As the others have noted, DVCPro HD is not Prosumer, not by a long shot. All the HD seasons of Good Eats were done on the Varicam in DVCPro HD, all of our feature documentaries and pretty much every HD project we've done since 2003 have all been DVCPro HD shot on Panasonic Varicam or similar cameras. We're gearing up to do up to 13 original series in 2012 that will all be shot with Panasonic Vby walterbiscardi - Café LA - X

You have to give the stations what they want. All stations and networks have their digital specs available. If you give them the wrong thing, they will not air it. Doesn't matter what we suggest, you MUST supply them with the correct file. We supply MPEG-2, H.264, ProRes and DNxHD files to most stations, though the actual specifications of each are different. We don't use the plural eyes workflow since we rarely use DSLR material. If the audio filename is being changed then probably what you need to do is export the files as self contained movies after you sync them. XML to Premiere Pro is working very well for all our older projects since it's regular QT files. Nothing out of the ordinary.by walterbiscardi - Adobe Premiere Pro CC

It was announced yesterday that Dan Desmet, one of the four founding partners of Flanders Scientific, passed away. I am lucky to have not only have known the man and called him my friend, but he welcomed me into his own family. Flanders Scientific has posted an official notice on their website. You just work horizontally in the timeline if you want to. You can set up a custom timeline in FCP to match the specs of the signage display. Then you edit like you normally would. When I've had to do stuff like this, I just build the whole thing horizontally with the text rotated 90 degrees so it plays correctly when standing up vertically. We've run FCP 7 with Snow Leopard since 6 months after that platform was released. FCP 7.0.3 with 10.6.8 has been very solid here, as it is also solid with Premiere Pro CS 5.5.2 and Avid Media Composer 6.by walterbiscardi - Café LA

Depending on which one you get, it's essentially the same computer as the iMac and even the MacBook Pro so they're fine to cut projects. Your connectivity to external RAIDs is somewhat limited unless you go thunderbolt, but as far as cutting in FCP, should be no problem at all except maybe the high end stuff from RED and Alexa.by walterbiscardi - Café LA

FCP's Canvas will mask issues with footage that you will not see unless you're connected to a high quality reference monitor. A consumer TV is set to mask noise and can also mask out issues with original footage from time to time. We replaced all of our old CRT reference monitors with Flanders Scientific for this very reason. They do not mask noise, they show all interlacing correctly (whichby walterbiscardi - Café LA

It's good that Version 2.0 or whatever you guys will call it next year will finally be something that more editors can use. Will be interesting to see where that product ends up in another 2 years. Between what Avid just released and what Adobe has been talking about moving forward, I'm pretty happy to hitch our wagon to both of those horses for now. The 24 port switch is 10GigE throughout. But each of the suites is just getting standard GigE. We can switch that in the future, but just standard Cat6 cable to each computer from the switch. We've been cutting ProRes almost four years this way and DNxHD seems even lighter on the system.by walterbiscardi - Avid Media Composer
