Re: New Mac for FCS Editing - Advice Please - 18 years agoNo Nick. You monitor out of the DV Deck or Capture Card. Whichever you are using. Note: when you monitor this way, connect the speakers to the DV Deck or DV Capture Card, not the Mac.by Kevin Monahan - Café LA Re: Audio out of sinc... - 18 years agoClips too long or drives are too slow.by Kevin Monahan - Café LA Re: New Mac for FCS Editing - Advice Please - 18 years agoHow about a video monitor gang? Also monitor video from the deck as well. View Menu>External Video>All Frames.by Kevin Monahan - Café LA Re: copy title parameters - 18 years agoKaren, Yes you can. Haven't you tried it out? BTW, you should use the titles from Title 3D and not the legacy generators. But you already knew that, right? ;-)by Kevin Monahan - Café LA Re: OT: Editors steam - 18 years agoYears ago in our local trade rag, there was an ad I'll not soon forget. It's a photo of a woman in lingerie looking forlornly out the window. She's waiting for her man. The caption? Not always convenient for shooting in the field. But in the studio....hmmm.....it's doable. The tape format is HDV, though.by Kevin Monahan - Café LA Re: crawling text with logo like on cnn, fox news, cnbc - 18 years agoCan't you do that with the CHV crawl plug in? Walk ins welcome.by Kevin Monahan - Café LA Re: Titles in V2 V3 problem - 18 years agoI usually use cross dissolves too, but when things get wacky, opacity keyframes seem to do the trick. I seem to recall having done this in the past. Kevin Monahan Not too late to take my class in LA! Walk ins welcome.by Kevin Monahan - Café LA Re: THE problem(s) with Media Manager - 18 years agoYou have to make clips Independent but there's no way to do that within Media Manager. That's the strangest thing, IMO. It's like "a secret" to know that trick, so you can't trust intuition. I'm wondering, when would you NOT want to make the clips independent. I can't think of a situation. Kevin Monahan Not too late to take my class in LA! Walk ins welcome.by Kevin Monahan - Café LA Re: Capture Now - Problem Later? - 18 years agoCraig, If you need to capture a whole roll, it's better to Log and Batch capture the whole deal as a single clip. That way, you never have fewer problems in my experience.by Kevin Monahan - Café LA Re: TIFF, JPEG, PICT - what's best? - 18 years agoNever use JPEGs. Blech. I like the idea of a single layer TIFF. This has been my habit whether it's Avid or FCP. And NO, this is not overkill for keeping your drives healthy. Remember...you live and die by the health of your drives. I suggest some studio audio monitors if you want to hear your true audio which has a much flatter response. What you are discovering about monitoring your audio is one of the most persistent misunderstandings in FCP Land since version 1.0. The news for the 90% of the world monitoring audio from the Mac: DON'T! Why? Derek, you're lucky to have such great advice. ;-) Make sure you back that project file up the web or that USB stick nightly. It'd be a real bummer if you corrupted that project file. A playback of zero frame offset works for me. I also work with a zero offset with DV as well, as it makes for a snappier keyboard. I know my Canvas and video monitor are not in perfect synch, but I know that true synch lies on the video monitor, so that's where I focus my attention. But you also have to be in Safe RT and render at High Quality and Full Frame Rate. In the Sequence>Render menus, make sure the dark green "FULL" bars are checked. Finally, make sure all titles lie on whole, even integers in the Motion Tab. Using Title 3D over the standard (blech) title generators is also helpful.
