dr, most editors don't find the relative intrusiveness of the autosave objectionable enough to complaining about. However, I know where you are coming from. Way back about 1999 I worked for a year or so freelance on a system Lightworks made called the Lightworks V.I.P. This was their attempt at having a system that could do online work. Pro Caddy, Pro Caddy 2 here. I am doing this in my 8 core. 4 drives RAID 5 with the Caldigit RAID card. System drive in the bottom optical bay. I believe Shane Ross did this with a home made rig.by Sprocketz - Café LA

Maybe a typing mistake? You can certainly bring OMF and AAF files into Avid. That's how we work here. Because OMF's and AAF's from Pro Tools contain the timecode from the original sequence as it was exported from Avid in the first place for mixing in Pro Tools. No need for lining up 2 pops on tracks to sync mixed tracks back into the master sequence.by Sprocketz - Café LA - X

I had trouble getting on. Figured that someone had posted this link to Apple's description of the new version and the responses flooded the server. Maybe not. Westcom mentioned battery degradation over time. Does anyone know the best way to dispose of these UPS batteries when they are replaced? I have a 5 year old 1500a/900w unit that probably should be replaced but I don't want to just drop it in the dumpster.by Sprocketz - Café LA

I have purchased Adobe upgrades using these offers which have varied between 10% and 20% off, maybe up to 25% back in spring of 2009 as the recession was rolling in. Last week I was looking for a P2 to express34 adapter and a salesman at Melrose Mac told me that the problem is that there are no drivers for those adapters running under Snow Leopard. He didn't seem to think any were coming. I was trying to switch field operations completely to our 17" Macbook Pro and his suggestion was to put some money into fixing up our 6 year old Powerbook insteadby Sprocketz - Café LA

I would "characterize" Modo's CA rigging tools as "under development" right now. There is a new version coming out soon, 501. From what I have read it will have a new developers SDK that will allow more easy development of the typical CA toolset. Modo was originally released as a modeler primarily. I don't know much about C4D's CA abilities but I would assume it hasby Sprocketz - Café LA

Hi J. I use Modo. Modo is really great. I used it in a spot I am delivery tonight. Very easy to get very nice looking photo real images that render very fast (for 3D). Very modern approach to the interface and tools. But... It was not originally released as a full featured animation system. Yes you can animate. If you happen to live near an Apple store, stop by and see if they have Logic Studio loaded up on any desktop with a Magic Trackpad. The implementation of multitouch, scrolling with intertia, dragging the sequence layers up and down, is all really nice in Logic. Not so great in FCP, but I would think that the next major release of FC will incorporate what they have done in Logic.by Sprocketz - Café LA

Hi Derek, Yup, the chain of command was trying to arrange all this without communicating with anyone in post at all. The director further confused the situation in his description. It turns out it's much simpler than what I was led to believe. Turns out the shooter was just a guy from the agency shooting interviews for a test group. The format is HDV. It was a Canon camera. Odd question here. A director is asking me about some b-roll footage shot with no supervision out on the east coast. The director is not very tech savvy and from his description of the situation I am guessing the footage was shot with an HDSLR, although which one I don't know. The shooter sent a list of formats he could convert to but the list seemed odd to me in a way I thought indicated tby Sprocketz - Café LA

Hi Ethan, Regarding the "session start" problem. Make sure the Pro Tools session is set to the same timecode type as the material coming from the FCP BEFORE using the "Import Session Data" command. I have had this error come up if the Pro Tools session was set to non-drop and the imported material was drop. Also, is the Pro Tools setup HD or LE? If it's LE the systeby Sprocketz - Café LA

The "look" of 24/30p provides a frame within which to tell stories that happen in places or a time-frame the viewer is not currently in. The look provides a kind of proscenium to tell a story behind which makes it easy for your brain to "suspend disbelief" and go along for the ride. Are they operating under an incorporated business structure of some kind? Do they have a DBA? You should probably hold on to the original media and not give it to anyone until ordered by a court. If what you have said is correct, then YOU are the primary proof it was not tampered with. You have had possession of the originals at all times. They have not been out of your hands. The only way to really show it was not tampered with will be to show the originals to both sides under theby Sprocketz - Café LA

None of these rags, online or print, are ever good at predicting anything. Taking a few bits of info, true or not, and then manufacturing a story seems to be what passes for "journalism" these days at most of these organizations. I have an AJA IO as you and twice I have had serious problems with it that were solved by reinstalling the IO drivers. They can become corrupted for no apparent reason. So strip the IO stuff all out and reinstall.by Sprocketz - Café LA

OK guys, thanks very much for the input. We have scheduled a meeting with myself and the rental facility later in the week. What I think we have settled on for this shoot is to go ahead and let them do the conversion. This will cost about $900/hr of shot material. If this project goes well, we will likely be shooting more with the Phantom cameras and will then probably go with the Glueby Sprocketz - Café LA

We are budgeting for a first time Phantom shoot and are having some problems coming up with cost figures. Instead of just being upfront with all the costs, the rental company keeps adding more gear they want to rent us or, more to the point here, charging for more steps in the post process. dgage, 1. CalDigit has certainly earned a great reputation for themselves. I have two of their products myself. Great products. Expensive for the individual on a budget. 2. Mercury Elite-AL Pro. I have 9 of these drives. The first generations of these were excellent performers at a great price. However, the quality has fallen. They put cheap fans in them that can rattle. It may just be something unstable about a picture coming off a low end tape format playing off an old consumer piece of gear. It could be that the frame speed when you start the capture is fluctuating slightly and confusing FC. There's no pull down happening. You are not capturing an old format like that through a timebase corrector which would stabilize the signal. This is what TBC's are fby Sprocketz - Café LA

Well, I am going to disagree with some of the comments here regarding what exactly makes "the film look" and why you might choose to shoot 30p. If you put two video cameras on the same scene, one shooting 24p and the other 60i, the difference is obvious and visceral for most people. Sure, lighting and production value contribute, but the 24p vs. 60i issue is immediately obvious to moby Sprocketz - Café LA
