If time permits before the shoot starts what I do is dial in a manual white balance setting to a color temp on one of the more colorful powerpoint slides with the lights dimmed down to what they will be during the shoot. I get the color close to being true by simply eyeing the color until it is close to looking real...And, of course, use one of the white balance preset positions for color balanceby Andrew Stone - Café LA

You can save out as PSD or TIFF from Preview but if you have Photoshop, Lightroom and the like I would definately use those ones. The options in Preview for the aforementioned file formats are minimal. -Andrewby Andrew Stone - Café LA

Hi Mike, What Craig was referring to is the "Render Control" pane, the 3rd folder tab over in the Sequence Settings. It is here that you set it to do your timeline render in Apple ProRes 422. Your USB question... I once had a card, it was an SxS card that had an error in the boot block of the card or in the directory tree. Myriad or maybe Optima, if you are using standard typefaces that come with OS X. Century Gothic is a good workhorse typeface but it is too idiosyncratic for our time. If a trad/old school feel is what you want then Century Gothic would be a good candidate. Verdana has little character on "the big" screen and is monospaced for screen reading and web presentation. Forget about using the import under the file menu in FCP. Once XDCAM Transfer software is installed, simply launch FCP and then XDCAM transfer. Do the importing through XDCAM transfer. Once the importing is done bring FCP to the front and then drag the clips (shown in front of the app) into the "bin" you want the clips in and then proceed as usual from there. I have done a transfer using a 3 month old 15" MBP and a Z1U. I used one of the Sonnet 800 to 400 adapters and then a standard FW cable. Worked as expected.by Andrew Stone - Café LA

I would get the Dell 2408 and a color calibration unit. Pantone sells them and there are others. I have one of "last year's" and a older Dell model with same inputs (minus the HDMI). I use 3rd party monitor arms to position the dual displays just so. The complaints levied I would agree with like long wake up time but I just keep mine on unless it is in a horridly long render (ofby Andrew Stone - Café LA

In this instance I would use Sony's free Clip Browser to export the stuff off the card in its native format into a BPAV folder (as it will do in the process. At that point I would then use Sony's XDCAM transfer software to bring it from the BPAV folder into Final Cut. I have the configuration you are talking about Russ. The colors and contrast don't match but I've found it a blessing in disguise. I have my 2407 as a calibrated monitor and the new 2408 using default settings (for video). I preview on the 2407 and use the 2408 as my workspace but that is only because I have the older one calibrated. The 2408 has much deeper blacks and the contrast ratio willby Andrew Stone - Café LA

If you use After Effects 8.0 DO NOT upgrade or you won't be able to render using QuickTime. Has to do with Apple's revised DRM for AppleTV that has been rolled into QuickTime 7.4by Andrew Stone - Café LA

What Jude said. I had this same problem with PSD layered type files that I imported and added fade ins to the layers independently and then a global fade on the imported psd in the master timeline and had the type shifting problem, a "full" render dealt with the issue and only that. I wouldn't be wrapped up in methodology here. First order is to get the files off the drives. Forget conjecture, don't tinker. I wouldn't even turn off your machine or reboot until you transfer the files to a HD that is not RAIDed. Then make a copy of that, then tinker and speculate to your heart's content. This is just a hunch and comes without warranty but if the finder copying isn't working why do you not try to copy using the UNIX Terminal.app in the "Utilities" folder. Given how important these files are I would categorically recommend that you hire or find someone who knows their way around a UNIX command line and can attempt a copy the files in question for you.by Andrew Stone - Café LA

Try zapping your PRAM by holding down "Command-Option and the "P" "R" keys immeidately after you hit the power button on your machine. Might even want to disconnect your second monitor so simplify the setup for the machine. -Andrew Stoneby Andrew Stone - Café LA

Looks good on first blush reading from someone working on it in the trenches. The Apple/Google iPhone related deal plus YouTube releasing H.264 forced Adobe's hand on this. No doubt they have been working on this for ages as the person you linked to stated. I still want to see for myself the implementation. I like your approach Mike. If it works in the PC though you might have a real problem on your hands -- a card that "from appearances sake" isn't bad but won't work in your Mac. If your camera work has consistent lighting in particular clips sprinkled in the timeline, what I do is use the find function, Command F, type in a unique part of the filename for that shot, and then drop your colour correction on the selected clips right in the timeline but first SAVE a copy of your timeline because backing out of this "global change" has to be done manually. I just checked out a recent version of MPEGStreamclip and I do not see flash exporting there. I discovered if you have Flash installed and the Flash Video Encoder installed (which comes with Flash 8 and CS 3) that you can access it through Compressor in a convoluted manner so you don't have to export to MPEG whatever and then do the dance again with Flash Video Encoder. I was going to dive into the XML out of interest to see if it is relatively easy to parse out the lines but I think I will do it on some files that are not "production" ones.
