Using it in RAID 5 mode it dropped frames like crazy in both record and playback. As you can see from your own screenshots the performance on average is very good, but it has frequent spikes that are far lower than the average. I believe that it is the RAID chipset they are using. I was able to get OWC to take the unit back inby VPiccin - Café LA Re: Have you used either of these RAID 5 enclosures? - 12 years agoI believe that Caldigit has two different interface systems that use the same connectors and cables. In one case their RAID card uses mini-sas in a similar, if not the same way as the OWC solution. They also have products, like the HD Pro line, that have internal RAID intelligence that use similar looking connections to a buss expander in the MacPro. I know that their RAID card is well regby VPiccin - Café LA Re: Have you used either of these RAID 5 enclosures? - 12 years agoI was under the impression that the CalDigit card was a proprietary buss interface using mini-sas only as a connector. Please post back if that combo works.by VPiccin - Café LA Re: Have you used either of these RAID 5 enclosures? - 12 years agoI purchased the OWC Qx2 for a client as an inexpensive RAID 5. I found in that application it did not work for them. The RAID controller in that unit is spiky with frequent slow downs in performance. As a result we had a lot of dropped frames. Annoying on playback, but a disaster on record. To their credit the OWC folks were incredibly helpful. They took the unit back and applied the cost to tby VPiccin - Café LA Re: Running Parallels anyone? - 12 years agoI don't have Parallels on my edit system, but I do on my business machine, a Macbook Pro. It does a fine job for what I need, primarily running Quicken. I only run it when I need to access Windows programs, maybe once or twice a week. When you run it you might also want to invest in virus software on the Windows virtual machine, as you open yourself to all the fobs and foibles of working in thby VPiccin - Café LA Re: Producers that don't pay!!!!! - 12 years agoI have always tried to take a longer view of this. If they are screwing me, it is probable that they are screwing other folks as well. I simply won't work for the offender again. I assume that the other pros that are treated this way also will not work with them. Now I don't know about you all but for me the best work I do is for people with whom I work on a repeated basis. We come to know eaby VPiccin - Café LA Re: Control of FCP by another edit system - 12 years agoWell probably not Bob. Final Cut 7 was declared by apple end of life on June 21. The "replacement" is an entirely new program. If you need it you will probably have to put your code wizards to work.by VPiccin - Café LA Re: Control of FCP by another edit system - 12 years agoOK to Loren's point about keyboard control. If you look at something like the Countour Shuttle Pro it seems that you can stuff commands into the keyboard buffer to control Mac applications. So if you got a Keyspan serial adaptor, and wrote a program to read the serial control protocol, then translated and pushed the appropriate keys you could probably do it. How much do your users want thisby VPiccin - Café LA Re: Control of FCP by another edit system - 12 years agoI'm pretty sure what Bob is trying is to get the timeline of FCP to react under serial control as a virtual VTR. Folks using the offspring of linear style edit controllers can sync up a bunch of edit systems and servers and do interesting things with them. I have never seen it done Bob. The only way Final Cut talks RS422 is via third party capture boards. Might want to ask over at AJA. If anyoby VPiccin - Café LA Re: Template - 12 years agoFrom what I have been able to see and read, deleting the main story line clip is designed to also delete all attached layers. As a workaround the damn designers could you put a dummy layer on the main storyline and make your replaceable element an attached clip, like your graphic layers?by VPiccin - Café LA - X Re: App Store not seeing Final Cut Pro X store purchase - 12 years agoIn my case my Apple ID was linked to my PayPal account. They shot it down as well, and I had to link to a credit card to complete the transaction. Try using a "proxy machine". While reducing your working computer to silicon dust is indeed satisfying, it has definite productivity consequences. I keep all my old machines around for just such circumstances. While not quite as satisfying as inflicting fatal violence on the offending machine, hammering TWO older units produces almostby VPiccin - Café LA Re: OT: Customizing EditBay - 12 years agoThere are several companies that make purpose built furniture for edit bays. Some are pretty cool, with electrically adjustable desk heights, built in monitor arms, bays for rack mount gear and cable management. You can even have stuff custom built if you like. Needless to say they can get pricy. Here are a couple of companies to look at:by VPiccin - Café LA Re: Locking footage in timeline - 12 years agoIf you are confused by all the extra layers, render out a current setting quicktime of just the elements that you need to keep. Leave handles for transitions if you need to. Bring that movie back into your project, put it on a timeline and lock the tracks. Now name that something like "submaster". "shell" or "donut". For each customization you simply duplicate theby VPiccin - Café LA Re: Issues with XDCam 720p footage in Final Cut. - 13 years agoJude, when we accidentally discovered the problem we all had the same "ah HAH" thought that you did and checked the energy saver and screen saver sections. No joy there. But I have to say it caused the three of us to freak out a bit. Shane, as for transcoding to Prores, while this is probably the best thing to do, the projects that they have cued up for this format are multicam shootby VPiccin - Café LA Re: Issues with XDCam 720p footage in Final Cut. - 13 years agoShane- Thanks for the reply. Three of us have spent the better part of the last three days trying to isolate this problem, and as of the moment it seems unique to this combination of hardware and software: A dual core G5 Mac running OSX 10.5.6, FCP 6.0.6 with Quicktime 7.0.9. The machines (3 of them) have Kona II cards and are connected to Editshare storage. The usual issue is that you are trying to capture at a data rate some component of your system can't handle. The gurus around here will probably also want to know some system details. In addition to the type of machine, a G4 you mentioned, but a laptop or a dual processor tower? You noted Final Cut 4, but better would beby VPiccin - Café LA Issues with XDCam 720p footage in Final Cut. - 13 years agoHas anyone had any issues using XDCam 720p footage in Final Cut? One of my clients has recently started using this format, and we are experiencing some odd drop frame issues. They have about 10 Final Cut work stations. The rooms range from dual proc G5's at the low end to 12 core Intel monsters at the high end. All have various Kona cards, a mix of Kona 2's, LHe and LHi's. You could also use a Frame Sync or TBC between the VHS and the capture card and get the same, or perhaps a bit better results. If you have a lot of material it could save you the time of making the dubs first. -Vby VPiccin - Café LA Re: Sponsors bar question - 13 years agoI like the form factor tho. I do a lot of work on OB trucks, and space is always a problem. Put some fans in it and you might actually help cool the computer. Of course fans mean an external power supply, and that must be what they are trying to avoid.by VPiccin - Café LA Re: How do you use your monitors? - 13 years agoOne setup I like is Timeline Viewer Canvas in one monitor, and the other rotated 90 degrees with the Browser, Audio Tool and Scopes.by VPiccin - Café LA Re: FCP Going Crazy!!! Of course it could be that the caffeine hasn't kicked in either this morning. A friend called last night and asked about converting 1080i mp4 files from 29.97 to 23.98p to match an existing timeline. As Avid considers that system a finishing machine they never taught it how to export a proper AAF. So he makes EDL's, which the Pablo makes into AAF's so that we can capture and finish for him. We have had some issues, and all the editors with EDL experience gather around to figureby VPiccin - Café LA Re: RAIDS - 13 years agoMan if I EVER am at a party with other editors and the conversation flags I am just going to ask, "So what do you use for storage." Ben, about 14 messages ago you asked about controller cards. The array in question is swapped between two systems, a 17" laptop and a MacPro tower. The interfaces are the ones recommended by OWC. The tower card is rated at 6 Gb/s and the express carby VPiccin - Café LA |
