From mid 2014 may not be a big enough jump. I'm thinking on my Late 2013 as well. Your needs and workflows are key though. Four Thunderbolt 3 ports is impressive. As someone who live streams that may be more important than any impact on FCPX. Do you think you'll see advantages moving to TB3? The Touch Bar will probably have greater value in the next couple of FCPX updates assuming you like iby craig seeman - Café LA - X

My understanding is that FCPX will capture it in the HDV codec and put it in a .mov container. I believe the HDV codec can be "optimized" (converted to ProRes after capture is complete).by craig seeman - Café LA - X

Unfortunately you'll have to know how you managed your projects. When importing files into FCPX you can "Leave them in place" or import them into an FCPX Library. You may need to open FCPX and see where the files are for each project. Personally I'd never delete source files. I don't delete Libraries either. It's not clear how you're trying to open the cards. Built in Card Reader? External Card Reader? Straight from Camera via USB? Do the cards mount on your Desktop? It's still not clear what versions of OS and FCPX you're using on each computer. You need to explain what you mean by "clips wont' open on my desktop" as this would have nothing to do with FCPX>by craig seeman - Café LA - X

Is this the SAME CARD and MEDIA? Keep in mind files can become corrupt. One recording fine and the next bad. FCPX needs to see the metadata INTACT or it will not identify it as proper source media. I never open cards directly. I use FCPX Camera Archive first. I then know I'm working from a verified copy. FCPX will see it as a camera card.by craig seeman - Café LA - X

I think you may need to clarify software and system OS versions. I don't think a PowerBook can run any recent Mac OS let alone FCPX.by craig seeman - Café LA - X

In FCPX you can rename the clips. Rename the clips in FCPX will not have any negative impact linking back to the source clips (which can be either internal or external to the library as you see fit).by craig seeman - Café LA - X

Mid 2011 27' iMac has two Thunderbolt ports. No USB3 ports, only USB2. 2011 21.5" iMac only has Firewire and USB2. Don't upgrade OS in the middle of a project.by craig seeman - Café LA - X

You should be able to do that within FCPX. As to the impact, it may depend what they're being used for. It could impact playback depending on your system. Personally I don't render anything unless absolutely necessary (and sometimes it may be necessary).by craig seeman - Café LA - X

You could use the built in function in FCPX. Keep in mind DVDs are Standard Definition though. A ProRes Master would give you the best quality file if you're using an external DVD authoring solution. Keep in mind it's still going to have to be downscaled to Standard Def so you have to consider what program can do that best. Having used a 2011 15" Quad i7 MBP which is similar CPU, it's going to be be sluggish for some things. Editing will be OK. FX work will be difficult as well as some grading. If you can find late 2013 27" Quad i7 it would be much better.by craig seeman - Café LA - X

There are no third party GPUs for current Mac models, just build to order options. You'd want AMD Radeon R9 M395X with 4GB of GDDR5 memory if you're going to be using Resolve. That's the top option on the 27" iMac. I wouldn't want to be limited to the Iris Pro except for general purpose work or light editing. Even a lot of FX plugins depend on the GPU these days.by craig seeman - Café LA - X

Since you mention color correction and compression so that's an important indicator. Since Digitbeta is standard def you may (or may not) need to upscale to HD as well. I'm not sure why you mention an "inexpensive Mac for general purpose" unless you're implying you want to continue to delay the project. For a solo user there's some nice improvements but probably not earthshaking. For a video shop working in a shared environment, this is major. This is NOT the sexy stuff of "news headlines." Some small number of shops can switch to or at least integrate it. The bigger impact will be in new startup facilities. FCPX was out of the question before. Now it's a significant player. I got a few moments to bend Steve Bayes, FCPX Product Manager, at the Blackmagic Road Show in NY August 8 so I'd thought I'd share my own interpretations so it doesn't get anyone in trouble. Some are speculating that. I could see another FCPX update sooner if the MPs don't come 'till late December. Some have speculated a big feature release followed by a released focused on GPR related things for the MP. The rumor mills are very quiet.by craig seeman - Café LA - X

Since I don't want to start with wrong assumptions... You created the proxies within FCPX? You know how to relink to created proxies vs original or optimized media? You mention you copied files. If you didn't do this inside FCPX it can confuse FCPX since it does file id metadata so it knows which is which. BTW you may want to confirm that you're on FCPX 10.0.8.by craig seeman - Café LA - X

It does seem you're in a fairly "unusual" situation. In your case convenience does seem to win given speed isn't important and money isn't a great concern. For speed (although not critical for you) many have found the 2012 27" iMac with Quad i7 and nVidia 680MX to be faster than the MacPros, in regards FCPX. Another way to look at it. You can have any number of Events. You can have any number of Sequences (FCPX calls them Projects). A Sequence can be associated with one or more Events although initially you tie it to one Event. To me it's more like a Database in which you are free to build Relationships. If you're asking in the general sense I'd always chose speed. Speed is related to generating income. "A little slower" understates the speed differences between most (not all) MacPro Box configurations and other current computers. At this point if you need internal expansion specifically I'd choose a new HP or Dell workstation over a MacPro Box. Granted there are cases where internby craig seeman - Café LA - X

FCP X was well-represented as part of other displays all over the floor. Outside of Sony he doesn't mention where else but the above line might indicate it was visible in a number of locations. This has nothing to do with my perception. Again, I think Oliver isn't biased or inclined to mislead.
