Best wiby harry323 - Café LA |
