Re: Effect questions. - 12 years agoYeah, I truly cannot talk intelligently about color correction but only repeat what other, possibly uniformed Symphony guys say about Color which isn't really useful for conversation. Symphony might suck comparably, I don't know. I don't understand the Apple Color workflow in terms of effects because I haven't done any effect heavy clip shows yet on FCS and the whole purpose of this post is toby ianedit - Café LA Re: Effect questions. - 12 years agoThanks Tom. I never claimed to be totally knowledgeable about FCS Pro Apps actually just the opposite. I learn new things all the time. That's why I am on the forum. They say those who do not know they do not know are fools. At least I know that there are things I do not know and try to fill the gaps. I probably heard that from Avid guys not giving Color their full respect and attention. Thisby ianedit - Café LA Re: Effect questions. - 12 years agoThe advantage to the Symphony from what I have heard in terms of color correction is that you have secondary color correction and curves and in Apple color you don't. I am not a colorist and don't know Apple Color and can't really speak to that. As excited as I was about your post about the possibilities of motion, it seems as if you may be able to get the same look in FCP in a different wayby ianedit - Café LA Re: Effect questions. - 12 years agoThanks Strypes for the specific references. It seems as if I need to become a "top ten percent" guy with motion and just get hardcore with it and allot of these issues will be solved. I haven't learned motion yet but wanted to make sure it was worth the effort first and it seems like it is. Also the fact that you can utilize sapphire in motion is just a whole other world of possibility.by ianedit - Café LA Re: Effect questions. - 12 years agoDerek: Cool man. I have totally done sizzles on FCP in short form for pitch reels and promos and it isn't as if you can't because you can but some of the techniques in the original post require certain "timeline architectures" that are in my opinion Avid specific. I would like to, for my own benefit, be proven wrong. I don't want to have the "can't get there from here" aby ianedit - Café LA Re: Effect questions. - 12 years agoI wasn't snickering at straight cutting at all. I love it and do allot of that verite based reality stuff on Avid and FCP. But allot of these effect heavy clip shows that are all Avid are in fact requiring tons of what they call flash and trash and that isn't changing and it isn't necessarily limited to small shows. They are in a sense non verite content driven shows with added bling. In terms ofby ianedit - Café LA Re: Effect questions. - 12 years agoThanks Strypes. I didn't think anyone would respond because my post was so lengthy and required homework and because I tend to use "Avid" in allot of my posts but I'm really just trying to translate my skills not have an Avid vs FCP debate but Avid is always my starting point in terms of technique because I have been on it so long. So I think it's relevant for a FCP forum since allot ofby ianedit - Café LA Effect questions. - 12 years agoSo I am the Avid guy who has finally decided to learn FCP after cutting like ten shows ( reality straight cutting ) on it. I ask allot of questions here that may seem basic so sorry for the overkill but I get allot of good answers here. To answer these questions you have to actually watch a clip on my site. If you don't have the time no worries you have to be REALLY into effects, probably a clby ianedit - Café LA Ganging and monitoring duration - 12 years agoAnybody know why if you gang two sequences, the sequence in the source monitor will follow the timeline sequence when you play the timeline sequence but the timeline sequence will not follow the sequence in the source window when you play that sequence from that window? Anybody know how to monitor duration? I was cutting a show to time today that was forty seconds over and it's a pain to constby ianedit - Café LA Re: FCP media management question - 12 years agoLooks like I have allot to learn and experiment with in terms of markers. Thank's guys. I wonder if there is a marker window you can pull up and sort by color for instance I use source markers more than timeline markers when I deal with verite footage, giving sot's a color, broll a color etc and pull up the window and sort by color and pop through depending on what I am looking for. But then agaiby ianedit - Café LA Re: FCP media management question - 12 years agoThanks ya'll very helpful. The ripple marker thing will be cool.by ianedit - Café LA Re: FCP media management question - 12 years agoThanks, and I will do a test ... While you are answering questions do you know how to make markers lock to the footage in the timeline and not sequence timecode. Putting in locators oops I mean markers as notes while screening doesn't do much good if they all get busted out of sync after doing the first note. I usually duplicate the sequence one as a reference and one as a cut and toggle. Ifby ianedit - Café LA Re: FCP media management question - 12 years agoIn response to Derek: Totally offline and not relinkable. I actually used the reel name modification you described, it worked in terms of the bin but when I went to batch it still asked for the old info it was logged as. Still a mystery. Oh, and in terms of doing a test, I did ask another editor, a guy who had been at the company for years and he said it was okay to consolidate the way I did bby ianedit - Café LA FCP media management question - 12 years agoSo I had a two issues at work yesterday as I got sucked into some work typically done by the AE. I will describe the issue, then how I would have solved it in the Avid and how I tried to solve it in FCP and if someone can tell me how I went wrong or what I could have done better that would be appreciated. Sorry to bring Avid into the mix but it's what I know best and I am still learning FCP so Avby ianedit - Café LA Re: FCP in the workplace. - 12 years agoDamn Strypes, no you didn't just make me edit my post. For realzz, I am a pretty simple man. It just all goes down hill when I walk in and I don't have that fancy ergonomic chair. This has turned into a silly rant. My apologies. I will not post again until I have a substantive question about software. Cheers.by ianedit - Café LA Re: FCP in the workplace. - 12 years agoJ. I am not bashing FCP at all. But I was wondering if anyone else had similar experiences. I don't mind it so much and in some ways I kinda dig it. Avid is still more sophisticated but FCP has made great strides in terms of simplifying and demystifying the workflow in terms of time and money allowing folks to pby ianedit - Café LA Re: OT: A Good Editor?? - 12 years agoWow, that's a huge question. I think it all depends on what you are working on. But regardless of what you are working on, a sense of pacing and structure is important. If it's a scripted narrative it really is just a good sense of storytelling. You can download mine here. I think it's a good template and covers all the bases. ianrichardson.netby ianedit - Café LA Re: Looking for FCP workarounds - 12 years agoThanks for all of the advice above. I will give it a go. In terms of trimming I still think Avid just has it going on a bit more than FCP. I actually do trim in the timeline jkl style and just use the trim window for a visual reference. I feel as if the FCP trim function wasn't really thought out. Especially with the lack of sync locks I miss the ability to trim something forward and have itby ianedit - Café LA Looking for FCP workarounds - 12 years ago1/ Know of a good substitute for animatte in FCP. Maybe it was a little too rantish and inappropriate for this forum. I will stick to tech questions in the future and use this forum for what it was meant for. I feel truly educated now and the links to tutorials were very helpful.
