OT: Remote Monitoring of JVC GY-HM100U -- Component to Firewire Converter??? - 14 years agoThis isn't exactly about FCP... Just encouraged a client to buy a JVC GY-HM100U - pleased with image quality for the price However... Need to monitor a shoot while out of town - wanted to do so via iChat - but NO FIREWIRE As it's tapeless - using USB out puts it in a kind of hard disk mode (not for monitoring) It has a component out and a mini-jack A/V out Question is - is thereby drtuzi - Café LA Re: Another Puzzler - Sequence only plays 3 frames at a time... - 14 years agoAll sequences in the project are ProRes - original ftg was HDV Got around it by selecting all in the troublesome timeline, copy/paste to new sequence Still - love to know what caused it - bizarro!by drtuzi - Café LA Another Puzzler - Sequence only plays 3 frames at a time... - 14 years agoSeveral sequences open - all same settings - only one started doing this: hit spacebar, and it only plays forward three frames - same with canvas play button - double-click on clips and they play fine unedited in the viewer - but only 3 frames at a time in the timeline - never seen this quirk before... Did I sneeze and accidently activate some hitherto unknown feature? Thanks in Advanceby drtuzi - Café LA De-Interlacing - 14 years agoDoing a 512x288 web video - talking heads were shot in 24p - bringing in manufacturer's product footage from DVD (30 fps interlaced). Captured/extracted with cinematize - Before bringing it into FCP - ran it thru compressor to change frame rate and deinterlace - but no matter which deinterlace settings I apply - I still get some jaggy comb pattern on the almost horizontals. It is not drastiby drtuzi - Café LA WWDC - NO FCS 3 - WTF? - 14 years agoAm I the only one feeling neglected? I don't want to edit video on my iphone - I want to edit video on the long overdue update to FCP! And why no express card on the new 15" MBP? (grumble! grumble!)by drtuzi - Café LA Hit PLAY - everything goes soft and fuzzy - 15 years agoI haven't noticed this before. When the sequence is PAUSED, it looks normal. When I hit the spacebar to PLAY - everything gets a little desaturated and blown out (like 5%). Is this normal? Working in ProRes - does the same if I render YUV or RGB.by drtuzi - Café LA Re: Output: Actual File Sizes (Mac) - 15 years agoahhh! Thanks for correcting my understanding of this. A great help. Apropos of nothing, it reminds of the following trivia I read during a long render: An imperial pint is derived from a cube, four Megalithic inches on all sides. When filled with grain, it's weight is one imperial pound. (Actually - the Megalithic thing makes more sense!) Thanks again, Jeffby drtuzi - Café LA Output: Actual File Sizes (Mac) - 15 years agoI've never fully understood this. Here goes... Been tweaking a project in compressor, client requires it to be under 700 MB. In the finder window, it says 677.4. When I do "get info" it says 677.4 on disk and a value over 710 in parentheses. Trying to adhere to what's agreed to - so... 1. will it fit on a standard cd? 2. What would be the actual size for downloading? 3. Whby drtuzi - Café LA Re: FCP/COMPRESSOR workflow Question - 15 years agohmm... It does update (per my original question) the typo fix is appearing in compressor preview It's just irksome about it - and played dead for some reason anyway - no lost markersby drtuzi - Café LA Re: FCP/COMPRESSOR workflow Question - 15 years agoGotcha - new jargon. I thought if it had a funky name, it must be something I didn't use everyday. Bad news - markers created in FCP only seem to survive if job is sent from the timeline - I couldn't get them to hold up in any kind of QT export (maybe I'm doing something wrong - I checked "all markers" in the export dialog). Seems kinda silly - that you can't place markers in compby drtuzi - Café LA Re: FCP/COMPRESSOR workflow Question - 15 years agowhen you say "qtsc" do you mean a quicktime reference file? So I guess the safest way to work would be: 1. Add markers in FCP timeline 2. Export>Quicktime>Current Settings> NOT self-contained 3. This becomes source file for compression-only job in compressor (FCP free to continue working) Only question is - which I will test first - will chapter markers survive the jby drtuzi - Café LA Re: FCP/COMPRESSOR workflow Question - 15 years agofrom timeline - used compressor's preview window to set/edit markers and set in/outs for short clips to test settings. Then I noticed the graphics typo - would love to not have to start over. Haven't done FCP markers - but as I understand : FCP 6 markers are preserved in COMP 3, right?by drtuzi - Café LA FCP/COMPRESSOR workflow Question - 15 years agoCan't seem to find documentation on how this actually works. I have a half hour of HD ProRes. Sent the sequence to compressor where I did detailed MARKERS - for compression and navigation (stuff I don't want to lose). Did a test encode of a small portion and spotted VIDEO typo in a lower third (that I have to fix in FCP. How do I do this and preserve my markers? (should I have done themby drtuzi - Café LA Director vs DVD Studio Pro - 15 years agoCompleted video project is 28 clips totaling 2.5 hours of 1280 x 720 video (24p). Trying to decide how to sell/distribute. It's a download only product (no physical media, but that might come into play later - but always meant to be viewed on a computer) It's all about viewing the video and I just want basic navigation: a main menu, perhaps a button set between each clip (replay/play next/main meby drtuzi - DVD Studio Pro Re: HD Log & Capture Questions - 15 years agoHDV is a crappy codec, can we all just agree on that? I'm tired of being disappointed by it. Half the frame will be perfectly exposed and crisp, then where it fades into what should be deep and stately shadows - you get NOISE. It's horrible. My question for this learned group: I want the best possible 1280x720p (24fps). What are the best results you've seen in terms of Camera/codec? (by drtuzi - Café LA Re: HD Log & Capture Questions - 15 years agoI agree with Joey - I feel a lot a safer with prores - HOWEVER - a major drag that I have not found a way around is the fact that you don't get a proper log and capture window when using the HDV-to-ProRes capture preset -- it seems like you can only capture your footage as one ginormous block (a la "capture now". Am I missing something? Enlighten me, Joey!by drtuzi - Café LA Green Anomaly(?) - 15 years agothis is a new one -- 1280x720 sequence, Prores, best render settings -- same as always -- drop a motion file on top of background footage (again same setting that have always worked for me) and when I render, there's a green rectangle taking up the lower left quarter of the frame (!) It's solid, but with regular jagged spikes on top, like a kid's drawing of tall grass - and a thin verticalby drtuzi - Café LA Re: FCP Audio Levels - TYPO! - 15 years agoThanks all, for the info. I've been using FCP for years and never opened the audio mixer! There was always another guy to figure that out - which is the problem here - I'm on my own with audio. I meant to say -2 as the ceiling - not -0.2 do you think that's still too hot? It's not dialogue or any kind of naturalistic mix It's straight instructional VO narration - bit of music for introby drtuzi - Café LA FCP Audio Levels - 15 years agoDoing a project for the web, so audio's mixed a little high - In Soundtrack Pro, there's a hard limiter keeping peaks below -0.2 dB. And everything sounds great there. But when I bring it back to FCP - it's not clipped exactly - but it sounds a little more ragged - When I export to QT - everything sounds fine again in QT player. anyone notice this? Is there a difference in the way theseby drtuzi - Café LA Re: Blurry and Fuzzy Imports - 15 years agoThanks, Joey - Actually not compressed - but window magnified to 200% so I could see what was going on with both. And yes, it was a custom preset. I solved the mystery and I'll post it here (and at at the other forum I posted on) in case anyone else falls down this weird little rabbit hole. It's a screen capture project, w/ source footage 1344 x 840. Lots of transitions and motion files. Now Client wants a couple of changes in Narration... Basically I want to overwrite the audio, and not change a pixel of video I assume - 1. Create new sequence with settings to match old video, add old video, add new audio 2. The only way I could make it go away was to go to SYS PREFS>SECURITY>FIREWALL and check ALLOW ALL INCOMING CONNECTIONS at the top of the pane not the most secure solution - but nothing else workedby drtuzi - Café LA Re: Maddening BatchMonitor.app warning - 15 years agoWow - nothing's working. I've tried everything from sys prefs>qmaster to Batch monitor prefs, to firewall settings - it's popping up even more vehemently now - I must have made it angry... I'm not even trying to do any distributed processing - oh jeez! want to type more info - but - aw gahd! - every third key I type - I have to deal with that f%32*!! warning - I feel like that guy on LOSTby drtuzi - Café LA Re: Maddening BatchMonitor.app warning - 15 years agoI tried that and it didn't work - is that because a job is already in progress and the old settings still apply?by drtuzi - Café LA Maddening BatchMonitor.app warning - 15 years agoSo you send the job to compressor, and you can't even (for instance) post a short question on LAFCPUG without being interrupted 97 times by "Do you want the application "BatchMonitor.app" to accept incoming network connections?" Doesn't matter if you hit deny or allow - it just keeps popping up. Over and Over and Over again. How do I make this go away? Please. My sanityby drtuzi - Café LA COPY/PASTE FADES? - 15 years agoYou know the fade-ins/fade-outs you create by dragging from upper corners of a clip in the project timeline? Is it possible to copy them and paste them to multiple clips? "paste Special" doesn't seem to allow it.by drtuzi - Soundtrack Pro Maybe I'm blind, but... - 15 years agoCan't seem to find this preference/setting I know how to disable frame blending in the inspector>properties>timing pane but is there a way to make the default for all new projects and exports from FCP: frame blending=none so I don't have to worry/wonder if I remembered to do it or not? Thanks in advanceby drtuzi - Motion Frame Stuck - 15 years agoposted about this last month Gerard suggested I'd accidentally switched to alpha - but I can assure you nothing has been changed. And the problem is ongoing. It only happens when I send part of the timeline to compressor. I do my outputting there. When I return to fcp, the frame is locked - I get audio - but the frame will not change in the canvas, even if I switch to another tab in the timby drtuzi - Café LA |
