Speakers? - 15 years agoWhat's everyone using for speakers in their edit bays? Forum searching found Shane giving a thumbs up to the M-Audio BX-5a speakers with a Berhinger mixer, everyone else seems pretty quiet on the subject. Any other good speakers out there? Or do most of y'all use those ghastly and omnipresent Rolands? And also -- with that Behringer mixer, does the Mac Pro stock audio card interface easily witby jwilliam - Café LA Re: Clip audio - defaulting to stereo linked pair? - 15 years agoThanks, Derek... That "make offline" tip is great! I've gotten used to getting audio as "stereo pair", so when this project started and the tracks were coming in dual mono, my confusion mounted. And the "control-." to center pan is great, also... would have saved me countless keystrokes on my last project.by jwilliam - Café LA Re: Clip audio - defaulting to stereo linked pair? - 15 years agoThat's what's going on! Thanks! I started a new project and couldn't figure out why my audio wasn't coming through this way... Now I can blame the assistant! Once a clip has been digitized like that, is there a way to stereo-pair the audio from the project window?by jwilliam - Café LA Clip audio - defaulting to stereo linked pair? - 15 years agoSo option-L will make a linked stereo pair out of audio clips in the timeline, but is there a way to have the audio already linked when I drag a clip onto my timeline? Is there an option in the project window that creates a stereo pair for the audio? Or a setting when digitizing? Jeffby jwilliam - Café LA Re: Bulding a slate - 15 years agoHey Mark - In this case, being able to "see" the background video would have been helpful. This client has a wacky slate layout, with information scattered all over the frame... Getting the right info to line up in the right place was a real goat rodeo to do in one pass! I wound up with 12 video layers on the slate for a spot that had only two layers of video. Motion would have bby jwilliam - Café LA Re: Bulding a slate - 15 years agoThat's what I was doing... was hoping there was a more elegant, one-layer method, but stacking and nesting will work. Thanks! Jeffby jwilliam - Café LA Bulding a slate - 15 years agoIs there an easy way to build the title graphics for a slate that match up to a pre-built background? I'm building an output sequence, and the client wants to use a specific backplate. Short of creating a separate title for each element of the slate and building it as individual layers, is there a better way? AVID's title tool lets you work over a background to place individual elements inby jwilliam - Café LA Re: Microphone connection - 15 years agoThe snowball mic works good. I have a USB interface called "Fast Track" that works good too. About the same price as the snowball mic. Might be a bit cheaper - I bought it because I already had a mic, just no appropriate pre-amp.by jwilliam - Café LA Quicktime Conversion preset - 16 years agoIs there any way to save a preset export setting for Quicktime Conversion? Right now, my system seems to default to: Compressor native 659x500 (which is an awfully odd setting, considering that I'm mostly working in 720x486 NTSC). I have an export setting that I like a lot, and I'd love to stop having to punch it in every time I export... the question is, how? Jeffby jwilliam - Café LA Re: Dumbest question of the day - 16 years agoNow that is my vote for 'tip of the week'. Thanks for sharing that!by jwilliam - Café LA Re: Dumbest question of the day - 16 years agoWell, see, that's what makes it the dumbest question of the day! I was combing through 'user settings' and 'audio video settings' and right clicking on anything I could. It never once occurred to me to look under 'view' Thanks!by jwilliam - Café LA Dumbest question of the day - 16 years agoHow do you stop the timeline from automatically looping playback when it reaches the end? I swear I've been through every setting and can't find a way to make the timeline play through once and stop! Jeffby jwilliam - Café LA Non-cinema display monitors - 16 years agoWhat's a good, non-Apple brand of LCD monitor to pick up for running FCP? Will any basic flat-panel LCD work, or what specs should you be looking for in a replacement monitor? That was the original question, and I'm beyond surprised to see the number of Dell proponents around here. The model of choice - 2470WFP - doesn't seem to be available on the Dell website, but this one is: Itby jwilliam - Café LA Re: OT: Avid merging the Avid Xpress Pro software into the Avid Media Composer - 16 years agoThat is some serious news... and for all the AVID bashing that goes on around here, it's funny that I find out about the Media Composer upgrade here. What really speaks volumes is an attempt to re-model the online community... This group is a pretty invaluable resource. When AVID starts making changes to the timeline interface, then you'll see the fear. It's a good press release, anyways. Appeby jwilliam - Café LA Re: Noisy footage from a DV cam - 16 years agoHey Joe - Yeah, I agree with you that DV is DV. That was my first reaction, too, and I'm 90% sure that's the final answer. That margin of doubt mostly stems from me not having a solid, top to bottom understanding of the FCP codec/capture system. I think I can stick with the answer <b>DV is DV</b>, and call it that until I get a chance to see the footage myself. Backing that, I lby jwilliam - Café LA Re: Compressor fails, no explanation - 16 years agoThank you! I'll give that a try. Is this some kind of known Compressor bug? What went wrong?by jwilliam - Café LA Noisy footage from a DV cam - 16 years agoI have a friend who stumped me with a question. He's capturing some footage shot with a Sony DV handycam, and capturing it via Firewire 400 with the DV NTSC setting. The quicktimes that he's bringing in are noisy - or noisier than DV should be. A straight line painted on a wall gets aliased and shifts in the raster. He asked me if I knew what was causing this, and the only answer I couldby jwilliam - Café LA Compressor fails, no explanation - 16 years agoHaving some troubles with Compressor. I've exported a quicktime out of FCP (6.0.2), opened it up in compressor 3.0.2, ran a customized output setting on the footage, and I just get a "failed". I tried a couple of the compressor pre-sets, and they fail also. I don't get any reason for the failed, just a "failed". When I go into Quicktime, and export (using the settings thby jwilliam - Café LA Re: Transferring a project from FCP 6 to FCP 5 - 16 years agoBeautiful! That's what I couldn't find. Thank you! And XML version 2 worked out just fine.by jwilliam - Café LA Transferring a project from FCP 6 to FCP 5 - 16 years agoI have to pass a project over to someone who's running FCP 5, and I originated this project in FCP 6. There has to be a thread that covers this somewhere, but my searching abilities seem impaired this morning. "backwards compatibility" and "XML", among others, are drawing blanks in the search engine. Can someone point me to a thread that might cover this? Or is there a primby jwilliam - Café LA Re: Need Help Working with Matts/Masks in Motion - 16 years agoI'm not a motion expert, but don't over think your problem here... it's not too difficult. To get the edit points to show back up, just control-click or right-click on the layer, and in the drop-down menu select "edit points" instead of "transform". That will bring the bezier handles back up so you can re-shape the mask. For layering, foreground on top, background on botby jwilliam - Motion Re: Matte magic/matte choker not having any effect - 16 years agoJust an addendum - Depending on the Primatte settings of matte density and noise reduction, sometimes the matte magic filter works. Is there a connection between how much influence the Primatte settings have and how much influence additional filters will have? And even better... is there a motion-based tutorial on Primatte and pulling clean keys out there? Everything I'm finding is for Shakby jwilliam - Motion Matte magic/matte choker not having any effect - 16 years agoI'm pulling some greenscreen keys with Primatte, which seems to be doing a tremendous job of it, but I'm still getting some jagged edges. There's some cases where I apply "matte magic", spin the sliders, and then nothing happens. Is there something about Primatte that interferes with matte magic? Or is it something funky with Motion and I should trash my preferences or re-build thingby jwilliam - Motion Re: Clip dragging and copying - 16 years agoAh... the magic word 'before'... that's what I was missing. Thank you! This was making me crazy!by jwilliam - Café LA Clip dragging and copying - 16 years agoOK, I've even turned to the manual on this and couldn't get any clarity. When I option-drag a clip in the timeline, sometimes I get the insert-copy arrow (the straight one) and sometimes I get the insert-move (the arrow with a little curve on the end). What I can't figure out is why sometimes I get one arrow, and sometimes I get the other. Mostly, I get the "copy" function, when rby jwilliam - Café LA Re: OT: Tutorials you'd like to read - 16 years ago> It has its own logic. > Hey! I'm using a quad-core 2.66 Mac Pro, with FCS2 and the latest updates. What confused me is that I've used Photo-JPEG before, and never had a problem with real-time effects... why that menu would suddenly get curtailed is beyond me. I was sure there was a more clever method of doing this that didn't involve building my own mask in Photoshop, and lo and behold, there it was. Great tip, thank you! Jeffby jwilliam - Café LA |
