Re: Beta deck to G5 - 18 years agoOh Ed, we might be able to do BetaSP to HDD (DV codec) for less. But it depends on the amount of material you have, and how urgently you need it. We're a real small shop so I'm divided between all kinds of duties during the week. As it happens, I should be relatively available until Thursday. If you want, you can ring me on Tuesday after 3pm. Or email me. Best, justiby JustinB - Café LA Re: Beta deck to G5 - 18 years agoIf you're doing an off-line, deck control will be all the more important to keep it frame accurate. It's not that expensive either. The Keyspan adapter should be like $75, plus the price of the RS422 cable. However, more and more, I'm thinking you should just have the Beta material moved to DV. You'll lose a little bit of color quality, but not that bad. On the other hand, if you end up investingby JustinB - Café LA Re: DVCPRO HD sequence problem... - 18 years ago<<I believe, and I might be wrong, that in order to get 720p24 footage into a 23.98 sequence you are going to have to reverse telecine all the footage. It is recorded on the tape at 59.94 (as all Varicam footage is, I am led to believe)...even the 24p stuff. Much like 24PA is recorded on the DVX-100a at 29.97, even though it has a frame rate of 23.98.>> From what I understand it's trby JustinB - Café LA Re: OT: See "Crash" - 18 years ago<<You know that there are two movies named Crash? The other was that weird one from Cronenberg. Remember?>> Which one from Cronenberg isn't weird? Although, yeah, that one was especially strange. His "History of Violence," coming out later this year, is supposed to be amazing. I'm looking forward to picking up the Crash (2005) DVD tomorrow.by JustinB - Café LA Re: Beta deck to G5 - 18 years agoYou might want to look at the Decklink SP for $600, oe the Kona LS. Then you would need a USB -> RS422 for deck control. Plus a blackburst generator. Or you could go with an Aja IO plus a blackburst generator. And some kind of basic RAID. Either way you're looking at an investment. You might want to think about having the tapes professionally dubbed to DV for you.by JustinB - Café LA Re: DVCPRO HD - Same question/new thread - 18 years agoIt sounds like your footage wasn't captured at 24p. Your footage should be able to drop into a 24 or 23.98 sequence w/o rendering.by JustinB - Café LA Re: FCP5 -> FCP4.5 via XML problems - 18 years agoThanks Andreas. As it turns out, there was a clip in there that wouldn't cooperate. When I deleted the offending area from the sequence and did another XML all was good.by JustinB - Café LA FCP5 -> FCP4.5 via XML problems - 18 years agoHas anybody had any problems trying to get a project out from FCP5 into FCP4.5 via XML 1? I've been trying to do this, but when the XML is imported into FCP4.5, it only brings in the first three minutes of the sequence! I've made sure the in and outs were at the head and tail of an 85 minute show. Hmmm. I know others have had success doing this. Any suggestions?by JustinB - Café LA Re: FCP HD/G5/ output to Beta SP - 18 years agoTHey have MiniDV tapes longer than 60 minutes now.by JustinB - Café LA Re: offline-online conforming - 18 years agoOne way to do this would be to use Media Manager to create an offline project at the new uncompressed resolution. Then begin capturing all your material again from DigiBeta. Or, you could simply duplicate your sequence, make it uncompressed, and then recapture all your video. Assuming both tapes are at the same frame rate (and properly dubbed,) it should all go mostly well, with some work. Eitheby JustinB - Café LA Re: Finishing on Film - 18 years agoThanks Phil. That was very informative. I'd love to move into the world of film someday so I'm always curious as to the details of how it's achieved. Best,by JustinB - Café LA Re: FCP HD/G5/ output to Beta SP - 18 years agoI think the most cost effective way would be for you to take your final sequence output on a hard drive to a post facility. Otherwise you'll eat the cost of the capture card, the blackburst, and the deck rental. After you get a proper tape, Lightening Dubs can run them off for you, if you need more than a few.by JustinB - Café LA Re: Finishing on Film - 18 years ago<<You'll replace the FCP effects with finished film effects and only then will you hand over a cut list to the negative cutter.>> Would this always apply to standard optical transitions as well? I was under the impression that fades and dissolves can be achieved when the negative reels are printed.by JustinB - Café LA Re: Sequence not playing at normal speed - 18 years agoYou probably resized your canvas by mistake. While the canvas is selected, hit Shift-Z to make it "Fit-to-Window."by JustinB - Café LA Re: JVC GY-100(1) Dream set up??? - 18 years agoFCP 5 should edit the HDV footage natively.by JustinB - Café LA Re: Composite vs. Component vs. S Video - 18 years agoNo, component is better than S-Video. Basically, in order of quality from least to best: Composite (one RCA cable) > S-Video > Component (3 RCA cables, typically colored red, green, and blue) > RGB (5 RCA cables typically colored red, green, blue, black, and white or VGA) > SD SDI. Component or higher are also capable of passing HD signals, although SDIx2 is required for 4:4:4 uncomby JustinB - Café LA Re: External Monitor Suggestions - 18 years agoI'm also an assistant editor and I have a JVC monitor and deck at home. They've worked out great for an affordable home system.by JustinB - Café LA Re: RAm issue with FCP or OSX? - 18 years agoYou might want to look at Activity Monitor once FCP is busy with a tough render. I'm assuming it would grab more RAM then.by JustinB - Café LA Re: OT but worth a look - 18 years agoI saw that too looks kind of interesting. Like a poor man's Shake or something. Using X11 kind of weirds me out though.by JustinB - Café LA Re: 24P DVD - 18 years agoWhat Koz said above. I had a client who just wasn't satisfied by any[/] output Compressor produced, no matter what we did to it before, during, or after. Finally we ran it through a Sony DVD burner, extracted the MV2, brought it into DVDSP and he was instantly happy. Compressor still needs to clean up it's act. I don't know what it's going to when AltiVec is gone. Dark times.by JustinB - Café LA Re: 24P DVD - 18 years ago<<Have others found Compressor to be lacking as a quality Mgeg-2 converter?>> Yes, sadly. Even the very latest version. << If so, what is a better alternative? >> Others have stated that BitVice gives far better results.by JustinB - Café LA Re: Audio drop outs on export - 18 years agoThis is a common problem. Mixdown your audio (Option-Apple-R) prior to export and all should be fine.by JustinB - Café LA Re: Scrambled Field Order - 18 years ago<<The original material was in 24...or 23.98 and we assume 3:2. Some film and some effects, I can check that, but the Avid converted it all to 29.97 before it went to DBeta and then on to us. Our whole world for this job is 29.97.>> So the DigiBeta you got, post-Avid conversion plays fine on an NTSC monitor from various sources? Not just straight from the deck itself?by JustinB - Café LA Re: Benefits of Raid or Sata Drives? - 18 years agoLupin, For now just concentrate on getting your G5 and some extra memory. I doubt you'll need faster drives for a while.by JustinB - Café LA Re: capturing beta to fcp5 - 18 years agoMy initial thought would be to make absolutely certain that your capture settings are correct. Also, do you have a blackburst running to both the IO and the Beta deck?by JustinB - Café LA Re: HD Post Production BLOG - 18 years agoThat's so great to learn. I have a DVC Pro HD project right now that will eventually go out to D5. Dropping it in a 10-bit uncompressed sequence with no render would be bliss.by JustinB - Café LA Re: Hair blowing in the breeze - 18 years ago<<Is os and firmware updates the same thing?>> No. The firmware is updated completely separately. Firmware could be said to be a blending of hardware and software. Fortunately, updating firmware happens far less frequently than software. Still, it needs to happen sometimes for computers, PCI cards, etc. Basically, follow MH's link above. Best,by JustinB - Café LA Re: HD Post Production BLOG - 18 years agoExcellent and informative blog Shane. I've read all you've done so far and I'll stay tuned for the rest.by JustinB - Café LA Re: Ass-crack management - 18 years ago<<I think maybe the client may be doing token cencorship for an audience that finds violence & brutality more aceptable than being exposed to a bare ass.>> I totally agree. On the other hand, violence and brutality have been trademarks of many great works of art from the very inception of expressed human creativity. Who's to say we should censor either with any particular bias?by JustinB - Café LA |
