no audio through speaker monitors

Is this a common situation? I have FCP Studio, and when editing in FCP, all is fine, but, when I fire up Soundtrack or DVD Pro, the audio goes through my computer. Do I need a set of USB connecting computer speakers?

Equipment: Power G5, FW connection to Datavideo Dac-10 to Yamaha PS-3 self powered speakers.

Any help appreciated!

In Soundtrack Pro go in to Preferences and under the recording tab there is a monitor out drop down menu that should have whatever device you are using in FCP for your audio out.

Computer speakers shouldn't use USB -- it's a waste of a slot. Check your master Sound settings under System Preferences, as well. The reason you can get audio output from FCP is because FCP has its own Output Device preferences, video and audio.

I've gone through the prefs, and the only app that sees a FW device is FCP. Why the rest of the Studio apps don't recognize a FW audio device is beyond me. Could this be a preference trashing situation?

Applications>Utilities>Audio/Midi Setup (for MacOS X)

derek-I use a HarmonKardon USB speaker among others and use a USB hub.
