New Monitor to go with New Mac? - 13 years agoSo I'm preparing a new Mac purchase and I've finally decided to let go of my 1st gen 20" Cinema Display. It's time to get a new, slightly larger monitor. However, in researching this, I'm a little confused about some of the technical specs and how they may affect my uses as an editor and motion graphic artist. Aside from the usual factors of price and size (I have limited space on myby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: upgrading to new drives and moving media - 13 years agoA file copy program like SuperDuper might be the way to go. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: From XDCAM EX to DVD SD is this Compressor Time too slow ... - 13 years agoIt certainly sounds wrong. The only thing I can say is that you're going from one Long GOP format (XDCam EX) to another (MPEG-2) which greatly increases time and tends to lower quality. You might try exporting to an intraframe codec (like ProRes) and then converting to MPEG-2. Andyby Andy Neil - Compressor - Media Compression and Conversion Re: OT (but perhaps not) - templates for web based demo reels? - 13 years agoI would suggest hiring a web designer. Let him wrangle the HTML if you don't want to deal with it. I think it's important to have a site with your resume as opposed to a link to a you tube video. I built mine myself and I'm not a web designer but I think it looks pretty good. A site says that you're serious about your work and are not just doing this on the side along with other interests.by Andy Neil - Compressor - Media Compression and Conversion Re: Storage system for 6 user set-up - 13 years agoQuoteRussFor the few tutorials or training projects we might do, I can make multiple copies of the media for each workstation to access. I'm confused. I thought the point was to buy a hard drive array. Why create 6 separate arrays, when you can set up a SAN that all the systems pull from. Then you wouldn't have to copy tutorials or training projects multiple times. The students can accessby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Storage system for 6 user set-up - 13 years agoTry to be a little more specific about your needs. Will the students be sharing the same media, same projects? How much media are we talking about keeping on the drives at any one time? Are you accounting for archival space or do you have a separate plan for that? Do you have a lot of assets to keep track of? I don't have any experience working with either system you listed, but I did seeby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: export time variables with stacking in FCP timeline - 13 years agoI forgot that FCP 5 doesn't come with ProRes. You can use any intraframe codec but with your setup that means either uncompressed or the Apple Intermediate Codec. Uncompressed is certainly high quality, but the file size is quite large. AIC is what ProRes more or less replaces, so it should work, though I've no experience with it in terms of file size, or quality expectations. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: marking while capturing - 13 years agoAhh, another Avid perk that would be nice in FCP. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: export time variables with stacking in FCP timeline - 13 years agoWhat are you trying to get to? Your first post suggested that you were intending to make a DVD. If that's the case then none of the combinations in your 2nd post are best. HDV is long GOP. MPEG2 is long GOP. It's not a good idea to go from one long GOP format directly to another. The best option is to render out your HDV sequence as prores. This can be done by nesting the HDV sequenceby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: 16:9 image imported into 4:3 sequence..help getting full 16:9 back to DVD - 13 years agoYeah, that's correct. But remember, it won't ask to conform if you copy and paste the sequence. What you need to do is grab the 4:3 sequence icon in the browser and drag it into the new 16:9 sequence. Then it should ask. If however, it doesn't for some odd reason, you can still fix it really easily. Just select the nested sequence and hit CMD+OPT+V for remove attributes. Check any boxes tby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: 16:9 image imported into 4:3 sequence..help getting full 16:9 back to DVD - 13 years agoQuotejonb3333I've tried it a few times but I'm not getting a warning. If you're not getting a warning, then you probably have your preferences set to automatically conform sequences. Go into your user settings (OPT+Q). Under the Editing tab, at the bottom right, change the Auto Conform sequence setting to: ASK. Hit OK. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: 16:9 image imported into 4:3 sequence..help getting full 16:9 back to DVD - 13 years agoMaking a 16:9 sequence from a 4:3 sequence isn't hard. You just have to blow up the 4:3 image. Try this: Create a new anamorphic sequence in the same codec as your 4:3 sequence. Drag your 4:3 sequence into the 16:9 sequence. When it asks if you want to conform your sequence to match your clip, select NO. OPT+double-click your nested sequence to open it up in the viewer. Go to the Mby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: 16:9 image imported into 4:3 sequence..help getting full 16:9 back to DVD - 13 years agoYou can't just take a 4:3 image and stretch it to 16:9 in the DVD authoring and expect it to maintain the proper aspect. This is why it looks wrong. If you want a 16:9 DVD, then you have to scale the video in a 16:9 sequence in FCP first, then encode a 16:9 MPEG. Then create a 16:9 DVD. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: 16:9 image imported into 4:3 sequence..help getting full 16:9 back to DVD - 13 years agoYour problem isn't with FCP, it's with your DVD authoring. You're working with a 4:3 sequence in FCP, but somehow in your DVD authoring, you're authoring a 16:9 DVD, or else your TV is set to stretch 4:3 video to fill a 16:9 screen. If the latter is the case, then you need to reconfigure your set to display 4:3 footage either pillarboxed or else in zoom mode where it blows up the image until thby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: getting black image, can hear sound - 13 years agoQuoteKevinYou in Wireframe Mode? You know, I actually wondered about that myself. I guess it would be appropriate to apply Occam's razor to this problem. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: getting black image, can hear sound - 13 years agoDo the clips referenced by your project open up in Quicktime? Have you tried trashing your preferences? Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: HD to Standard DVCam - 13 years agoYou don't DRAG a destination preset. You go up to the Target menu (where the application menus are) and choose Destination/Other... from the menu options. It's not a drag and drop procedure. The drag preset that you quoted me on is regarding using a default preset. If you have a default set, then you can select all the clips and drag a COMPRESSION preset (not a destination preset) on top ofby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: HD to Standard DVCam - 13 years agoQuotederekYou still can't drop one Destination preset onto multiple jobs/files at once. I had to compress about 500 HD clips and conform all of them to ProRes HQ a few months ago, and you had to click every single "ribbon" to make the Destination stick. Actually Derek, you can. There are two ways to do it. Create a destination in the Destination window (CMD+4) and then make it the dby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: HD to Standard DVCam - 13 years agoIn the compressor Jobs window, all clips need to have a form of compression applied, and a destination. Look at the clips you added to compressor (the large, rounded rectangle). Each one should have at least one thin, rounded rectangle inside the large rectangle. That's the compression preset. In the thin rectangle, at the left, you'll see the preset name (ie: DV NTSC). Then there'll be a diby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Animated Pix jittery in FCP - 13 years agoFCP used to have a 4000 pixel limit (or something like that). I don't think that's the case any longer. However, it's generally not a good idea for the pics to be more than 2x your frame size. 1.5x is what is usually recommended. In hard-nosed terms this means if your frame size is 1920x1080: Recommended: 2880x2880 or smaller Not larger than: 3840x3840 Again, this is just a rule ofby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Animated Pix jittery in FCP - 13 years agoiPhoto will let you export different types, and you can size photos down. You can't change color modes though. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: OT: Sync/drift audio issues while programs are Broadcast - 13 years agoWhen I worked for the local FOX affiliate in San Diego, we would experience audio sync issues in some of our programming. The issue ended up being the encoders that compressed the signal down the line. The video would get behind, but the audio would fly on through. But also, services like Direct TV got our programming from our Time/Warner signal, and sometimes there would be problems in theby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: EDIT to tape not sending audio - 13 years agoWithout sitting at the computer, I can't say for sure, but here are things to check. Edit to tape contains buttons on the bottom right which control which audio tracks are sent. Make sure that your audio playback is sending through your capture card. Make sure that your audio tracks are sending to the right channels. IOW, A1 is sending to ch 1, A2 is sending to ch 2. Hmmm. That's alby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Converting QTSC to 16/9 3GP - 13 years agoI don't really work with 3G compression, but having a quick look in Compressor I found that if you click on the options button for the 3G encoder type, you can choose on of the two EZMovie file formats which allow for custom frame sizes. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Animated Pix jittery in FCP - 13 years agoWhat size and format are your stills? Also, are they RGB or CMYK? You will get poor results if you're in CMYK up to and including glitchy green frames. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Trimming on video layers - 13 years agoActually Derek, the track that is entered into Trim Mode when pressing CMD+7 is determined by the auto-select buttons, not the source track button. I just wanted to point that out to anyone else who comes across this thread. Auto-select buttons can be toggled on/off with CMD+(track number on the number pad, not the numbers above the letters). Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: FCP System Set Up HELP - 13 years agoThe ATI 4870 is a very new card and will certainly be able to handle your monitors. It's also highly optimized for Motion. As far as drives, it's hard to say without knowing what your company is going to be using the system for. Not everyone needs 6TB of fibre RAID storage, but if you'll be working in HD, you should at least have some kind of RAID storage. RAID 0, as I understand it, doesn'by Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Maya to Final Cut Pro work flow - 13 years agoIf you have After Effects, and you're talking about doing an FX composite shot, then you should just stay in After Effects. It has a much better keyer, and it's made to do composites. When then entire scene is put together, then export is as a QT movie and edit it into your FCP timeline. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: FCP vs AE on 30s workflows - 13 years agoI edit in FCP and I composite and do special FX in either AE or Motion. It's an apples and oranges question for me. FCP is an editing program, AE is a compositing program. There are times when I have to make the decision when to use Motion and when to use AE though. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Video stutter in viewer - 13 years agoDo you have Unlimited RT on? If so is there an Orange line above your footage in the timeline? Unlimited RT will attempt to play your footage even if your computer or sequence is unsuited to doing so. To manage it, FCP will degrade the quality and drop frames. As a general rule of thumb, I don't edit in Unlimited RT unless I need to look at something specific that would otherwise take severby Andy Neil - Café LA |
