Re: XDCAM HD, Native 23.976, Multicam - 17 years agoYou mentioned that you had a problem with the TC of your audio machines. What specifically is wrong there? Was it a one time problem, or is it something you have to live with regarding the audio decks you used? If your TC can not be trusted with your audio decks, then I'd say that there needs to be some back up into consideration in production. You also said that there was inconsistant slatinby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Please help...which dvd recorder? - 17 years agoI have digital cable John, and I can capture video from my DVR (from the cable company). My DVR has a S-Video out to TV (RCA for audio). I connect with standard cables to my DVC Pro deck, but if I had a regular break out box, I would be able to do it that way. I set FCP to Non-controllable device, and I simply capture the throughput signal. You obviously take a quality hit since I'm convertinby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Color Correction 20 years ago? - 17 years agoCameras used for "broadcast" video were a helluva lot more expensive. Your basic consumer would never be able to afford it. Even then, most television shows edited for broadcast were shot on film not video. Film is a much more forgiving medium than video and can be pushed around further before the images really degrades (or at least is was). Still, programs shot on video were meticuby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: audio playback dur capture - 17 years agoI have tried long and hard to make that preview button permanent and it won't budge. I routinely lock my preferences as a way of preserving a number of settings that I don't want to change, but unfortunately, everytime I open the Log and Capture window, I have to check that box. Very annoying, but I just ended up putting it in my workflow. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Lighting Food?!? - 17 years agoIf you're shooting close ups, I might consider smaller lights to highlight the food and avoid washing it in light. A good combination of highlights and shadow will likely help it to look good (you'll want to see the grill marks on the fajitas). I would try to light it as to make it look like the light is coming from the natural table lighting. Small and intimate. Also, if you have some warm cby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Clips squeezed in timeline - 17 years agoYou probably have an anamorphic sequence with non-anamorphic video. Hit CMD+0 to check your sequence settings and make sure the anamorphic 16:9 button is NOT checked. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: 2 Hour vids - 17 years agoRoxio makes a great program called "Popcorn". It will essentially fit your already compressed movie to the size of a DVD. This is helpful if you're not exactly sure what bitrate you should use to ensure your 2-hr movie will fit. I just err on the side of quality of compression and then use Popcorn to get it down the rest of the way. It does a great job of maximizing quality as it coby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: timecode reader filter - 17 years agoIt may be a problem with the way you're trying to apply it. Try nesting your sequence into another sequence and then apply the filter to the nest. This is more effective than using a slug clip that you'd have to crop in order to see the track below. When I apply the TC Reader clip in that fashion it acts fine. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: timecode reader filter - 17 years agohow are you applying it? What exactly are you trying to do? Are you trying to send out a sequence with the TC of each clip, or are you trying to send out a sequence with an unbroken TC window? Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Double Click Cross Dissolve Get Duration - 17 years agoOops, didn't see Martin's post saying the same thing. Was too busy typing, and not reading. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Double Click Cross Dissolve Get Duration - 17 years agoActually Derek, it's even easier then that for you keyboard shortcut junkies. Select the transition and hit OPT+1,2,or 3 for Start, Centered, or Ending at cut. That's how I primarily do it and it's fast, fast, fast.by Andy Neil - Café LA Re: FCP or Avid? Which to use and when - 17 years agoDerek said: <<I think Avid was designed more for editors who are used to working with old film methods, while FCP has a more modern mindset.>> That can be exemplified by the Avid and FCP icon for bin. In FCP it's a standard folder icon like you'd expect to see in a standard OS window. In Avid, it's the shape of a film "bin" (ie: a hamper with a horizontal bar hanging aboby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: multiple audio tracks - 17 years agoOr hold down option to temporarily turn off linking in order to move the video and audio independently. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: FCP or Avid? Which to use and when - 17 years agoIt's a matter of opinion Joey. I could have the same argument for FCP users who are dragging around in their timeline instead of using the ruler area to move the playhead. "You aren't paying attention and you get what you deserve." If you learn the modality of the program, then you shouldn't have problems. Personally, I have never had issues with accidently dragging my timeline clipby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: FCP or Avid? Which to use and when - 17 years agoKoz says: <<There is no way to get Final Cut to completely forget what happened last week and open up a really fresh project--other than, of course, trashing preferences.>> Actually, locking the preferences gets you this, provided when you lock your preferences, you don't have a project open. FCP always saves changes to the preferences when quitting. When locked, those changes arenby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Changing the Prefs - 17 years agoIf your preferences are locked, then I'd say it's a good bet that FCP Rescue didn't work. Unlock them and then try the rescue again. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: wacom tablet - 17 years ago"...No editor I know uses one." --Well, now you know several, Derek. :-) I switched to the Wacom after talking with my GFX peeps, and after talking with another editor who had tendonitis from using the mouse. She said that her wrists felt much better using the pen and tablet. I wasn't suffering from carpal tunnel or anything, but I'm always looking for a way to make things easieby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: OT - Filming in Public - 17 years agoActually that's a great example of how the law applies. You'd have to get a release from the guy you zoomed in on, but not from everyone who ran the marathon. Hopefully, he/she'd be your actor and you'd have a reason for singling him/her out. Also, in the marathon example, there is the added protection that the media enjoys under the 1st amendment. You have the right to tape/film people in pby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: OT - Filming in Public - 17 years ago<<The plaintiff doesn't have to prove that s/he has been hurt by the portrayal. His/her right to control his/her own image is enough.>> From the California Statute: Any person who knowingly uses another's name, voice, signature, photograph, or likeness, in any manner on or in products, merchandise, or goods, or for purposes of advertising or selling, or soliciting purchases of proby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: OT - Filming in Public - 17 years agoI may have mispoke by saying punitive damages, but I still stand by my advice. It's highly unlikely that a person would be able to prove that a 2-3 second shot caused them damage unless they were doing something that could have placed them in a compromising position as some of the above examples pointed to. However, derek is right that the injunction would likely be the first thing filed in theby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: OT - Filming in Public - 17 years agoThe law we're all talking about here and the reason for the release forms is called the Right to Publicity. Currently there is no federal protection for the Right of Publicity, so the law varies from state to state. Some states only protect the publicity rights of those who are already famous. Others protect any individual. I'm not sure which state you're filming(taping) in, but I'm in San Diby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: chroma key - 17 years agoDid you shoot the green screen footage in DV? DV is not a good codec for shooting chroma key footage. Also, have you played with the threshold and softness controls to adjust the key? Also, what version of FCP are you using? Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Best DVD format - 17 years agoNo it's NOT compressed twice. Exporting from FCP as a Quicktime Movie uses the current codec settings that you've been editing with in FCP. This is one of the biggest misconceptions in video editing. Quicktime is a wrapper. It's just the shell that the video is contained in. Codec (eg: DV/NTSC, Animation, Uncompressed) is the "compressor/decompressor". If you digitized from a DV tby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: resetting scratch disk - 17 years agoI don't know that software so I'm not sure what you'd do or not do. However, if it's used to restore preferences, there are ways to save them that don't require software. Trashing your preferences is a catch-all fix for a lot of wonky FCP behavior. Once they've been trashed, FCP remakes them from scratch as soon as you open FCP again. That means that you'll have to set up all the settings andby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: how t replicate this - 17 years agoHere's my .02 Aaron. First, ditch the moving camera idea (as I think you've already decided). Obviously the motion tracking involved would push your budget pretty high, pretty fast. Walk the model in front of a green screen on a treadmill. Shoot her in profile and play a beat oriented music track that she can walk to. The neat thing about beat tracks is it will actually contrain her stride tby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Speaker On - 17 years agoFirst off, the preview button DOES work, I use it all the time, so rest easy. If it's greyed out for you, then the problem is that FCP is not recognizing the means by which you are bringing in the audio. The question is: How is the audio getting into the FCP?? By what means? I don't know what flavor of ADS Pyro you're using (I saw no less than 3 on their website). If the audio is coming in vby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: resetting scratch disk - 17 years agoWhat to do next? In what series of events? What are you trying to accomplish? I'd say if you have your clips and your project file, you might want to try editing. As far as your scratch disk, you need to tell FCP where to set it after trashing your preferences. The default is the system drive (for some odd reason) so you'll have to set it to your G-Raid in your system preferences. Click onby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: light bulb flashing - 17 years agoAside from the plugin route or the dip to color which even at real speed never looked right for me, I used a luma key filter and a clip of white. The luma key would transfer the white from the white clip to the brightest parts of the clip. by keyframing the threshold (over about 4-7 frames depending on if I was doing more than one "camera flash" I could control how much of the frame waby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: squeezing a series of several images a one time - 17 years agoI'm not sure I understand you. You say "squeezing", implying that you want to distort the image, but then you say "21 seconds to the left" which sounds like you just want to move the clips in the timeline. Assuming you just want to move the clips: Select all the clips by lassoing them. Then type "-2100" and hit enter. Provided you have the room to the left, it'lby Andy Neil - Café LA |
