FCPX on a mac mini? - 9 years agoRunning into too many walls with my trusty G4-Tiger 10.4 - FCP6 and thinking about upgrading. The new MacPro is out of my budget right now so I am wondering if anyone is using a mac mini with FCPX? If so, is there any particular processor or RAM that is necessary or which combos to avoid? Thanks of course I will be using the companion apps as well, so are the graphics cards in these unitsby rickman - Café LA - X Re: Freeze frame and pan - 10 years agoFound it! and its way more complicated. The shot i mentioned on the "Person of Interest" seems to actually be slow motion video. Closer examination reveals its not a still frame at all. I found the actual effect i was seeking on the Film Riot site. They used a computerized motion control rig from Kessler. And some spiffy software... Very cool but unfortunately out of my budget fby rickman - Motion Freeze frame and pan - 10 years agoI know everyone has seen this effect because I see it everywhere. The first really profound cut I saw using this was a video/commercial a few years back. I think it was a Phillips spot made for the web. It involved clowns robbing a bank. If you have not seen it by all means google it. More recently its used in "Person of Interest" on CBS. The opening sequences use it and it pops uby rickman - Motion Re: Bloody question - 10 years agoActually, I was thinking in terms of a vector graphic of some sort, but I like your idea better! Thanks VPby rickman - Motion Bloody question - 10 years agoGreetings all and Happy Canada Day! Trying to make an effect and i don't know where to post it - so I started here. (This is for the DVD menu page) Imagine a still photo CU headshot - grayscale - a flash of light and then a small thin line appears on the neck followed by a sloooow moving trickle of red. Obviously the headshot and flash of light is easy, but how do I build the blood? Is thby rickman - Motion Basic Workflow - 2 questions - 11 years agoAfternoon all, So I have cut a 110 min feature (without credits) with about 20 bite sized sequence timelines. What is the best way to combine them for the final cut? Do i just make a nest of each one and put them all on one line? This is to be the final proof for the director to gaze at. Can someone suggest the best "export" type for burning to a dvd? Quiz 2: Another project,by rickman - Café LA Flash effect - 11 years agoThis should be simple.... Cutting a dream sequence with a dozen or so short segments. I want ye olde FLASH effect between each clip. Do I just drop in a white slug or do I need to tweek it ... say start with white then key it down to dissolve into the next image clip? Or is there a flashbulb effect I just need to drop in? Thanks Rickby rickman - Café LA Re: 24 frame Inquiry - 11 years agoThanks for replying all, At the risk of sounding ignorant - maybe too late - Am I missing something in regards to the export and playback? Right, I understand the difference of 24 and 30p when shooting. I like the comment of "fewer" frames to encode at 24. However, I was under the impression that all the digital whiz bang flat screens are still displaying or viewing at 30p.by rickman - Café LA 24 frame Inquiry - 11 years agoHi folks, Let me know if this needs to be posted elswhere. Getting ready to do a short that has no chance of ever seeing a big screen. Just big tvs and internet Lots of talk here about moving from 24 to 30 frames. I think the camera - Pana Lumix -will do either. So, should we shoot it at 24 or 30 frames? Am I missing something magical about 24 frames? That's the only Intel machine I have at the moment. I have one running Leopard, is Lion a must also? I can get an Intel Mac tower refurbished locally with Snow Leopard for $1300. Would that work? Sorry I don't have all the particulars. When I find out more, I will post them. Thanks again, Rickby rickman - Café LA Audio with dslr cameras - 12 years agoEvening all and happy long weekend coming up! (well, for those of you with jobs anyway) A few of my friends recently entered one of those 48hr film contests. As the name implies, they were given a topic and had 48 hours to write, shoot, edit and burn a dvd of 7-10 minutes in length. They chose to use a dslr camera, and to record the audio separately instead of using the camera mic (or maybby rickman - Café LA Re: Need QT advice please - 12 years agoSo instead of emailing the video, just send them a link. That would take a lot less time. I guess I can find information on You tube for formatting specs, right? Thanks for your input, sounds like a better way to do this. Rickby rickman - Café LA Need QT advice please - 12 years agoGreetings all, I want to make a brief 2+ minute QT movie I can transmit by email. Something like many of you would refer to as a demo reel I suspect. It does not need to be HD quality, just email friendly. Can someone suggest settings I should use? Also, not everyone has QT on their computers, I don't know why but nevertheless... Does the movie need to be "created" to open happilyby rickman - Café LA Re: How To Sites - 12 years agoThanks Joe and Nick. Yeah I recall reading about bullet time when the Matrix came out. the Carousel commercial has a nice "how they did it" video you can find by googling- philips carousel explained. Mucho, mucho bucks for all the equipment and talent!! That was filmed with a computer controlled dolly rig and the actors were hanging from wires!! (Philips commercial I think, Adam Berg director?) A technique I see more and more in various modifications. Appears to be a still frame shot of an action scene. The camera then moves through and around the scene. Can anyone suggest a site/book where I can find out how you do this? I wanna try it!! Got a CU face shot of an eeevil person. I want to have her eyes turn red of black or whatever when she gets angry. What's a "proper" way to do this? In my particular scenario, the character is not moving or looking around, which I would think would complicatby rickman - Motion Formats for Commercial use? - 13 years agoHi Folks, I read a recent post regarding formats for broadcast tv. I presume that "broadcsat" refers to actual over the air transmission and it appears that our spiffy little videos we put on a dvds rate a bit north of garbage for that purpose!!?? Here's my premise. Say you want to assemble a program that can be sold to small local "broadcasters" as well as the cable guyby rickman - Café LA Rotoscoping tools - 13 years agoHi gang, I just saw a clip for the new After Effects Rotoscoping tool and it looks pretty handy indeed. However, I don't HAVE AE. Is there a tool in FCP or Motion or any other economical app, that will let me outline a person on a Still frame (or multiple frames), make the background transparent, lay it over some other footage and then keyframe the opacity to make it disappear? I was told I need to format it for the Mac. (G4 1.25GHZ mirror door/ Tiger 10.4) Anyone know how I should format it? Will disk utility do it? #2 - I am now cursed. Not real sure how or why buuuuutt.... anyway So I need to cut the clips into their separate respective scenes and rename them. So far when I cut it and try to make a "NEW" clip and rename it, the original composited clip name is changing. The result is I still have all these unrelated clips wiby rickman - Café LA Re: Production script breakdown - 13 years agothanks for the explanation John. So ... its basically a method for "estimating" the amount of script that gets shot on a daily basis. OR/and letting you know if your behind schedule or ahead of schedule while you are shooting. Is that about right? Thanks Rickby rickman - Café LA Production script breakdown - 13 years agoHi all, I realize this is a FCP site, but many of you guys are wearing several movie making hats and can explain something for me. Been reading about breaking the script down into bite sized pieces for production. I get the idea of numbering the scenes, and lining the script for sequences and working out the break down sheets, production boards. I was hoping someone could tell me where I can find a filter or how to modify an audio clip to make it sound like it is coming in through a phone. You know where the actor is just holding the phone and we are hearing what 'sounds' like she is hearing on the phone. thanks folks Rickby rickman - Café LA Lightning Effect - 14 years agoOkay, I know this forum is for folks who have problems, but I don't know where else to look. Rickby rickman - Café LA map with travel path - 14 years agoHi, Not sure where to post this as I don't know what to call this. You have seen clips where there is a map and then there is a line running across it like the path of somebody's trip. Like a plane's flight pattern right?
