Re: Swap/shuffle edits - 17 years agoThe key is to look at the cursor icon. If it looks like an arrow that goes left or right but the head of the arrow is curved downward, that indicates that it'll swap edits. If the arrow is pointed straight down or straight to the right, that indicates an overwrite or insert edit. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Plugin finickiness - 17 years agoNot to hijack your thread Shane, but how are you using it as a transition in FCP? Can you just drop it in your FCP plugins folder? Or did you take it to motion, do the transition and then render the .motn file in FCP? Just curious cuz I haven't used it yet. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Strange Bruce the Wonder Yak mention... - 17 years agoI'll admit, in about 8 years of editing in FCP, I've never seen Bruce. However, an assignment editor at my job sent me a link to a page with some strange stream of conscience text that's written into the resource file of Final Cut. It's not a hint or way of finding Bruce, probably some programmer or several programmers hopped up on too much caffeine, maybe on a deadline. I had a call last night from work where my editors were unable to transfer a clip from the FCP to our NAS environment. Here are the workflow specifics: OS 10.4.9 FCP 5.1.4 QT 7.1.3 The media is XDCam in the DVCam codec digitized via FW into FCP and cut in a DV/NTSC sequence. The sequence was finished and we typically export a QT movie straighby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Compressed Quicktime MP4 out of synch...why? - 17 years agoCouple of things to check. Look at the Item Properties of your audio by selecting it and hitting CMD-9. The audio rate should be 48kHz, but sometimes audio can be digitized or imported with a rate slightly off. Something like 48.00009kHz. FCP tends to compensate for it, but it can throw compression software off. Also, try exporting a QT movie and then compressing it in Compressor instead oby Andy Neil - Café LA Quicktime 7.1.5 - 17 years agoI checked around on the forum a bit and couldn't find anything specific about this, but I thought I'd ask if anyone has or has heard of any problems with FCP 5.1.3 or 4 and QT 7.1.5. Is it a pretty stable version with FCP? I saw the thread on 10.4.9 and FCP 5.1.3 with Intel Mac Pros, so I'm wary there as my home computer is the Intel variety. However, I have several Power PC G5s at work andby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Dumb question re motion tab/favorites? - 17 years agoActually, Marla, I'm not sure that particular example will work the way you want. I believe that if you uncheck the "Scale Attribute Times" box, it'll paste keyframes starting from the 1st frame of the new clip. Meaning: Clip 1 is 30 frames long. You create a keyframed opacity fade out on the last 10 frames so the first keyframe (100%) is on the 20th frame and the second on the 30tby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: compressing quicktimes - 17 years agoWhy don't you let us know what you tried so we don't offer advice that you've already done? Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Dumb question re motion tab/favorites? - 17 years agoQuoteDon't forget the oh so simple technique of copying (Cmd-C) a clip that has the motion tab settings you like , then selecting the other clips you would like to have the same settings, and Pasting Attributes (Cmd-V) and checking the attributes you want to apply. Real easy for the small tasks. Just remember that Paste Attributes' shortcut is OPT-V not CMD-V which is just regular-old paste.by Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Should you mess with SPEED while shooting or do it in post? - 17 years agoYou'll probably need to crank the shutter speed up higher than 1/200 to acheive that strobe effect you're looking for. On my camera (XL-1), I'll go upwards of 1/500. Actually, 1/1000 looks pretty good. Try shooting a helicopter or windmill for testing the shutter speed you want. With a high enough shutter, the spinning blades will be crystal clear. derek said: "There's also the Sixby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Should you mess with colors while shooting or do it in post? - 17 years agoThat isn't to say that you shouldn't ever do it in production. But if the effect you are trying for is as stylized as the Matrix, definitely post is a better idea. However, lighting is becoming a lost art in low budget productions when people can get their hands on Magic Bullet or some other like software. Color cards are great for warming or cooling down footage in the production stage but yoby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: MAC PRO - 17 years agoI think Adobe just released a beta version of Photoshop CS3 last Friday. There is an article on how fast it runs on the new Intel Macs. macworld I think you just have to see what you'd need it for right now. I just bought one, and am running FCP, Photoshop CS1, After Effects with no problems. I went from a G4 to the Mac Pro so perhaps my perspective is tilted regarding people's complaintby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: 5.1.2 speed change update issue? - 17 years agoJude, I tested your request as you had it and I did NOT get your result. With clip in timeline, I hit CMD+J to change speed to 150. This is a preview effect on my machine, but I rendered anyway to about half-way. Selected clip again and changed speed to 200. The entire clip went green preview again and seemed to be playing at only one speed (200). Perhaps you have some kind of corruption.by Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Source Mono Audio Mysteriously Turns to Stereo - 17 years agoIt's hard to say without looking at the project, but there are a couple of things you can do to try and figure out what is going on. First, instead of double clicking clips and loading them into the monitor, select the clip in the timeline and hit CMD+9 to bring up it's item properties. Confirm that the clip in the timeline is in fact, stereo. Do the same with clips in the browser. This wilby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Another Anamorphic question........... - 17 years agoIt sounds like your sequence settings are set to 16:9. 720X480 is standard 4:3 aspect ratio. I forget what the pixel count has to be for a widescreeen image but you could search the forum and find it I'm sure. Or else export a still from your sequence and bring it in to Photoshop and see what it's ratio is. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Sorry, but I had to share - 17 years agoI've been editing with FCP since version 1.5 and when you work with a program that long, you sometimes lose track of little things that were added in later years to make your life easier especially if you're used to your workaround. Anyway, I just bought a new Mac Pro (finally I have new technology when it's actually new) and was reinstalling all my programs. I have a large number of clips converted from MXF to QT using the XDCam Transfer app by Sony/Apple. However, I'm editing on FCP 4.5 and curiously enough, It can't read the clips even though they are only DV-NTSC quicktimes. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that I'm using QT 6.something on my machine and the machine that did the Xfer wasby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Question for Graeme - DV codecs and aspect ratios - 17 years agoThanks for the input guys. I haven't yet tried a quicktime export from FCP into the Axio, but in reality Premiere isn't really the problem. To provide some background: The full production system is by a company called Fission. They have a fully integrated solution for injest, editing, and broadcast playout which uses Matrox cards for the media generation. This solution was purchased afterby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Question for Graeme - DV codecs and aspect ratios - 17 years agoThanks Koz. I tried that but when I exported back to AVI, it wouldn't play in Premiere and even crashed the system. I'm thinking that the issue might be one of proprietary codecs. Matrox Axios are custom hardware boards designed for Premiere. Even though FCP can read their DV codec without problem is it possible that the Axio needs to render any clip that's not encoded in the Matrox DVCPro coby Andy Neil - Café LA Question for Graeme - DV codecs and aspect ratios - 17 years agoHi Graeme, I aim this question at you since you seem to be one of the most technically-minded people on this forum, but certainly anyone who has the answer.... I'm working with a company who are using Matrox Axios in their workflow and originating content as 720X486 (.9 aspect) avi files. The codec is called Matrox DVCPro, but seems to be essentially the same as regular DV. Sin City-esque visuals for a show about hostage negotiations. Interestingly enough, it reminded me of a film called, "Hostage" with Bruce Willis where he played a former hostage negotiator. The opening credits for that film are a lot like the opening credits for this show.by Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Nudging the timeline? - 17 years agoWell Harry, are you double-clicking the clip you are trying to move, or single-clicking it. Double-clicking will load the clip into the viewer and make the viewer active. The timeline has to be active for the nudge shortcut to work. In addition to OPT+lt or rt arrow, you can simply hit comma (nudge back 1 frame), or period (nudge forward one frame). And on all these shortcuts, holding the sby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Basic 3D jumpy... - 18 years agoWell, sort of. I checked fixed resolution, and when it confirmed 720 X 480, and hit ok, it croped my lower third. Should I have fixed the resolution higher? Andyby Andy Neil - Motion Basic 3D jumpy... - 18 years agoHi everyone. I'm still learning my way around this app, and am having an issue that I can't figure out. I created a multi-layered lower third, fairly large (2000px X 200) that I wanted to animate and fly in 3D. It has about 5 layers to it. I saved it as a PSD then imported all the layers into motion. One of the PS layers is a stylized wheel that I animated using it's rotation properties. Iby Andy Neil - Motion Re: Pet Peeve with Transistions - 17 years agoScott, you're not alone. I got so used to how Avid allows that with transitions, that I do it on accident in FCP all the time and get that error. On top of that, if you have multiple transitions on multiple tracks (ie: audio tracks), you have to delete them all individually before you can proceed. At least give me the ability to lasso and delete all the transitions at once. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: FCP to Avid to FCP - 17 years agoI find it telling that editors with credits from the 60s (before there WAS an Avid), who obviously had to make the change from uprights, to flatbeds, to Avid, now all of a sudden refuse to go any further. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Import sequence from other project - 17 years agoIf both projects are from the same version of FCP... Open both projects at the same time, tear project tab off the browser for one of the projects so you can see both project windows at the same time. Drag holding OPT to copy the sequence from one project into another. Done. The sequence doesn't contain media, it simply points to media. It can do that from any project or multiple projects.by Andy Neil - Café LA Re: FCP to Avid to FCP - 17 years agoThe guy has an OLD Media Composer? Do you mean pre-adrenaline line? If that's so, then I don't know if he CAN edit HD on it. Unlike FCP, sometimes "upgrading" Avid means buying all new hardware. Either way, it sounds like a headache. Tell him to buy, "FCP for Avid Editors". Great book for getting him over the hump. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA |
