Re: Hard Drive Exchange - 18 years agoIn the regular ATA days, I heard nothing but bad things about Maxtor, ask Ken Stone about them. OTOH, the times, they are a changin'. Our buddies over at Bare Feats report that the Maxtor SATA drives are one of the fastest, best performing SATA drives. From a reliability and customer service standpoint, WD is the best drive on the market but as far as speed, throughput, etc. the new Maxtors areby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: Camera Repair - 18 years agoI have had very good results lately from VTR Service on Burbank Blvd. in Burbank. They just repaired two of our DVX-100As and put new heads into our DSR-45. They only do pro VTRs and cameras. The place I have been producing for is all AVID, save for my lone FCP system (but I am not an editor here, just a producer) and I have to say, after living in an all AVID world for the past 8 months, I like AVID and AVID is more stable, overall, than FCP. While we don't have a Nitris here, we do have 10 edit bays with Xpress DV and two Media Composer Meridiby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: Mixing brands - 18 years ago"Not trying to be too harsh here, but the "each different binder residue reacts chemically with the other brand, creating a sticky "goo"" line of argument seems thin to me." Hi Kit: I will chime in on this, it's happened to me twice and the only culprit could have been was the binder issue. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for when it comes to stuff like this. Best, Danby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: Camera Filter Recommendations - 19 years agoHiya: The more years I spend doing this, the more I am looking for creative, flexible solutions to our problems in creating the images we want to. As the owner of two camcorders and about 50 glass and resin filters, there is another way to appproach the camera/filter dilemma although many DPs will flame me for saying this. Buy this set of filters: For all intents and purposes, these 55mm filby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: Sony HDV? Does ZU1 rock? - 19 years agoHi: The Panasonic HVX-200 will be available "Autumn 2005" according to the Panasonic P2 website. I take this to mean December 31st and figure the retailers will actually be able to deliver them in January although I think that the initial release will sell out almost immediately, there are tens of thousands of us eagerly awaiting this camera. Best, Danby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: Sony HDV? Does ZU1 rock? - 19 years agoWe use both the DVX-100A (we have 4 of them here) and the Z1. IMHO, the Sony makes decent-looking interlaced, highly compressed HDV with noticeable motion artifacting. The DVX-100A makes slightly better looking 24P images in NTSC with no motion artifacting. The Sony CineFrame mode is a joke, it looks like hell, the motion is all wrong. We've only had the Z1 for a month and we are selling it, Iby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: DSR500 vs Sony's new little HDVCAM - 19 years agoSimple choice, is your end product PAL or HD? If it's NTSC, I think that the DSR-500 will give you a better end result, it has less compression and a lens that probably costs more than the Z1 itself. If your end product is HD, go with the Z1, it shoots HD whereas the DSR-500 would need to be up-converted. Good luck! Danby Dan Brockett - Café LA Jib Arm Rental In LA? - 19 years agoHi all: I am doing a tabletop shoot this weekend. We will be using the new Sony Z1 HDV camera and I need to rent a small/light jib arm, perhaps with a 6' reach. Don't want to go the normal Jimmy Jib, weighs 300 lbs route, not with a 4lb camera, doesn't make sense. Who rents small, light DV-oriented jib arms in LA? I have calls in to Abel Cinetech (so far, no return call) and Hollywood Studio Reby Dan Brockett - Café LA |
