Re: mpeg 2 into final cut with audio- - 18 years agoI'll second the streamclip recommendation. Basically you need to convert the MPEG-2s to something like DV for editing.by JustinB - Café LA Re: Used video ntsc monitor ? - 18 years agoI'm all for Sony pro products, but for home I bought a cheaper JVC monitor and I'm really happy with it. Hrmmm... Interesting.by JustinB - Café LA Re: Trouble with exported audio in FCP movie - 18 years agoThis is a common problem. Fortunately there is a solution. Before you export, mixdown the audio (option-Apple-R.) This is also what you need to do if laying off right from the timeline. Let us know if that doesn't solve the problem.by JustinB - Café LA Re: FCE 1.0 project --> FCP 4.5? - 18 years agoMuch thanks. I have a client's project from FCE. I'm now trying to find out if it's FCE 1.0.0. Hopefully that's the case and we'll just update and then get a new project file.by JustinB - Café LA Re: Run to your stores this weekend - 18 years agoHrrrrm. Maybe Sunday it will happen.by JustinB - Café LA Re: samsung 930b (8ms) ANYONE? - 18 years agoI'm hooked on the Apple displays. But as far as budget LCDs, I keep hearing that Dell is the way to go. And they say you need to do all the discounts etc. to see the real savings.by JustinB - Café LA Re: using an EDL for other purposes... ?? - 18 years agoWelcome to my daily nightmare! I'm an assistant editor. I generate lists all the time of archival footage and stills used in a show so archival people can track down masters and keep track of how much it's going to cost. I tried using EDLs but it seems like it took more time deciphering what I needed that just doing it manually. I wish somebody would create a plugin or some app that would readby JustinB - Café LA Re: FCS Documentation and manuals up on apple site! - 18 years ago<< Sorry, this was my bad attempt of being very sarcastically humorous. I wasn't necessarily serious on that matter. ;-)>> Oh sorry. You never know.by JustinB - Café LA Re: FCS Documentation and manuals up on apple site! - 18 years ago<<Wait, does this mean we now have to call it "FCS" instead of "FCP"???>> No. FCP is still FCP, except that it is now available at version 5. FCS refers to the whole suite of applications, which include FCP, SP, Motion, and DVDSP.by JustinB - Café LA Re: titles - 18 years agoWhat you're looking for is called "lower thirds." There is a basic text generator for lower thirds in FCP 4, can't remember if it was there or not in FCP 3.by JustinB - Café LA Re: digitizing PAL converted to NTSC DVCAM - 18 years agoDoes it look as bad playing back on a deck as it does in the project? If the transfer is teh sux, then it's just teh sux, and there's nothing you can do about that. See if they'll do an Alchemist transfer, or pay you to use Nattress Standards Converter on it. As it turns out, I had the "faster is better" on these faked stills. So I just used some gradients, noise, burning, and dodging, etc. on the backgrounds. We ended up doing some further tweaking, and everything actually looks really really good. It's so much easier to make things look bad than good. The show went to color correction tonight. I still struggle withby JustinB - Café LA Re: Green snow - 18 years ago<<Lime Green anything is a little magic in digital video. That's what happens when all three video signals go to zero. You would think that would give you black, but it doesn't. Well behaved picture black is the luminance signal going to "zero", but the color channels all settle down to 128. The definition of bright green is when the two color signals go to zero, too.>> Excby JustinB - Café LA Re: Graphics Card Question - 18 years agoI would go with the X800 without a doubt. It's certainly not overkill for Motion. There's not a GPU out there, or will be for quite some time, that Motion can't use every bit of. I'm looking to get an X800 myself, although I'm hoping for the mythological Apple OEM X850 (512 MB RAM?) There have been some issues with Tiger and the X800 though, so you might want to wait for an update from ATI, and/by JustinB - Café LA Re: EDL TO AVID - 18 years agoTalk to someone in advance of your session and ask them if they have any EDL preferences. The default CMX 3600 seems to be the most common, but maybe they will want something else. If possible, email them the EDL and have them open it up beforehand, just to make sure it looks OK. EDL files can be finicky. My experience with audio mix is that they generally want a BetaSP with matching visual TC (by JustinB - Café LA Re: Now in Software Update: Pro Applications Support 3.0 - 18 years agoI get a feeling that this is in preparation for Final Cut Studio more than current incarnations. They also posted a KB article re: Soundtrack Pro and MPEG-2: .by JustinB - Café LA Re: Standards Nightmare! - 18 years agoPal isn't that bad to deal with. Most capture cards (and boxes) deal with it just fine. As do most pro monitors. The thing I would be concerned about is the 3/4" PAL deck. Maybe have them dub it to PAL DV for you.by JustinB - Café LA Re: Faking that "photocopied" look ? - 18 years agoThat seems like good advice Jude. I'll do just that. I'm back at it tomorrow morning. I'll let you know how it turns out. FYI, these are decoded Enigma messages, which is pretty interesting, if you're into that kinda stuff.by JustinB - Café LA Faking that "photocopied" look ? - 18 years agoI'm working with some typed documents from WW II, which were put to microfiche, and then photocopied. The governmental institution "owning" them charges per page for reproduction in a show. But being historical, they have no qualms at all about their actual content (aka the copy) being used without payment. So what I'm trying to do is replicate the general feel of the photocopied documby JustinB - Café LA Re: Anyone using Hitachi SATA II hard drives? - 18 years agoI've not heard of any SATA II controllers for Mac yet. Any ideas?>> If you can't even do that, I don't think it's a permission issue. The first thing I would do if I were you would be to run Disk Utility and repair that drive. See what happens.by JustinB - Café LA Re: Media law - 18 years ago<; Excellent. I deal with copyright issues occasionally as an assistant editor, mostly with archival footage and stills, although I don't handle the actual legal works (thank God.) My experience has been that "time sensitive" is a problem. While you may have urgent need for clearance, generally on their side they're not going to see it the same way. Not all the time of course. Seriously though, learning a different system would be a drag. I certainly wouldn't want to start over with Canopus, or anything else for that matter. The plus side is that I think Final Cut Pro is more ubiquitous than Canopus, so if they're going to learn anything it might aby JustinB - Café LA Re: FCE -> FCP? - 18 years agoSweet.
