Getting 24p to look good on DVD - 10 years agoMany people love DSLR technology and have been shooting 24p to get the film look everyone seems to love. I shoot 24p on Canon 7D and 60D (convert to ProRes using Philip Bloom's MPEG Streamclip workflow), edit in 24p and export my final edit to a 24p self contained QuickTime. It looks pretty good on screen, looks pretty good on Vimeo, but looks awful on DVD (I use Compressor's presets for DVby CaseyPetersen - Café LA Moving chapter markers - 10 years agoIs it possible to move all the chapter markers along with all my clips on the timeline? I edited my project, and then placed chapter markers for use in DVD Studio Pro. Now I need to add a 2 minute sequence to the beginning of the project. When I select all clips and move them ahead on my timeline to make room, the chapter markers do not follow the clips. Is there a way to make them all moveby CaseyPetersen - Café LA Re: Recommendations for capturing HDV thru component - 10 years agoOh, but it would be capable of capturing as HDV though, which would be all I would need in my particular instance. Thanks much! Timecode is not necessary. Are there more options for a Mac Pro than the MacBook Pro? Thanks! Caseyby CaseyPetersen - Café LA Recommendations for capturing HDV thru component - 10 years agoWe still use the old Sony Z1U cameras for a few projects from time to time, and only one of ours has a working firewire output...the others have been blown out and the costly repairs to them are not in the budget. I'm wondering about being able to capture component HDV video, and I know there are several products out there, but I would appreciate a recommendation on an affordable (yes, I meaby CaseyPetersen - Café LA Re: sourcing from YouTube - 10 years agoI use MPEG Streamclip to Open URL and convert to whatever format I'm using. Otherwise, I use the DownloadHelper plugin for Firefox to download the original mp4. I am well aware of how easy it is to fry the firewire output on the camera if it is not turned off and plugged in (in the proper sequence), and another one recently got fried...that now makes 3 out of 4 that no longer work. Repair is expensive and not covered under warranty, and I was wondeby CaseyPetersen - Café LA Re: OT-Old Day Editing Systems - 11 years agoJVC VHS to VHS editor - 1991-1993 Adobe Premiere - 1993-1995 Video Toaster (A/B Roll with 3/4" tape) - 1995-1997 Video Toaster Flyer - 1997-1999 DPS Velocity - 1999-2005 Newtek Toaster2 - 2000-2001 Final Cut Pro - 2005-present (am transitioning to Premiere, either used in tandem or as a replacement to FCP) Adobe Premiere - present-?by CaseyPetersen - Café LA Re: Multi-cam shoot with 3 different formats..am I asking for trouble in the edit? - 11 years agoI would check the sequence settings to see if the processing mode is in 8 bit YUV or 10 bit YUV. 10 bit requires more computing power.by CaseyPetersen - Café LA Re: Multi-cam shoot with 3 different formats..am I asking for trouble in the edit? - 11 years agoI'll have to try that new fangled multi-cam sometime...they must have changed something since the last two versions I did a quick test, putting 1440x1080 Sony HDV clips on a 1920x1080 timeline, and putting 1920x1080 Canon clips on a 1440x1080 timeline. After adjusting for the correct frame size/aspect ratio (so the image filled the screen properly), I did not see one pixel's difference bby CaseyPetersen - Café LA Changing default DVD drive - 11 years agoIs there a way to change the settings in DVD Studio Pro so that it will burn to my external DVD drive instead of the internal DVD drive? Right now, it seems to pick one or the other at random. Thanks! Caseyby CaseyPetersen - DVD Studio Pro Re: Multi-cam shoot with 3 different formats..am I asking for trouble in the edit? - 11 years agoThe Canon should be importing at 1920x1080, the Sony imports at 1440x1080. When I import the Sony clips, they are enlarged 133.33% (and the distort is -33.33% as well). That being said, I wonder what would happen if I tried to bring the Canon clips down to 1440x1080 to match the Sony. I don't actually use multi-cam editing in the way that FCP intended it to be. The cameras handle colors very differently, and the times when I've had to do it, I have found that the best color grading I can do (using 3-way color corrector, that is), is only barely acceptable...wherby CaseyPetersen - Café LA Re: A whole lotta sharpening going on - 11 years agoVery interesting. Along these same lines, is it common to do, at the very least, just a little bit of sharpening across the boards (generally speaking) on footage you're working with? Thanks! Caseyby CaseyPetersen - Café LA Re: A whole lotta sharpening going on - 11 years agoIs that mostly in-camera or done in post?by CaseyPetersen - Café LA A whole lotta sharpening going on - 11 years agoI'm wondering something here...it seems in the past couple years, especially with the popularity of larger HDTVs to the general public, many newer TV shows have seemingly been going to a much sharper look. What I'm wondering is if this observation is correct, or if this is a natural result of higher quality cameras/lenses. If there is more sharpening being done in post, I would be interesby CaseyPetersen - Café LA Re: My Lacie external hard drive that has all my FCP projects has "corruption of the data on the drive" - 11 years agoMy demo of MiniTool Mac Data Recovery is the only software that recognizes there is a drive connected to my Mac in the first place....what good is DiskWarrior when the drive doesn't show up on your desktop?? Maby CaseyPetersen - Café LA Re: My Lacie external hard drive that has all my FCP projects has "corruption of the data on the drive" - 11 years agoI use iBackup to automatically make a backup of my Projects folder (as well as other important folders that have constantly changing data), I have it set to backup every night to a separate hard drive. Many of my projects use video that is off tape, so as long as I backup the project file, the video files can always be recaptured from the original tapes. I think you hit it!! I never noticed that it went to 10 bit high precision YUV when I tried ProRes. I am running another test with a 30 second clip, this time, I changed it to 8 bit YUV: XDCam - 1'35" ProRes422 - 1'10" ProRes Proxy - 0'40" (obviously faster...doing what it's intended to do) ProResLT - 0'55" HDV - 1'08"by CaseyPetersen - Café LA Re: Simple ProRes proxy question - 11 years agoI think this article from Larry Jordan explains why I am having trouble with ProRes: Look at the two tables referring to hard drive speeds and video data rates by codec. According to this, HDV has a data transfer rate of 3.75mbps, XDCam EX is 5.2mbps, ProRes Proxy is 5.6mbps, and ProRes422 is 18.1mbps. So, in my world where the HDV codec has been perfectly acceptable for 6 years, Xby CaseyPetersen - Café LA Re: Simple ProRes proxy question - 11 years agoYeah, I've heard that before! A few years ago, I posted on here quite frequently and tried to figure it out why ProRes was so slow for me, but with no definitive answers. The best I can figure is my hard drives are too slow. I am using a Mac Pro 2 x 3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon with 10 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM memory, running OSX 10.6.8. I am using the latest Final Cut Studio software as well.by CaseyPetersen - Café LA Re: Simple ProRes proxy question - 11 years agoActually, I was using XDCam EX, not HD. I ran a bunch of tests, and with my Mac Pro, which is 5 years old, would now be considered old and slow, and my hard drives aren't fast enough either. Using HDV footage as my baseline, working with XDcam EX took maybe 5% more time to render effects, exporting, etc., so that was pretty good to keep up with the workflow I have been accustomed to. Say I have 10 hours budgeted to edit an entire wedding (clients want more, but also want to pay less, but that's another conversation altogether!) into a 10 minute edit, it hasn't been practical for me to do it in PR422 because of the added render times. Take a clip from my Canon 60D - convert it three ways (XDCam EX, ProRes Proxy, ProRes 422). Open in QuickTime, look at properties: XDCam - data rate = 36.62 mbps ProRes Proxy - data rate = 44.11 mbps ProRes 422 - data rate = 147.70 mbps According to this, the data rate of PR Proxy is higher than XDCam EX...is it correby CaseyPetersen - Café LA Re: What TV shows are being shot on what equipment? - 11 years agoI read that No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain is starting to use a 7D, and I saw on the latest "behind the scenes" show from Deadliest Catch, they used a few 5DMKIIs.
