Do you just playback in FCP, or QT in one window, and type in Textedit in another window? e.g. And go back-and-forth between windows? I know at TV stations, many use a product that estimates words-to-seconds, based on how you do settings for the speaker's speech pattern. The page has both a word processing window... as well as a player window, in which you can sloooooooooow down the audio to typing speed! That feature REALLY helps! I archive the VIDEO_TS folders on HDD, then use Toast (9) to burn discs, because you can store so many 4GB VIDEO_TS folders on a 500GB portable USB drive! Starting a few weeks ago, when I drag the VIDEO_TS folder to Toast, Toast brings up an alert box saying that the file is CSS encrypted and it cannot copy it!! For other purposes, I record SD, and remove the memory stick and mount it on my Mac, and drag and drop the .MPG files. QT plays them fine. The Finder says they are 720x404. FCP (6.0.6 - OSX 10.5.7) takes 2 hours to render 1 1/2 hours to 720x480. I find it best to playback on a device made by the same manufacturer as of the camera the tapes were recorded on (Panasonic + Panasonic, SONY + SONY)... but the potential exists that all will work fine. Just get a camera or device that has FW and is controllable. However, I think the whole HD format and processing time (~~ 24 hrs for 1 hour of raw) is more than what I need, so I'm going back to shooting SD on the same camera. The trip is happening, and the advice is working out! All of my Apple gear has transformers that sense 120/240 50/60. FCP is doing fine with NTSC video, 29.97 fps.
