Re: Purchas Shake in lafcpug store? - 14 years agoYeah, I know its not available new any longer. There are lots of websites though offering Version 4.1.1. downloads, but not the kind of places I'd like to offer up a credit card number to. Thus my query, if anyone knows of a reliable source....? Licenses: I assume its basically abandonware by now, for whatever reasons known only to Apple. Such a shame, really. It wouldn't have cost themby ClayC - lafcpug Market Purchas Shake in lafcpug store? - 14 years agoI need to buy Shake 4.1.1. I'd order it from the store here but don't see it. Anyone have a reliable source for a download version? Thanks, Clayby ClayC - lafcpug Market Re: Helicopter shoots - 14 years agoCommon wisdom would be to use the highest shutter speed possible. However, the XDCam is not that great at all for fast action, much less low-flying pictures over water and trees, even in the 35Mb/s mode. But, even more important for heli shooting is the mount, the bird, and the pilot. Even more important than all of that is SAFETY (yep, yelling that out loud). Seriously man, it takes a loby ClayC - Café LA Re: Proxy footage, HDV, and ProRes, oh my! - 14 years agoYep, if it's shot, edited and out the door in DVCProHD for a broadcast deliverable, then I second the motion. Stick with the original format. But, I think it will depend on the complexity of the edit, even if the deliverable is just SD DVD. I prefer ProResHQ or 4x4 because if there's extensive cc, or compositing, or collaboration with VFX guys or other post enhancement involved, I'd rather nby ClayC - Café LA Re: Proxy footage, HDV, and ProRes, oh my! - 14 years agoIf it were me, I'd get all the DVCProHD stuff in, and convert it all to ProRes. Just make sure that when going to ProRes by whatever method, you get the Pixel Dimensions right. Then trash the DVCProHD files. No need to keep them, you've got the tapes as backup. No wasting time with OnLine/OffLine workflows, which I totally hate, and often causes problems when there's FX, color correction, timby ClayC - Café LA Re: Alpha channel proRes 4444 difficulty - 14 years agoIn FCP: did you try going to item properties > format and making sure the proper alpha on the files imported from Motion is selected? If you exported ProRes 4x4 from Motion with the background set to transparent, there should be no problem.by ClayC - Café LA Re: FCP certification concerns? - 14 years agoGuys, you're missing an important point. It is definetly worth the very minimal investment because aside from whatever opinions one might have on the value of the ACP certificate, doing the lessons and learning the course material is good training. With or without taking the exam. (And btw, working through 500+ pages of lessons and course material involves a lot more than memorizing a bunch ofby ClayC - Café LA Re: OT Urgent need a fast server in Sydney - 14 years agoJust to round this one out, The Lab Sydney does a great job. They grabbed the files from an external drive directly to their server, thus eliminating the upload time as I had hoped. They then sent a link, which is accessed via a simple Terminal command line. No need for any software installs at this end. Still downloading as I write, but we're receiving about 7GB an hour. Not too bad at alby ClayC - Café LA Re: FCP certification concerns? - 14 years agoI hear you. Totally understandable. Since you're an experienced user, get the course book (Apple Pro Training Series: Final Cut Pro 7, available in the lafcpug Store) and do all the lessons. However simple they may appear, you need to learn a lot keyboard shortcuts and alternative ways of doing things to pass the exam. I posted a link to a useful resource. The link contains all the usage policy info for all to read. Although an anarchist at heart, I do take care when it comes to ownership. Looks like we're going to go with The Lab. I'll post the outcome here in a few days. Might be of use somewhere down the road. As Strypes suggested I could provide a client here, but connection speeds in Munich are very poor, to say the least. The upload would take way too long. Clayby ClayC - Café LA Re: OT Urgent need a fast server in Sydney - 14 years agoHey Strypes, thanks for that link. Nice one. What I need is either someone or some post-house facility in Sydney to get the files up by whatever method. I do have a fast download solution at this end, but I urgently need a partner to work with over there (killer tight deadline, failure is not an option). So far, I'm stuck as the local camera crew in Australia who are shooting a series of inby ClayC - Café LA OT Urgent need a fast server in Sydney - 14 years agoAnbody in Sydney Australia with a fast server that we can bring about 50GB of footage to on an external drive, load that in via Firewire, and then host the files long enough (and provide a link) for us to download in Munich? Needs to happen on the 15th of this month (this Friday, maybe Saturday). Willing to pay for it of course, just need a solution pronto. Thanks, Clayby ClayC - Café LA Re: i have a valid file but.... - 14 years agoIf Color won't read the file, then try using FCP or QuickTime to convert it into something Color likes, such as ProRes. Bring the ProRes clip in and you should be good to go.by ClayC - Color Re: Keyframing Color FX - 14 years agoKeyframing in Color is limited to one keyframe per grade per room. You also of course need a parameter to animate. Depending on which Bleach Bypass tree you're using, you could animate one of it's node parameters, but not the entire tree, because there is no parameter on the output node to animate, it's either active or bypassed. If you want the entire effect to fade in over time, then applyby ClayC - Color Re: using EX3 files in FCP 6 - 14 years agoDid you download the Drivers (if you're importing off the cards) and the Mac Log and Transfer utility from the Sony site? You need these for Log and Transfer to ingest the files. Clayby ClayC - Café LA Re: wanting to know a good 3 button mouse - 14 years agoThree buttons is a minimum requirement for Color. You don't have full access to the UI without one. Other than that, your choice of what works best ergonomically.by ClayC - Color Re: Grading animation - 14 years agoSure. Use keyframes. But, you have to do this in the numeric entry area, not with a curve or slider. For example, in PI room, set a keyframe (ctrl 9) where you want the animation to start, move the playhead to where the animation should end, set another keyframe and adjust the luminance value in the master gain entry. All the rooms can be keyframed, so you could do the luminance ramp in POby ClayC - Color Re: HDV edit system setup - 14 years agoI do some teaching too, here's a few thoughts. 1. Have a look at those new 27" iMacs. If your students are mostly editing their own films in FCP in various HD formats (HDV, AVCHD, etc), these new machines appear to me to be perfect. Add some simple audio monitoring and you're good to go. 2. A Cinema Display or Eizo Color Edge (my personal favorite) is fine for student projects forby ClayC - Café LA Re: DVCPro HD codec in Quicktime - 14 years agoIf I remember correctly, didn't Motion 1 have DVCProHD as an export option? (I wrote a quicktip of the week piece on this a few years back). Originally, Motion was sold separately from FCP. You can probably find someone here to sell you a copy of Motion 1 for close to nothing. I think that should give you the DVCProHD QT components and keep you within the EULA.by ClayC - Café LA Re: OT Apple Meet The Expert, Free FCP & Editing Webinar Tomorrow at 11:00 PDT - 14 years agoPeter, Very good show, really enjoyed it for a lot of reasons. Select and cut together the green in FCP. EDL over to AE. Conform to R3D in AE and go. All you need to consider is what resolution your AE guy should work in. My tried and tested opinion: 4k is way overkill for a broadcast project. Also, unless he has a blazing fast rig with a big dog Raid, his renders (especially with all thoseby ClayC - Café LA Re: RED, ProRes 4444, Trillions of Colors... - 14 years agoLuna, Coupla things: You need the RED FCS3 QT plug to enable the RED workflow in FCP7. This doesn't mean instead of needing FCP. You still of course need FCP to ingest the files. (btw, did I mention that there's this great book in the lafcpug store that explains all this? :-) Correction: Strypes was right, I was wrong about the 4444 encode in AE. You can read and ingest 4444, but youby ClayC - Café LA Re: RED, ProRes 4444, Trillions of Colors... - 14 years ago<<Your AE guy needs to have the latest version of QT which comes with the decoder for ProRes. To render to ProRes 4444, he needs to have Final Cut Studio 3 installed in the machine.>> Latest version for the decoder, yes. But, you sure about the render out? Been doing something very similar lately and got everything back in 4444 from a CS4 only MacPro. No Studio 3 installed.by ClayC - Café LA Re: RED, ProRes 4444, Trillions of Colors... - 14 years agoTrillions of colors is an AE setting based upon using 16 Bit color as the project setting. Your maximum setting for ProRes 4444 (12Bit) is millions of colors plus (the plus means with alpha). There is no trillions of colors export setting from FCP. Btw, your AE guy needs to have the latest version of QT with the ProRes codec to read your files and to be able to send everything back to you in Pby ClayC - Café LA Re: RED, ProRes 4444, Trillions of Colors... - 14 years agoProRes 4444 is great for mastering RED. Just been there done that in 1080p working together with an AE guy, and results were execellent. Go ahead and master with that, and then play out to whatever the delivery spec turns out to be at the end. It will for sure be something less than 4444. No need to use duck necessarily. Bring the RED footage into FCP and transcode to 4444. Cut your shotsby ClayC - Café LA Re: Optimal settings for Beta SP output - 14 years agoQuestions 1 and 3: BetaSP is 8Bit (as opposed for example to DigiBeta = 10Bit). If you've got the drivespeed and space, capture in 8 Bit Uncompressed and edit in that. Or, what he said, capture and edit in ProRes. Works fine and with much smaller file sizes. Question 2: Audio settings 48k 16 Bit. Question 4: the correct Motion setting is NTSC Broadcast SD. Same for LiveType. Cby ClayC - Café LA |
