imovie to fcp

Could someone please help me regarding importing a clip from imovie to Fcp? I have a 30 sec imovie clip which once imported into fcp turns out to be the entire one hour movie which needs 4 hours of rendering before I can use the 30 sec clip that I need. I finally had to capture the 30 sec clip directly via camera into fcp. But there must be another way... Right?

Just keep in mind that this works best in only the most current versions of iMovie and FCP.
