Re: Desktop speakers recommendation needed. - 17 years agoDan, Good advice all around. But how to put some of that in practice? Where do you go to find out how to "tune the room"? Especially the kind of rooms most editors are going to find themselves in. I have never edited in a floating, double-walled, bass-trapped edit bay. So given a relatively small hard-wall box of a room, how would you go about tuning it? Is there an online resource foby Sprocketz - Café LA Re: What not to do when editing HDV natively. - 17 years agofilmman, DVCProHD is the codec, P2 is a recording device. You don't need to ever touch a P2 card to edit in DVCProHD. Upconvert as suggested and your good to go.by Sprocketz - Café LA Re: P2 Reality - 17 years agoThe camera will automatically switch to the second card if one fills up while you are recording. I have not spanned cards myself but my understanding is that the "lastclip.txt" file is what keeps track of this and allows the edit system to assemble the pieces correctly. The cards are pretty snug in the camera so I don't think there is really a way to pull one out without jostling theby Sprocketz - Café LA Re: P2 Reality - 17 years agoHey Troy, I have not seen Shane's tutorial so here are a couple things if they aren't in the tutorial. The cards can be hot swapped while the camera is on but NOT while the camera is actually recording to the card you are pulling. You might want to test hot swapping before doing something like an interview that could span across two cards so you were sure of the proceedure. Many people adviby Sprocketz - Café LA Re: P2 Reality - 17 years agoYep, you can do it. I have done it on several shoots. Just make sure that your open sequence is the same format as the camera is set to or you will have problems. You are right however about the timecode. The camera actually sends timecode down the firewire stream but FCP can't see it, unless Apple has added support for that kind of capture in the new release.by Sprocketz - Café LA Re: P2 Reality - 17 years agoHi Troy, Also keep in mind that if it is an interview with the camera on a tripod, you can stream directly to the G-Raid via firewire to FCP and the Powerbook and won't have to be swapping the 8 gig cards if the interview is long. You might want to take a second drive along as well, just copy the files over to the other drive after each take (and every few card dumps) for safety. (Someone getting paid for real work, not an indie feature) How about an agency Art Director? Try telling that guy that the exact color of the logo isn't that important. If you are delivering your show master to a network and they reject your black levels, your response is going tby Sprocketz - Café LA Re: Old Old request - Next Tab keystroke - 17 years agoYeah, I like the "zoom selection" better in Avid. It's sorta there in FCP. When you have the zoom tool enabled you can lasso an area and have it fill the window length but it's crude and hard to select the area you want. Unless of course I am doing it wrong, which is always possible.by Sprocketz - Café LA Re: Recommended camera - 17 years agoHey Johan, I have an HVX and it's a great camera. However, you ought to try some comparative testing if you can. The HVX has a slightly softer image than the others, especially the Canon. Is slightly noisier in low light situations and is generally the slowest of the bunch, needing more light. Just to satisfy yourself test as many as you can. The HVX has an amazing image especially in theby Sprocketz - Café LA Re: Keywall question -- New Camera - 17 years agoNuff said, I guess "Cuckoo" made me go cuckoo! Regarding the HVX and SD I like the camera alot. It's not perfect, the resolution is lower than I would have liked. The variable frame rates are great. The P2 cards are great to work with but the obvious size/price limitations right now can definitely cramp your style. I did a shoot last Saturday DVCPro50. I have one 4gig card. I did 14by Sprocketz - Café LA Re: Keywall question -- New Camera - 17 years agoWell since Graham pretty much resorted to name calling (such a nice guy, I have his Film Effects plug-ins) I have to respond. First, it was my mistake to add the 4:2:2 reference. If you look at my post you will see it was edited. The original post didn't mention 4:2:2. It's been 10 years since this whole thing was originally hashed about and I couldn't remember what the sampling numbers woby Sprocketz - Café LA Re: Keywall question -- New Camera - 17 years agoBetaSP is NOT worse than DV25. DVCam or DVCPro25 were concieved as lower cost options when BetaSP or Digibeta were pretty much the ONLY options. It was never meant to be better than SP, but "good enough" for many including broadcast applications like news. Of course it was and is used for more than that. It is analogue, the sampling numbers don't apply in the same way and there is nby Sprocketz - Café LA Re: HVX footage directly into FCP - 17 years agoThe host mode makes the camera a "dumb" device like a hard drive that needs a "smart" device at the other end like a laptop or a Firestore. For more info check out the many threads related to this at DVXuser.com Post Edited (07-30-06 17:08)by Sprocketz - Café LA Re: HVX footage directly into FCP - 17 years agoI own a HVX and have recorded directly to FCP on a laptop several times for paying jobs. Go firewire. Set up a sequence using one of the easy setups that matches whatever frame rate/frame size/codec you are using. I have not tried recording with "native" frame rates in HD, only the full "24 over 60". The prior comment might be right that you can't record the native frame rby Sprocketz - Café LA Re: Color Correction 20 years ago? - 17 years agoSorry Steven, I meant that in a general way, most of the time editors are not at the shoot. Didn't mean that in this particular situation you were not there or didn't have information of what really went on. There are good things and bad things about editing. One of the bad things is that you can spend so much time fixing other people's screwups instead of contributing creatively. Iby Sprocketz - Café LA Re: Color Correction 20 years ago? - 17 years agoSteven, When I started editing many moons ago, I was frequently frustrated by bad photography, obvious missed opportunities, on and on. But as I gained some experience I realized that there is no point in getting frustrated since most of the time editors are not privy to the constraints under which the footage was shot. Time constraints, money constraints, bad weather, bad luck and yes bad work.by Sprocketz - Café LA Re: EDL change list software - 17 years agoIs the sound department using Pro Tools? As far as I know, there is no software for FCP for this but there is a solution called Virtual Katy. It can take CMX EDL's and create change lists that update ProTools sessions. I am not entirely sure it would take FCP EDL's as it's kind of meant for the Avid crowd but as long as it takes CMX I don't know why not. It's for Pro Tools only though. Panasonic did not implement a method of auto-incrementing any of the fields. It would have been nice if they just allowed shot #'s to increment. To fully implement metadata features means attaching a keyboard to the camera. Some of the shooters didn't know what timecode was. The editors are struggling with it. I think that at some level the producers realized that there might be problems and thought that a "finishing house" would just be able to fix everything. I have an HVX200 and I think the Pany codec looks really good but of course not as good as uncompressed. A side note: I recently talked with an assistant editor I have hired in the past. She is working on a new (yet to air) reality show for one of the cable networks. They are shooting HDV with the Z1. Would it be your recommendation to keep actual HDV media OFF of the edit system and only use transcoded uncompressed media or perhaps DVCProHD? What in your experience produces nice results without going all the way to uncompressed 12bit 444?by Sprocketz - Café LA Re: Shake is now ONLY $499 - 17 years agoI forgot to take my meds today and my bipolar disorder has been creeping up on me all day. They were kind of lonely around the backside of the Matrox booth and jumped all over me when they had someone to show it to. It's a very nice product. There should be some reviews coming since they are going to be sending evaluation units out soon. If you really have to go with surround and PTLE, your sound guy might want to get Digital Performer assuming he is on a Mac. I saw the device at NAB and specifically asked them about using it with Avid and they didn't know if it would work and hadn't tried it. I kind of doubt it would work.
