New ATI card for MAC/PC 4x/8x with 256 MB DDR - 18 years agoCheck this out: Here is the text from macnn.com ATI Technologies today introduced the Radeon 9600 Pro, a new graphics card that supports both Mac and PC platforms. The Radeon 9600 Pro offers dual-link capabilities to support ultra high-resolution flat panel monitors such as Apple's 30-inch Cinema Display. The new card features ATI's most popular graphics processors for AGP-based systems -- theby John Foley - Café LA Re: graphic card failed after update - 18 years agoThe ATI 9700 was an Apple only card that was not available in the channel. What card to replace it with? There are not many available for a 4x AGP slot. One I know for sure that works is the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition but it does not have an ADC, rather a DVI and an AGP output(s). I have one inside my Quicksilver 2002 dual 1.0 GHz. I also had to spend another $100 for a DVI-ADC adapter to rby John Foley - Café LA Re: multiple video angles in fcp5 + I only need two audio tracks - 18 years agoTo do a multicam edit in FCP 5, you need to first import all those video clips (with Timecode) into the browser. You can choose to import only one set of mono tracks from one camera and all the other captures would be video only. You need a primary audio tracks(s) associated with one of the clips. When logging those clips from different camera's; you will need to manually rename the clips per cby John Foley - Café LA Re: Basics of "Onlining" - 18 years agoHUH??? DVDPROHD or 100 runs at about 100 Mb/sec as it comes across Firewire from the compressed tape in the camera. That is what FCP 4 was all about. I realize that DVCPRO 25 was 25 Mb/sec and DVCPRO50 was 50 Mb/sec but DVCPRO 100/HD was equipt to output over Firewire to the system. Just like DV , it is in the same arena of bitrates. Not 100 MB/sec as is uncompressed HDby John Foley - Café LA Re: Finally, a Non-Frivolous Post! - 18 years agoCompetition man - it's all about getting you to give them your money. According to different video mags, there are wonderful editing tools out there and AVID is one of them. I think that the practice of trying to make an NLE system all things to all people is troublesome. Each tool is going to appeal to a different person with a different mindset. Some would like After Effects built into their eby John Foley - Café LA Re: Basics of "Onlining" - 18 years agoMy reason for asking is that HDV and DVCPRO100 is about the same data rate as DV, so disk bandwidth is not a real consideration that way uncompressed HD would be. With Final Cut Pro it is always about Onlining vs offline first because FCP can do any format from DV to HD uncompressed with equal ease.by John Foley - Café LA Re: Do DVCPRO tapes ever degrade? - 18 years agoAll tapes degrade with time. Since the basis for tape is metal particles, oxidization is a reality for tapes of all flavors. Genrally that takes years, of course.by John Foley - Café LA Re: Basics of "Onlining" - 18 years agoWhich HI DEF format are you utilizing ? Uncompressed? DVDPRO100? HDV?by John Foley - Café LA Re: FCP 5 Problems capturing on External FW - 18 years agoIt may just be that FCP 5 has finally outgrown a Powetbook for editing? I find it interesting that so many people think a single processor G4 can perform as well as a dual processor G5 where FCP is concerned??? I don't think there are any Serial ATA PCM cards for a Powerbook - are there? ""I sold my FCP 4.X software so going backwards is not an option""???????? (How did youby John Foley - Café LA Re: drive recommendation - 18 years agoAt least 2 Serial ATA drives striped as a RAID 0 with a PCI SATA adapter card would give you close to 90-100 MB/sec. The more stripes you can add, the faster the bandwidth.by John Foley - Café LA Re: external drives - 18 years agoJason, I just did a quick read of your .mac blog about storage for HD. That is some good work. I know that most video type people are very wary of doing their own work and that can sometimes limit their decisions on hardware. While your assertions that SATA are mostly better than Firewire, you made a point about Apple not trusting SATA drives in their XServe, rather ATA for a reason (supposedlyby John Foley - Café LA Re: external drives - 18 years ago""G-RAID products have gotten some glowing reviews online. However you can install as 4 additional drives and use them individually. MY G4 has 4 drives internally. Two 120 GB drives for boot and data and two additional 250 GB drives as SATA RAID 0. No matter which you choose - get the dual processor version. Bytheway (BTW) Since this IS a tower G5, look at Serial ATA internal drives for log and capture. They are faster and more stable than external Firewire drives.by John Foley - Café LA Re: external drives - 18 years agoWhat is the FCP system? A powerbook?? A G5 tower?? If it is a G5 tower then stay away from Firewire drives for log and capture. If it is a Powerbook, then you don't have a choice.by John Foley - Café LA Re: Prepping in FCP for a digital projector - 18 years agoIs the projected image coming from Standard Definition (720 x 486) or 1920 x 1080 (HighDef) A projector is no different from a television where the pixel count is concerned.by John Foley - Café LA Mixed codecs on timeline (ala Cinewave) - 18 years agoIs there a hint that FCP 5 will gain the ability to deal with mixed codec formats soon as a .dot release update? I have heard a rumor and that is all.by John Foley - Café LA Re: 4 hour time limit - 18 years agoIf it's of any consolation - FCP 5 has a 12 hour project per sequence limit.by John Foley - Café LA Re: slug ? - 18 years agoWell, try the "trashing preferences" thing to see if that will cure this problem. Only problem, trashing prefs is a per application thing.by John Foley - Café LA Re: slug ? - 18 years agoOpening a NEW project should get rid of the Slug in the Viewer of the new project. If it is in the Viewer of the current project, it is of little concern if you can double click another clip in the browser and open IT successfully in that Viewer.by John Foley - Café LA Re: FCP HD and Tiger Problem - 18 years agoIt is very common that when Apple ships a system with a certain level of the OS installed, that it is impossible to go backward because of firmware versions. If you are planning on loading 10.3.x on this new eMac; check around to see IF you can load up Panther on this machine successfully. It is true, that FCP HD is best on Panther 10.3.7-8 and Studio or FCP 5 is best on Tiger 10.4.2by John Foley - Café LA Re: wnat to upgrade to FCP5/Soundtrack Pro - 18 years agoThere is only one video card that I know of that will enable you to run Motion 1 or 2 on a Quicksilver 2002 dual 1.0 GHz MAC. The ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition 2x/4x AGP 128 MB DDR. Trouble is, it is either out of production or going out so finding one is getting harder every minute. After that, there will not be one video card for a G4 that can support Motion. www.barefeats.com lists whereby John Foley - Café LA Re: eliminating hum with wireless mic - 18 years agoThere are myriad problems when using wireless mics with on site audio capturing. Assuming that it is not a ground loop caused by AC plugged into different circuits; there are many issues like background hum, overhead fluorescent lights and any RF source that can be received by the unit. Your interim connection from 1/4" to XLR could introduce hum if the unit is improperly installed or defeby John Foley - Café LA Re: exporting for idvd for NTSC playback - 18 years agoThe simplest way I know about converting PAL to NTSC is the Nattress Standards converter plugin. www.nattress.com This process was very costly until just recently and although I have not used it, those who have, highly rate this conversion tool. It requires adding or subtracting (frames 25-29.97) to make the content clean (plus pixel size difference) Typically, PAL DVD's will not play in an NTby John Foley - Café LA Re: Multi-cam filtering - 18 years agoSounds like all the cameras were not white balanced to the same room. It is important to notice this before you start any major editing. You need to color correct the entire clip(s) first, then edit. This is going to reguire that you capture the entire tape to your hard drive and open it into a FCP Timeline. You then need to determine what correction needs to be performed to match the other tapby John Foley - Café LA Re: OSX Tiger compatibility - 18 years agoI agree with that exactly. When I upgraded to Tiger, I simply removed the Panther boot disk and loaded it into a Firewire case. I replaced it with a larger disk and started fresh. That way I can explore the latest OS while having my time tested version at hand. The last thing you want to do is to load Tiger over the top of Panther and expect it to work flawlessly. And, I have FCP HD and FCP 5 aby John Foley - Café LA Re: multi camera edit plugin? - 18 years agoFinal Cut Pro 5 enables you to sync up and edit up to 128 streams of video. Typically, it has been shown with 8-16 clips loaded with a Multiclip in the timeline. Actually, FCP's implementation is one of the slickest I have seen.by John Foley - Café LA Re: What Is General Error 34? - 18 years agoWell, I know that General Order 66 is "kill all the jedi", but I am not sure what General Error 34 is?by John Foley - Café LA Re: FCP 5 to 4 !! - 18 years agoUpgrading his system to FCP 5 would be the best route for ease of transfer. Other methods are time consuming and troublesome. You can most always go up but not back.by John Foley - Café LA Re: Benefits of Raid or Sata Drives? - 18 years agoYou didn't mention the type of format you will be editing. DV doesn't require more that a single drive for log and capture. Standard Definition requires a small RAID of two or more drives to allow capturing 20 MB/sec or better. The currently available RAID software in Panther or Tiger can set up two or more drives as stripes and with Serial ATA drives, each stripe is good for about 50 MB/sec afby John Foley - Café LA |
