Re: re: Live (screen?) capturing - 12 years agoThanks, I have FCP Academic (version 5.4), which does not have Pro Res. My budget is tight so it may be awhile when I can purchase a new FCP. The h264 info(using 5000kps) is very helpful. Thanksby John Anderson - Café LA Re: re: Live (screen?) capturing - 12 years agoI am now using Apple Intermediate 720p to record the screen tutorials I am making for my class. I am assuming the "p" stands for progressive? Since these will be posted online I am also assuming this is the right selection. Also, I am placing these recorded files into my time-line and keeping the Apple Intermediate p setting for the sequence. Once I have rendered and edited theseby John Anderson - Café LA Re: re: Live (screen?) capturing - 12 years agoAll of this is very helpful. I'll start looking into it. Thanksby John Anderson - Café LA Re: re: Live (screen?) capturing - 12 years agoRight. Up to this point I used Animation, PNG r photoJPEG for everything I was doing(mostly animation). I'll need to expand my knowledge base around these things. Thanks again.by John Anderson - Café LA Re: re: Live (screen?) capturing - 12 years agoThanks for staying with this. I'll use "Apple intermediate"which does look good for this project. I need to become more familiar with the range of codecs that exist. Any tutorials or resources on this subject or is it trial and error?by John Anderson - Café LA Re: re: Live (screen?) capturing - 12 years agoOk I'll look into this but I'm on a tight budget. What about the Apple Intermediate 720p codec, which I have? It seems pretty good on test. Is the Pro Res significantly better? I'll look to see if anyone in my area has the ProRes and check it out. Best, Johnby John Anderson - Café LA Re: re: Live (screen?) capturing - 12 years agoHi, I'm on FCP(Academic) 5.1.4 I Googled Apple Pro Res and now understand why it might be a good solution. It definitely is not on my version of FCP and the Academic versions are notorious for little or no upgrades. Is there a way to install ProRes or do I need to purchase the next level of FCP? I usually use the Animation codec but I am interested in trying out your suggestion.by John Anderson - Café LA Re: re: Live (screen?) capturing - 12 years agoMy content needed to be re-sized on my 1680x1050 screen. I made that content around 1280x720 and captured @ that size. I experimented with different codecs. So far the one that looks the best is apple "intermediate" 1280x720. Things are definitely looking better. Also, I'm capturing at 15 frames, which was suggested by someone else. Does this make sense? I'm still not sure what ProResby John Anderson - Café LA Re: re: Live (screen?) capturing - 12 years agoThis is where I need help understanding exactly what ProRes is. Is it the preset in iShowu and FCP that is 1280x720 and/or 1920x1080? I also see an "intermediate" 1280x720 and/or 1920x1080. When you say edit with that, do you mean keep the sequence settings exactly the same? As you can tell I'm new at this. Thanksby John Anderson - Café LA Re: re: Live (screen?) capturing - 12 years agoHi, I'm a teacher and I use digital media in my courses. I was pretty psyched to see this post as I'm just starting to use iShowU HD pro to make a series of tutorials for a course I'm teaching. Right now I'm a little stumped as I have been trying to test each preset and figure out what will give me the best quality in FCP. Once it's in FCP I add some audio, a logo and titles etc. Should the sby John Anderson - Café LA Re: HDV 720p codec for animation - 13 years agoThanks again. Shortly after my last post a friend turned me on to this site: It may not be up to date but it has a lot of great info. I always used Animation, PhotoJPEG or PNG but the Three/d environment(Cinema 4D) is making me look around at other solutions. I am working on FCP 5.6 / dual Mac powerPc. Maybe the ProRess444 will inspire me to upgrade.by John Anderson - Café LA Re: HDV 720p codec for animation - 13 years agoThanks for the information. I did not know that. I'll stick with the codecs I have had success with in the past.by John Anderson - Café LA HDV 720p codec for animation - 13 years agoHi, I'm making an animated film that combines Cinema 4D and traditional hand-drawings. In the past, I used the codecs Animation, Photojpeg, or PNG in Quicktime. Files sizes were always large. I'm working in a 1280/720 format for the first time and tried the HDV 720p 30 as an experiment. Everything looks great and the file sizes are small compared to the others. So what's up with the escape key?by John Anderson - Café LA FCP 4.5/computer will not open - 14 years agoI use FCP Final Cut Pro 4.5 HD, which I just reinstalled on a new/used computer. This is a much faster Power Mac G5 PC, 2.3 duo with a Nividia 6600 graphics card. The installation was smooth and everything works except the main attraction-Final Cut. A message states I need an AGP graphics card. I went to Apple support and downloaded an upgrade, which was supposed to fix the problem but it's stby John Anderson - Café LA Soundtrack Pro 1.0.3 - 14 years agoHi, I'm switching to new computer and found that I cannot reinstall Soundtrack as the serial number has become invalid. Anyone else had this problem? I've tried the Apple docs suggestions but no success.by John Anderson - Soundtrack Pro Re: hooking up hdtv to PowerMac G5 - 14 years agoAnyone out there have any experience with an NEC monitor? I found a 26" for a reasonable price. Also, Lacie has a 24" monitor that looked great hooked up to a Mac. Yes, both are expensive but there are deals out there if you look.by John Anderson - Café LA Re: hooking up hdtv to PowerMac G5 - 14 years agoYour probably right but I find I always come out of these investigations all the wiser. One of the courses I teach is stop-motion animation and "experimental" video. I am also responsible for ordering and maintaining all of the equipment. This forum has always provided a great resource, which I share with my students.by John Anderson - Café LA Re: hooking up hdtv to PowerMac G5 - 14 years agoI just wanted to follow up on this post. The Dell Ultra look great as does the Gateway 24". However, I discovered from one Apple store manager that Apple will be coming out with new monitors in the next month to six weeks. So I think I'll wait a bit longer. Thanks to everyone who responded.by John Anderson - Café LA Re: hooking up hdtv to PowerMac G5 - 14 years agoI love the Apple displays as well, which makes this process frustrating. I currently work on a 20" display, which has been excellent and crystal clear for five years. I have probably become an Apple snob over the years. Apparently the new 24" Apple display will not work on a Power Mac G5 like mine. At least that was what I was told at the Apple store? I'll try and borrow a Dell 2by John Anderson - Café LA hooking up hdtv to PowerMac G5 - 14 years agoHi, I recently posted a request for information regarding hooking up two screens for editing. The responses were helpful. I borrowed an apple monitor from work and hooked it up to my Power Mac G5 1.8GHz. It worked fine but I discovered I really do not like two screens unlike most folks. I really would like one larger screen. The Apple 30" is way overpriced in my opinion and I have read thby John Anderson - Café LA Connecting two PowerPC-G5's together - 14 years agoHi, I just posted a question the other day regarding setting up dual LCD Apple monitors. After doing some more research I was wondering if anyone out there has two Macs connected (daisy chained) together for more processing power. Right now I cannot afford new equipment so I'm looking to buy used. I currently have a Power Mac G5 1.8GHz. I love this Forum..by John Anderson - Café LA Setting up Dual Apple LCD Displays - 14 years agoHi, I'm thinking of adding a second 20"LCD monitor(used) to my Power Mac G5 for editing in both FCP and After Effects plus Cinema 4D. I was wondering if anyone has any advice. I have read both positive and negative results. My computer has been working just great so I get a little nervous whenever I make major changes. Best , Johnby John Anderson - Café LA Re: Print to Tape problems - 14 years agoThanks- I am experimenting with different export solutions for DVDs and your information is helpful. I keep reading that the Animation codec is great for pieces that have large flat areas of color but not pieces that have a lot of motion. Does this information line up with your experience? Jandy48by John Anderson - Café LA Re: Print to Tape problems - 14 years agoThanks, I have never used the TGA sequence but I have used PNG. Also, I have used Animation and the Photo-Jpeg has given me good results. However , with Animation and other codecs I am never quite sure how or if I should key-frame and how to calculate the best settings. The other thing is I do not use Compressor and just export a reference quicktime into DVD Studio Pro. Are there advantagesby John Anderson - Café LA Re: Print to Tape problems - 14 years agoHi, Thanks for responding. Regarding the None "setting"- I am creating and editing animation clips made in Photoshop to Flash to Quicktime to After Effects to FCP. I am assuming that None is the least destructive export before I compress the file for a DVD. Are there any other settings that you would recommend?by John Anderson - Café LA Re: Print to Tape problems - 14 years agoOk, I figured it out. My compressor settings needed to be changed in the SEquence settings from none to DV/DVCPro NTSC. (I use none for export to DVD Studio Pro). Once I re-rendered the sequence at these new settings everything worked out. Trashed Preferences, Refresh av, plug and unplug the fire wire cable and reset the preferences, which might be the problem as I start to get confused after many tries.
