Re: How did the LAFCPUG "Final Cut Pro X Update Night" meeting go? - 11 years agoThe problem was that the Next Meeting page said "Significant new feature releases". I don't see how that could not be interpreted to mean that new features would be announced and released in the very near future (like that night or the next day). It should have just read "Overview and demonstration of recently released new features". Then it would be clear that it was justby MikeH - Café LA - X Any songs to remix out there? - 18 years agoI'm learning how to use Soundtrack Pro and would like to practice by remixing existing songs. I found a song by Nine Inch Nails they released in Garageband format. I couldn't find a way to open that file in STP, but fortunately I was able to pull out all the samples and loops. It's actually pretty interesting and it helps to see how the song was actually mixed and learn what can be done from thaby MikeH - Soundtrack Pro Re: Missing "Advanced (Cinema)" config in DVDSP4 - 18 years agoI was mainly concerned that I was missing part of the program or that it wasn't installed correctly. Thanks for the help.by MikeH - DVD Studio Pro Missing "Advanced (Cinema)" config in DVDSP4 - 18 years agohave a dual G5 2.7 with 30" Cinema display. I installed FC Studio (no prior Pro apps installed) and have been learning all the apps. I'm on DVDSP4 now, going through the APTS DVDSP3 book. In the book it mentions (and shows a picture of) a window configuration labeled as "4 - Advanced (Cinema)" in the manage configurations window. The author says it's for viewing on a 23" Cinemby MikeH - DVD Studio Pro Re: Will Walter Murch be signing? - 18 years agoWho said he was my hero or that I worship him? It's just an autograph and I thought it would be cool to have the books signed by him.by MikeH - Café LA Will Walter Murch be signing? - 18 years agoI have a couple of Walter Murch's books. Any chance for the possibility of getting one or both signed at the next meeting?by MikeH - Café LA Re: 30" Cinema display - 18 years agoPart of the reason the quality may not seem as good as it should be is because of the resolution and the fact that it is a large panel. The graphics card has to scale the HD image (720p or 1080i) to the resolution being used by the canvas or viewer or the whole monitor if you preview fullscreen. That means you are not seeing the image in its true resolution. This a lot of times results in a softby MikeH - Café LA Re: Best HDs for G5 2.7GH - 18 years agoNo issues at all yet. I'm using the 250GB that came with the computer as my system drive. That's where everything is installed and where project files are saved. The 400GB Hitachi is a media drive only. That's where everything is captured to and the storage for all rendered files, thumbnails, etc. Never capture to (or render to) the system drive or the drive that FCP runs from or the drive thatby MikeH - Café LA Re: Best HDs for G5 2.7GH - 18 years agoI got a dual 2.7 last month. I added on a Hitachi 400GB drive I bought from ZipZoomFly.com. At the time they had the best price and I had seen others mention them as a source for hard drives. The HD arrived that same week in perfect condition and works flawlessly.by MikeH - Café LA Pricing on Adobe Creative Suite 2 Premium - 18 years agoIs there any type of special pricing besides the upgrade price on CS2 Premium? Some kind of education discount? I don't have any previous version of Adobe apps, but now I need Photoshop and GoLive and I don't want to pay $1200. There's some good deals on eBay, but I'm afraid those are mostly fakes or copies.by MikeH - Café LA Re: more memory for G5 and FCP5 - 18 years agoWhen I recently ordered my G5 (about a month ago now), the person at Apple tried to sell me additional RAM. I told her I was buying it on my own for a lot less money. She told me about the warranty issues with it and asked where I was planning on getting the memory from. I said Crucial and she told me that's what Apple puts in the G5. Good enough for Apple, good enough for me. I also used Crby MikeH - Café LA Re: Converting to Quicktime Pro - 18 years agoGo to System Preferences and select Quicktime. It should already be on the Register tab (if not then click on Register). In the Registered To: field it should say "Apple Pro Apps User". If it does then that means you have Quicktime Pro. If that's not there, then you don't have Quicktime Pro. At that point I would suggest uninstalling Quicktime (delete the files from the library that Aby MikeH - Café LA Re: OT AFI Top 100 Movie Quotes - 18 years agoMakes you wonder what some of the people who vote on these lists are thinking. There's a bunch of quotes that shouldn't be on that list or they just picked the wrong ones from the right movies. Here's some of my favs that didn't make it.... "I got a bad feeling about this." (multiple characters in the Star Wars trilogies) "Get away from her you bitch!" The figures you give are per week?by MikeH - Café LA Starting out - 18 years agoThis is purposely going to be a little vague... How much could someone expect to get paid if hired into an entry level job at a post house? Suppose this person doesn't really have much experience, except for some college projects and some freelance FCP editing of live performances that are nothing really special and don't fully show off capabilities. The person knows how to use FCP, Motion, Soby MikeH - Café LA Re: Lafcp Clips & Tricks Of The Month - 18 years agoI like it, but there should be a text description of how it was done so we can learn from them.by MikeH - Café LA Re: How are the messages organized? - 18 years agoOkay, I figured out how to delete cookies for this site only. I still get the same thing though. Any ideas?by MikeH - Café LA Re: How are the messages organized? - 18 years agoWell, everything works fine on other message forums I participate on. Is there a way to delete cookies only for this site? I'm using Safari on OS X 10.4.1, latest version. I tried logging out too, and I get the same result whether threads are expanded or collapsed. When I logged out it wouldn't show that I logged out (I still had the "Logout" link on the page. I had to go to a diffby MikeH - Café LA Re: Order to learn programs - 18 years agoYou are right... at times he was known to be a bit of a fibber. I don't see why he would fib about that one little shot though. He never actually said *he* did the shaking. Specifically he said "These are pulsations that I get by shaking the camera by hand or dollying backward and forward, or sometimes by doing both." It's on page 222. He could have easily just been telling the DPby MikeH - Café LA How are the messages organized? - 18 years agoI noticed that the order of the messages in the forums doesn't conform to any specific method. I thought it was based on the date/time of the newest post, but it doesn't seem exactly that way all the time. There are messages for a few minutes ago after messages from this morning in the list. And messages show as "new", but the newest post in that thread was from this morning and I'veby MikeH - Café LA Re: Order to learn programs - 18 years agoI was simply asking for suggestions on the best order to learn the different programs. For example, I would assume you would want to learn FCP and get familiar with it before you jump into Motion. I just wanted to make sure I was on the right track. Thanks for the advice though.by MikeH - Café LA Re: OT: Quake damage offer - 18 years agoI wonder if this will lead up to the "BIG ONE" or more additional moderate quakes. Just in the last few days there's been a lot of activity around the Pacific Ring of Fire... 7.2 off the coast of Northern California, 6.8 in Alaska, 5.5 in Southern California, 7.8 in Chile, and now again there's a 5.3 in Southern California today. And what's with downgrading these things all the time aby MikeH - Café LA Re: Order to learn programs - 18 years agoI'm interested to know where you got your information. I've actually studied Hitchcock specifically, and even took a film school class dedicated to him. This subject actually came up. It was a few years ago, so I don't remember which one, but it is in one of Donald Spoto's books on Hitchcock, "The Dark Side of Genius" or "The Art of Alfred Hitchcock". If you need me to I sby MikeH - Café LA Re: Order to learn programs - 18 years agoThanks for your advice and suggestions, but I respectfully disagree with you... mostly. It is entirely possible to be talented and have the skills in multiple areas and produce outstanding work. I'll use Robert Rodgriguez as an example: On more than one occasion he has been the following in his various films: writer, director, DP, editor, producer, composer, camera operator, sound recorder, soby MikeH - Café LA Re: Order to learn programs - 18 years agoI plan on using multiple methods to learn. The training and tutorial books are only the beginning. Where I'll learn the most is through actual work. I won't feel comfortable taking on any projects unless I have a good idea of how to accomplish and complete pretty much anything that will be thrown at me.by MikeH - Café LA Re: Order to learn programs - 18 years agoI am really looking to be a writer, director, and editor. I want to write my own movies (features), direct them, and then edit them so that my vision is correctly realized at the end. The reason I want to learn how to do the graphics, vfx, and sound production/mixing is because that's all part of the post production. I feel it's important for someone who works in editing (or any other post posby MikeH - Café LA Re: Order to learn programs - 18 years agoIan, I'm not looking for a best practices order for making a movie. I'm looking for the best order to learn the software. There's a big difference. I know that in post production you jump from one piece of software to the next. Learning is different though. I want to learn each program individually, and then after that, learn how they interoperate between each other. I'm just wondering whiby MikeH - Café LA Compression explanation - 18 years agoDoes anyone know of a good web site that explains compression? I'm referring to how to understand 4:1:0 or 4:2:2 and designations like that. Thanks!by MikeH - Café LA |
