Crashing when I send to FCP - 13 years agoI'm running FCS3, on Snow Leopard, and I've got a 4 minute sequence that crashes Color every time I send it back to FCP. This is a first for me. I don't often use Color, and in the past I've just sent little parts of sequences back and forth between FCP and Color. This time, however, I sent the whole sequence over. All the layers, all the graphics, the works. In Color, it all worked fine. Wby jwilliam - Color Re: Connecting a Sony Z1U to FCP 7? - 13 years agoNevermind... Post-game I found a menu in "Audio/Video Settings" with a Sony-specific capture setting that wasn't in the log-and-capture tool. Odd, but it works.by jwilliam - Café LA Connecting a Sony Z1U to FCP 7? - 13 years agoI know everybody is glued to the game, but has anyone else had troubles connecting a Sony Z1U camera to FCP? I'm trying to capture a couple of tapes of stuff (in the background, while the Super Bowl is going on), but I can't get FCP to recognize the camera. I keep getting the dreaded 'unable to initialize camera' error message. I've got my capture preset to "NTSC firewire" and &quby jwilliam - Café LA Re: Teranex vs. Kona 3 with FCP for hi-def upconverts? - 13 years agoThanks! Shane, since you're LA based & plugged in, any recommendations on where'd be a good place to get a Teranex cost estimate? Even if it's laughably high, it's good to cover the bases. Are they rentable like HDCAM decks? Or is a full on Teranex box the kind of complicated hardware that requires a facility & on-site tech staff for best results?by jwilliam - Café LA Teranex vs. Kona 3 with FCP for hi-def upconverts? - 13 years agoDoes anyone have any experience or opinions on SD to HD upconverting footage with the Teranex? Does it give a notably better result than the Kona 3? Or at least to a degree that justifies the cost? I'm looking at taking on a project that would start with pre-existing shows on digibeta, slightly re-editing and re-formatting them and then outputting to HDCAM with the 4:3 pillar boxes, with the uby jwilliam - Café LA Re: Proxy footage, HDV, and ProRes, oh my! - 13 years agoGroup wisdom prevails! I'm plowing ahead without any transcoding, and so far, DVCPROHD is working like clockwork. And thanks for all the enlightening comments - I sort-of knew a lot of the codec differences, but never had it so cleanly explaind.by jwilliam - Café LA Re: Proxy footage, HDV, and ProRes, oh my! - 13 years agoInteresting, I had no idea it was comparable to 14:1. I'll do some actual edit testing over the weekend and see how the speed is. You might be right about not needing an offline, but then what fun would that be?by jwilliam - Café LA Re: Proxy footage, HDV, and ProRes, oh my! - 13 years agoI have considered digitizing initially in ProRes, but the time/disk space calculator in the Log & Capture window is telling me that DVCPRO-HD takes up less drive space, and at 18 hours, that's actually a consideration for this project. I'm doing a test digitize on a tape to compare the two - DVCPRO-HD and just plain ProRes 422, not (LT) or (HQ).by jwilliam - Café LA Proxy footage, HDV, and ProRes, oh my! - 13 years agoHere's something fun to chew on for the weekend, and if anybody has $0.02 to add, I'd appreciate it. I'm testing out a workflow this weekend for a project I'm starting Monday/Tuesday. Source footage is about 18 hours of 1080i 59.94 DVCPRO-HD. Finished piece will be a 4-6 minute piece delivered letterboxed on standard def DVD. Yes, that's 18 hours for 6 minutes, oh boy! I've got a deck for iby jwilliam - Café LA Re: Matrox PCI card showing up as a network modem? - 13 years agoThanks! Since everything else works just fine, I was planning on ignoring it. Snow Leopard was a little insistent on configuring this when I first re-booted my system, so I wanted to make sure I wasn't screwing the pooch by letting it slide.by jwilliam - Café LA Matrox PCI card showing up as a network modem? - 13 years agoAnyone have a clue what's up with this? I just bought a Matrox MXO2, and when I installed the PCI interface card, my Network Preferences window opened up, showing the card as Matrox...22 Port with a phone modem icon. Did I install the card in a wrong slot? Do I have to configure this card separately somehow? Why would my Mac want to see this as a modem and try to configure an internet connectiby jwilliam - Café LA Upgrading to FCS 3 - re-installing from scratch? - 13 years agoSince it's the slow time of year, I'm taking this opportunity to finally install FCS 3. Here's the fun part - I'm fairly certain that my current install of FCS 2 needs to be uninstalled and reinstalled. On top of that, I'm toying with re-installing Snow Leopard as well so that everything goes in clean & right. The short question is - any tips on making that a smooth & easy process? Iby jwilliam - Café LA Re: Media Manager isn't saving me any space - 13 years agoThanks, Nick. The project is all DVD rips, and I did not know that about needing a reel name to media manage. Brilliant! Jeffby jwilliam - Café LA Media Manager isn't saving me any space - 13 years agoToday's unexplainable quirk is all about the Media Manager. I've got a two minute sequence culled from two hours of footage. I want to give it a media manage to just keep the footage that I'm using with a few seconds of handles, but Media Manager isn't cooperating. When I select Media Manager for my sequence (by right clicking it in the project window), choose "Copy" media, and selecby jwilliam - Café LA Re: new i macs - comments on below - 13 years agoTwo years ago, when I was about to take my first plunge into the world of Mac and FCP, I was thinking exactly the same thing. Get one of those souped-up iMacs to make the investment lighter on the wallet. In the end, I wound up buying a Mac Pro tower and never regretted the decision for a second. Now it depends on what kind of work you're doing, but if you're going to do professional video ediby jwilliam - Café LA Re: Nattress plug-in not rendering properly - 13 years agoJust got some troubleshooting thoughts from Graeme & cleared this up. For the record, setting my timeline to render in 8-bit instead of 10 bit YUV solves the problem nicely. Thanks! Jeffby jwilliam - Café LA Nattress plug-in not rendering properly - 13 years agoI'm working with some standard def footage sourced from DVD (OS X 10.6/FCP 6.0.6). I've applied the Nattress "film plus v2.5.1" plug-in to a bunch of shots, but one group of footage is giving me fits. Every time I try to render the plug-in on the footage from one specific clip, I get a pink-and-green noisy version of my footage squeezed onto the left side of my screen. Re-rendering dby jwilliam - Café LA Re: Re-linked media, can't shake the red "media offline" screen - 13 years agoThanks, Strypes! That's a good idea, but it didn't work, largely because I'm an idiot. I deleted both my "thumbnail cache" and "thumbnail data" files. On the timeline clips, both before and after deleting the caches, the thumbnails turn up perfectly fine and visible. While poking through the timeline, I zoomed out and re-scaled my track sizes to the smallest width. Thisby jwilliam - Café LA Re-linked media, can't shake the red "media offline" screen - 13 years agoI just got the project file & media for a friend's feature & can't shake the "media offline" screen. Everything is re-linked, the audio plays, but the picture is stuck on a "media offline" banner that names one specific clip. That's the only video I get across 80 minutes of picture. I'm working on a copy of the sequence, and have deleted all the plug-ins via a &quoby jwilliam - Café LA Re: Audio playback problem - won't play without rendering - 13 years agoThe QuickTime inspector for the original source footage lists this: Format: H.264, 1280x720, millions, AAC, 2 channels, 44100 Hz FPS: 30 Data rate: 9.11 Mbit/secby jwilliam - Café LA Re: Audio playback problem - won't play without rendering - 13 years agoInteresting theory. Not sure if that's the problem, all my source clips are '.mov' files. Even if they were '.dv' files, wouldn't running them through compressor and switching them to a ProRes codec resolve the problem? That's the part that stumped me -- I tried multiple conversions to a 48K format, and they still needed rendering. I came up with a work-around. I exported the audio from myby jwilliam - Café LA Audio playback problem - won't play without rendering - 13 years agoOK gang, I'm stumped on this one. The short story is that I've got a bunch of clips that won't play back in a timeline without being rendered. I've trouble-shot this every which way I can think of, and have come up empty. Here's the longer version: I got a bunch of footage of dubious provenance, shot by an amateur on an unknown camera. The footage is from some kind of tapeless camera at 128by jwilliam - Café LA Re: Rendered audio clips are jumping - 13 years agoThanks Derek, thought I recalled that there was a bug in the system like this. Converting to 48K AIFF is a good idea, will do that first.by jwilliam - Café LA Re: Betacam SP tapes transfers in L.A. - 13 years agoAlpha Dogs is my go-to for digitizing from Beta. Great rates, especially if you can run the edit bay yourself. Plus they're good friends of LAFCPUG!by jwilliam - Café LA Rendered audio clips are jumping - 13 years agoI'm working on a 48K timeline, and pulling in a bunch of MP3s that need to be rendered before playing back. In the last couple of days, the renders have started to get funky. I'll cut my audio in, and render it out, then when I play it back, it plays back a different part of the source clip at a much different mix level. It seems like FCP is mis-reading its render file, or playing one pre-cby jwilliam - Café LA Re: External monitors - any recommendations? - 13 years agoThanks for the advice. I'm looking into capture cards at the moment, and leaning toward the Blackmagic over the AJA coverter, mostly on the strength of the HDMI output. Glad to know I can get by with a consumer-grade TV. I'll definitely check out the Dell Ultra Sharp line. Thanks! Jeffby jwilliam - Café LA External monitors - any recommendations? - 13 years agoI need to get an HD capable external monitor & my thread-searching skills are coming up short today. All I'm finding are threads on computer monitors. What is the group consensus for a good & reliable external monitor? I'm not making a living doing advanced color-correction, just the good ol' editing basics. Can I get by with a consumer grade LCD HDTV? I know there are some very goby jwilliam - Café LA "Supported Disc Not Available" - 13 years agoI just burned a disc for a client in DVD Studio 4. I used a quicktime source file that I've used a bunch of times before. I drag it into DVDS4, set it as 'first play', and burn the disc. After the disc burns, my Mac Pro tower won't even find the disc. I get nothing - not even a grayed out file on the desktop. The DVD plays fin in a PC laptop, and in two over-the-counter DVD players. Why woby jwilliam - DVD Studio Pro Replicator doesn't keep a mask - 13 years agoI'm following through a tutorial to build a video wall. Cool tutorial, great effect, but one glitch I cannot figure out. I start with a drop zone, and I put a circle image mask on it, to create rounded corners on the drop zone. That drop zone gets replicated, and I arrange it into a 4 X 4 grid. Only the first 2 images have the circle mask on it, the rest are unmasked with square corners.by jwilliam - Motion Creating a glowing light streak in 3D space - 13 years agoI'm trying to create a glowing light streak, much like TNT is using to decorate their current branding. Anyone know a good tutorial that will fly one of those through 3D space? i've got the basics of the stroke and the glowing light shape figured out, but there's got to be easier ways to blow it through 3D space than the laborious point-by-point method I'm currently trying.
