Hi, I have just logged 5 tape shot in 24P but most of my project will be from footage shot on a PD150. I am confused about which Capture settings to use. I have selected: Easy Setup 24P (23.98) for the Sequence setting but I don't see this option available when I go to batch capture. Should I using the regular DV-NTSC for the Capture settings and Sequence settings since I have both sources of material?

If you want to edit in 23.98fps, you'd either have to reverse telecine or remove pulldown frames on the fly. Chi-Ho told me that the latter isn't available unless you're using a capture card. As for reverse telecine/pulldown removal, I think FCP has this function but I've never tried it; I use Cinema Tools and so do many others.

However, if your end product is going to end up on video, DVD or the web, there's no reason to edit in 23.98fps as far as I know. 24p footage can simply be treated as 29.97fps footage, captured in 29.97fps and edited in a normal 29.97fps timeline.

Thank you Derek! That simplifies allot for me as I am staying in DVD.

Actually, if you intend on staying in DVD then you ought to edit 23.98 - you will wind up with a 24P DVD which looks a lot nicer when played on a DVD progressive player hooked up to a HD progressive monitor. And you will also be 29.97 compatible.

If you edit 29.97, you lose 24P DVD capability.

So, if you shoot 24P, use Cinema Tools to reverse telecine. Or use a capture card to capture 23.98 on the fly. If you shoot 24 PA, FCP can reverse telecine on the fly via FW capture usinf the proper easy set up.

Edit 23.98 on FCP.
Use compressor to make 24P M2V asset files.
Use DVD Studio Pro to make your 24P DVD.

Good luck.

But didn't Tony say that:

"most of my project will be from footage shot on a PD150"

If that means that he's going to have a majority of footage at 29.97, then he should probably do as Derek suggested and work in a 29.97 timeline. The 24p stuff will still retain that film-ish look and he won't have the issue of converting all the 29.97 footage to 23.98.

If all the footage was 24p and you were going to DVD, then Mitch's recommendation is worth it.

Thank you! That's quite a statement; that a PD150 can look like 24P. I will check out your Demo and definately consider your filters when I get close to finshing. ---Sometime in February.
