Re: 7D or 5D - 13 years agoI own a 600D (t3i) which is the latest from Canon. Unlike its predecessors it does not overheat. Like its predecessors it has a lousy kit lens which is borderline unusable. I find the 600D handy for getting shots in very confined spaces and where one has complete control over DOF. But do not consider any of these cameras to be movie cameras. And I advise against the 7D or the 5D because whby harry323 - Café LA Re: HDV=quality loss - 13 years agoIndeed, strypes, I have seen many photos of gear-heads proudly brandishing 1/3" cameras with these massive railed "rigs" groaning under the stress of supporting those DOF adapters, but I have never heard of anyone ever shooting anything of substance with them. And they aren't cheap. Harry.by harry323 - Café LA Re: HDV=quality loss - 13 years agoHi there, all you HDV haters. I'd like to mention that, despite the common loathing for HDV, the Canon XLH1 series produces an excellent image, largely due to the Canon glass - or so I imagine. I've shot boatloads of stuff on an XLH1 at 24f 1080 and I have never - that's never - detected any of the artifacts (that I have seen illustrated by other HDV cameras) messing up rapid movement andby harry323 - Café LA Re: Mixed Media Disaster - 13 years agoHi Jeff, If cadences are off on the master those QC guys will kick it straight back at you with a six page report detailing how horrified they are. And cadence issues get a level 3 tag. Any "3" is an automatic fail. I've had QC fail me on a feature where a PA had left a radio headset in frame - even though the headset was lying around next to some stereo equipment set dressing.by harry323 - Café LA Re: recovering corrupt FCP files? - 13 years agoWhenever I get that blood chilling message and prior to going to the autosave vault, I make a duplicate of the FCP project file. On more than one occasion simply making a copy has cleaned it up. Don't ask me why. Harry.by harry323 - Café LA Re: Cinema Tools batch conform problem - 13 years agoBrilliant idea. Thanks. Harry.by harry323 - Café LA Re: G-Raid drives? - 13 years agoI used to buy G-Raids when they were based in Santa Monica. I think they've gone downhill in recent years. Harryby harry323 - Café LA Re: Cinema Tools batch conform problem - 13 years agoHa! You're right. Media is H.264. So I guess I'll have to ProRezzify it and then try again. Thanks very much. Best, Harry.by harry323 - Café LA Cinema Tools batch conform problem - 13 years agoGood afternoon, Happy Editors. I have a bunch of B roll shots at 30fps. I want them to play in my 23.98 timeline without frame skipping - so they will play smoothly, but with slight slow motion. So I go into Cinema Tools, File > Batch conform > choose one shot within my folder of original material and hit OPEN. Cinema Tools then operates for about a second. And when I go to my oriby harry323 - Café LA Re: Corrupt HDV file - recovery? - 13 years agoThey're very good, but I'm too stingy to pay the fifty bucks or whatever. I've used them before. I'll just have to dig out the camera backup tape. But thanks for the advice. Harry.by harry323 - Café LA Corrupt HDV file - recovery? - 13 years agoI have an HDV camera file shot on a Canon XLH1 and recorded to a Firestore Drive which doesn't want to want to open. I've got the Digital Rebellion package, but they don't support HDV recovery. Does anyone have any bright ideas? I do have the camera's internal tape recording as backup, so it can be rescued that way. But it's a drag to wade through the tape to find the right bit and I hoped thaby harry323 - Café LA Re: Compressor vs. MpegStreamclip - 13 years agoThanks very much for the input, Derek and Jude. I currently have a ton of stuff to convert from 720i at 30 to 1080p at 24. I take it that you have done all the testing and that Compressor is the way to go? What a pain. MPEG is so quick and easy, but if you're saying that it's not up to par I will take your advice. Best, Harry.by harry323 - Café LA Compressor vs. MpegStreamclip - 13 years agoLately I've taken to using MpegStreamclip to do conversions rather than Compressor. The quality appears to me to be the same when converting from, say, HDV to ProRes, or when converting to H.264. Am I missing something? I just find it quicker and simpler. But is there a downside that I don't know about? Many thanks, Harry.by harry323 - Café LA Re: SD Card recovery advice needed - 13 years agoThanks for the advice. I managed to recover the data through a $20 program called "Klix" which worked just fine. Harry.by harry323 - Café LA SD Card recovery advice needed - 13 years agoI have a 32 gig SD memory card which has an hour or so of H.264 1920x1080 on it recorded on a Canon Rebel 3ti. It refuses to mount on my Mac. So I have downloaded the demo version of something called "AppleXsoft Photo recovery" and it is currently chugging through the recovery process. It does stabilization and has an anti-jello feature too. I think I paid maybe $150 or $200 for it. I forget. Best Harryby harry323 - Café LA Re: ProKit issue? - 13 years agoHave you read this? It's a sticky from this board. I don't have the same configuration as you, but I did experience multiple mega crashes which were cause by a recent ProKit update (6.02 I think). I followed the advice in the sticky and my problem was solved. Hope it works out. Best Harry.by harry323 - Café LA Will FCP 6.0.6 work under Lion? - 13 years agoWill FCP 6.0.6 work under Lion? I am not going to install Lion until it has gone through a couple of updates, but I do not own FCS 3 and never wanted to spring for it because I didn't see anything in it that I needed. Any thoughts would be welcome. Best Harry.by harry323 - Café LA Re: Producers that don't pay!!!!! - 13 years agoAlthough it's a tempting idea to create a list of deadbeats, the list creator would almost certainly face libel problems. There's also the issue of people like me slapping a client on the list because I didn't like him/her chewing bubble gum. So the whole thing becomes risky and difficult to police. But, if it were possible to overcome those points ... Harry.by harry323 - Café LA Re: Quicktime Reference file question - 13 years agoGot it ... apparently FCP will not make a reference movie from HDV. WTF? I just tried some ProRes and it did it just fine in a couple of seconds. Ah well, thanks for the help, strypes. I turn off unwanted video and audio with the green button on the left. And - yes - I'm exporting as "current settings". I don't get it. I normally do export self-contained, but simply to conquor this multicam thing and because I understood it to take very little time, I thought I'd try a "reference movie". In order to make Multiclip-able files, Mr. Pluraleyes, Bruce, suggests making a QT Ref File for each video angle. OK. The overall length of my Pluraleyes sequence is about 90 minutes - that's the A CAM, if you like, to which B and C cams have been successfully synched already. The B CAM has about 20 shots which are spread over that 90 minutes. Each shot averby harry323 - Café LA Re: Producers that don't pay!!!!! - 13 years agoWow - Shane. That's a bad one. I'm currently pursuing a mere $3,000. I have, in the past, found that these people respond to a piece of paper which trumpets the words "YOU ARE BEING SUED" which is, apparently, what you first see when you open a letter from Small Claims Court (under $7,500 as I recall) Unfortunately the charity (yes) that owes me $3,000 is registered in New York Stateby harry323 - Café LA Re: Importing from a Canon Vixia. - 13 years agoDerek, Thank you so much for coming, once again, to my rescue - and so promptly. I'm not going to edit anything in H.264. The idea is to transcode the H.264 to HDV and use that HDV for my cutting copy timeline.
