Re: Partical generators and After effects - 18 years agoHi Adolfo! Yes, of course Pixar uses After Effects. They gave me a sweet G5 and a 23" flat panel for doing my work. I am not sure if Shake is ever used, but Combustion is definitely not used in the department I worked in, which is "Pre-Viz". We get the original art in a Photoshop file and then animate them with direction from the post-production supe. Relying on a single digital file representing ALL of your work? Dude..... At least back up that project file daily to some space on the web. Or to one o' them USB thingies, no? Likely, you are an editor that maintains the drives-erases them regularly, ensures that a 911 Oxford bridge bus is included and uses a deck or camcorder with a speedy FireWire port. The guys that have trouble thrash their drives, never run Disk Warrior, daisy chain them to a FireWire 200 ported camcorder (the cheaper ones are FW200!) or use drives witby Kevin Monahan - Café LA Re: FCExpress HD vs. FCP 5 Upgrade - 18 years agoHi Guys, I wrote some of the documentation for the FCE HD manual. Although an iMac is faster at rendering, I like the idea of a PCMCIA slot for your portable FireWire drives. Matt Silverman at Phoenix Editorial in SF did this wonderful gradient boxes comp in AE. Cameras fly around as lights shine through them. Zero banding, baby! Microcosm was used to render, of course. Sign up Today!by Kevin Monahan - Café LA Re: preview disabled - 18 years agoThe problem is related to using FireWire devices, like portable drives daisy chained to your deck. You're overloading your FireWire bus and /or causing a corruption with your prefs. Better to use internal HDs with FCP. If you must use FireWire drives, please try using a PCI card with FireWire ports to create a new bus. Yes, the Auto-Save vault works well, but still, I save a copy at the end of every day to my web space or iDisk. That way, if my computer goes down, I can still rescue my show. FireWire drives cause more dropped frame issues than anything else. You don't want to drop frames? Use a separate internal SATA Drive for all of your media. Trash your prefs to restore. The reason behind your Preview Disabled? Daisy chained FireWire devices usually. Avoid FireWire drives or get a separate PCI card to attach them to. Always work with a video monitor connected to your FCP system (as it says in the manual), that way, you'll always be able to see your video, regardless if the L&C window is disabled or not.
