Re: OT: Tutorials you'd like to read - 16 years agoMedia management! Especially with a bias toward old school AVID people who find it a little bit soft. Something that maybe addresses why re-naming clips gets so messy, why FCP subclips are nearly useless if you want AVID style subclips, and what's the best way to manage media in a project. So I got them cleaned out of my Mac OS library, but Motion is still loading them all up. The fonts are all stored on a hard drive partition, not my font library folder (because, really 6500 is overkill, and I just want to install as needed)... is there a way to get Motion to stop recognizing tby jwilliam - Motion Re: Why did my real-time menu list disappear? - 16 years agoThanks for the tip. Right now, the compressor is set to Photo-JPEG. Dumb (or maybe not so dumb) question - if I change the compressor of the sequence, won't I have to render my footage for playback? I'd rather render my transitional effects then all my footage. Is there some middle-ground compressor that can give me RT playback options and not force me to render everything? Jeffby jwilliam - Café LA Why did my real-time menu list disappear? - 16 years agoHere's a peculiar question... I'm working on a sequence of standard def video, 4 tracks of audio, and I put in a dissolve and get the red bar of rendering over it. That's odd, because it's just a simple dissolve over untreated footage. When I hover my mouse over the red bar, I get a window that says "RT Extreme does not support playback." So I crack open the users manual, and searby jwilliam - Café LA Re: Jitter and frame jumping with the replicator - 16 years agoThanks! Another bug?by jwilliam - Motion Jitter and frame jumping with the replicator - 16 years agoI'm working on my first project in Motion, and slowly, I'm fumbling my way through. Right now, I'm building an effect where I'm keying a figure off a green screen with Primatte. That footage, I'm feeding into a replicator so he quickly expands out of a central point into a 4x4 grid and I've got 16 miniatures of him in my background. I've got the effect built, but there's some frames that juby jwilliam - Motion Re: Media manager puzzle - 16 years agoDerek - That's exactly what happened. I spent another hour trying to alter reel names, selecting and de-selecting options, and considering all kinds of crazy plans (like exporting out each clip individually and then replacing it in the timeline), all to no avail. Good thing drive space is cheap... and this is one to chalk up to the whims of FCP, I guess.by jwilliam - Café LA Re: Media manager puzzle - 16 years agoThanks for the link to the FAQ - it was enlightening, but unfortunately didn't help. I tried assigning reel numbers to everything in the project. The primary source was a ProRes file, but even giving it a tape number didn't help... Interesting idea, and good to know. Also, the render files didn't move the needle at all, there's less than 100MB of them. This is one part client request, and one part my own wants... If nothing else, I want to figure out why my original media files are 119 GB, and the modified media for a 2 minute trailer are 103 GB. Now, the full length, 90 minute HD Prores file that I'm using as my master source is just over 110 gig. The media manage of my 2 minute trailer has an estimated size of 100 gig. Huh? I'm on a system with the Blackmagic Decklink card, and there's an SDI input on the card. If I can find a DA88 with and SDI output, this should be a no-brainer, right? And getting all 8 channels of audio should be easy, right? Or is there some peculiarties with the DA88 format that I should be aware of, that will cause soby jwilliam - Café LA Audio in timeline not playing back - 16 years agoI've got some weirdness happening... Can anyone help me troubleshoot this: Basically, I've got an audio clip in my timeline that won't play back properly. I've sent my sequence to Soundtrack Pro, brought it back into FCP, and am making some tweaks to it there. My problem clip won't play back in the timeline at all -- the solo button doesn't seem to work at all. The discussion there on the Apple board just covers uninstalling Compressor. Is there a similar tutorial for Motion? Or will doing that process for Compressor solve the problem?by jwilliam - Motion Missing codecs in Motion? - 16 years agoWhen I open Motion and start up a new project, where there should be a bunch of pre-sets for the various NTSC and PAL formats, I just have a few options - all HDV and XDVCAM. There is no NTSC standard, or PAL standard. And in my export options - when you want to export something as a still frame, I have no options. No JPEG, no TIFF, no Photoshop, no nothing at all. Before I throw my hands up in despair and begin my mix again, I thought I'd ask around here and see if STP 2 has any kind of auto-save vault? I'm a complete amateur with the multi-track mixing programs, and I've fumbled through in a reasonably decent manner for a first timer. Then my program crashed and I lost several hours of laborious mixing and sound effect replacement. As a videoby jwilliam - Soundtrack Pro Can I re-create this effect in Color? - 16 years agoIn a lot of the hi-def football coverage, the networks (mostly NBC, I believe) occasionally bump back into the game with a still shot of the game in all black and white, with just the a single color in the picture - like the yellow of the Packers uniforms, or the green of the Seahawks uniforms. Can I replicate this effect in Color? Or does it require something more powerful? I'm not too bugged out about having to re-visit the keying when I re-link to hirez. I've got the time and budget set aside for that, and it's only 2 :30 second spots, so I'm willing to bite the bullet on that labor. Would a fast RAID run quicker than internal SATA drives?by jwilliam - Café LA Split track quicktimes? - 16 years agoI'm full of fun questions today. If I have a digibeta with stereo mix audio, and a DA-88 with my split tracks, is there a way to meld them together in Final Cut? I'd love to sync my split-track audio up to my picture (replacing the stereo mix audio with a 4 channel split), and meld that into a new split track master clip that I can work from. I know that FCP isn't fond of going off-line, then on-line, but the next big project I'm bringing in is going to be sourced from three or four hours of greenscreen footage on digibeta. Drive space isn't an issue here, but rendering time is. This project is likely to be all keys, filters, basic motion effects, and more. Jeffby jwilliam - Café LA Renting a digibeta/production insurance? - 16 years agoI'm bidding on a small job; the source tapes are all digibeta, and I'll have to deliver a finished product on digibeta. Renting a digibeta deck is reasonably easy to do... except for the production insurance part of the equation. I've been getting insurance quotes that are far higher than the cost of renting. First, check the format in the quicktime inspector like Andy suggested. Sometimes you can get lucky with a google-hunt and find a download of the codec on the internet. I'm not too familiar with Maya, but a lot of manufacturers will offer their codecs free of charge. I know that AVID and Blackmagic do. Long story short, the codec I needed wasn't available any more, so I had to pilfer the codecs off the machine that created the problematic quicktime.
