Re: Ideal specs for making a pencil animation for projection? - 15 years agoScans at higher dpi translate into larger sized images in video. The relative dpi for video is no higher than 72 dpi. At some point, scanning photos in at too high a dpi will result in a moire effect as the video codec aliases the image. If you scanned a 8x11 piece of paper in at 300 dpi, and then put that into 1080 frame, FCP would see it as an incredibly large photo (perhaps in the 4000xby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Ideal specs for making a pencil animation for projection? - 15 years agoQuotePDCwon't a pencil drawing that was originally scanned in at 176 dpi not look as good in the final video result as one that gets scanned at 300dpi? Video is not the same as print. dpi is irrelevant in video since the number of pixels for any given format are fixed. In print, you could have a 10'x10' poster made from a 100 dots per inch (dpi) or 300 or whatever. Therefore the higher the dby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Compressing HD to h.264 issues - 15 years agoI agree with Doug. You need to match your sequence to your footage. Check the format of you footage by selecting a clip in the browser and hitting CMD+9. You either shot 720P, or 720PN with the HVX-200. Hit CMD+OPT+N to create a new sequence that lets you choose the format. In the drop down menu, find the presets for DVCProHD. If you shot 720P, then choose DVCProHD 720p60. If you shot 72by Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Compressing HD to h.264 issues - 15 years agoCan you post a screen shot of the "squishing" you're referring to? By editing in a DV sequence, FCP should have automatically scaled your video to fit the frame. So when you were editing, it should have looked like a 4:3 letterboxed video. When you export as a SCQT it should look exactly as it did in FCP. But, and I have to stress this, you are severely trashing the quality of youby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Compressing HD to h.264 issues - 15 years agoSo you edited 720p footage in an NTSC dv sequence? You were rendering with every edit? andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: FCP & original timecode - 15 years agoThat's exactly what I mean. The TC generator generates TC based on the TC you tell it to start on. The default is 00:00:00;00. If your sequence has starting TC of 01:00:00;00, the TC generator still defaults to 00:00:00;00 and you have to apply an offset in the controls to get it to match. Same with the TC generator in Compressor. I say it's arbitrary because it's dependent upon what you telby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Is venting allowed? I'll try - 15 years agoQuoteXavierKeyframe editing is a nightmare. I am still trying to figure out how to add a keyframe... ?K isn't doing much... I understand your pain, but to get the most out of Motion requires you breaking from the keyframe paradigm that we've all gotten so used to in programs like FCP, AE, and others. Once you do, you'll be much happier with your Motion experience. Just my .02 Andyby Andy Neil - Motion Re: Compressing HD to h.264 issues - 15 years agoExport via Compressor was seriously flawed in older versions of FCP. Avoid until FCP 6. If you shot SD anamorphic and are editing in an anamorphic sequence in FCP, then I'd just export a Self-contained or reference QT, not Quicktime Conversion. Take the SCQT or REFQT into compressor and choose your H.264 setting. Go into the Geometry section and under Padding, select the 16:9 preset. Tby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: FCP & original timecode - 15 years agoThe TC reader filter in FCP will take the original TC from your video and burn it in the frame. When they give you DVD screeners they are either applying the TC generator filter which creates new, arbitrary TC in FCP, or else they are using the TC generator in Compressor (which does the same thing). You need to tell them to use the TC reader filter in FCP and then export the video for DVD.by Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Can "Stuffit" be used for AIFF files? - 15 years agoI haven't had it freeze on me, but it still does that progress bar thing where it's "closing file" forever. andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Can "Stuffit" be used for AIFF files? - 15 years agoThe hold up is iDisk. It's convenient, and simple when you don't have an FTP site or something similar, but iDisk always takes a long time to upload. 2GB isn't all that big these days. For the future, I'd look into companies that do this for a living. YouSendIt, ShareFile, and others are available for a price, and depending on what you pay, can have very quick uploads. If they have a composite out, then it'll be standard def through that (the camera does a downconvert). With a component out there is usually a setting that can give you either 1080i or 480i. Then you should check the specs on the DVD recorder and make sure it can recordby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: HDV to DVD - 15 years agoSome DVD recorders can record to DVD from the FW input, but FW is not a pass-through cable. You have to be in VTR mode for the FW to work and that means you can't shoot at the same time. However, some/most cameras have composite or component pass-through cables for monitoring. You should be able to connect your DVD recorder to these and burn a DVD while shooting the service. When you release, FCP makes a new master clip that you can rename without it affecting the original master. One caveat. The clip in the sequence that you used to make the new browser clip will still be referencing the original masterby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: General error 34 - 15 years agoyour project might be corrupt. Can you backtrack to an autosave? Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Why Can't Select DFTC now? - 15 years agoCheck your easy set-up. When blacking a tape, I think FCP relies on the capture settings, not the sequence settings. Did you initially use "Current Settings" when you clicked the black and code button? Instead, try manually selecting your setting using a Kona drop frame preset. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Workflow question for Keying in FCP feature length movie. - 15 years agoWhat about Motion? It's part of FCS 2 so there's no additional cost there, and masking before keying is much easier in Motion. As far as the color correction goes, I can't test my theory because I have no footage to test it, but if the color correct effect is below the key effect, then shouldn't that color just the left over image (ie: keyed image). Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Saving FCP EFFECTS Tab Organization- Favorites & 3rd Parties - 15 years agoFavorite Effects are automatically saved in the preferences. However, if the preferences are locked, or are trashed, those saved favorites will go away. Another option is to create an "Effects" project. That is, an FCP project with no media in it, just saved versions of your favorite effects. Instead of putting them in the Favorites tab, you drag them into the browser and save.
