I was warned and it has happenned...Disk failure - a Lacie external hard drive (250 gb) with a slightly dodgy (loose) ac input. The devise lost power and will not remount. We do not have disk warrior. Solutions greatfully accepted.

Ummm. Buy Disk Warrior?

If the unit lost power while it was writing something to the platters, that segment of the disk, at least, is trashed.

Start making plans for what you would do if that drive never woke up again.

Is the power cord loose in the socket, or is the whole assembly loose even though the cord is tight? If it's loose inside, anybody with a screwdriver and soldering iron might be able to repair it enough to get the lights to come on again.

Do the lights come on now and it doesn't mount, or is it completely dead?

Can you remove the disk drive from the enclosure and mount it inside a MAC?

I have had Firewire failures that were attributed to the bridge card and the drive was fine.

LaCie, again?
Got lemons? Make lemonade. As John says, very likely you'll be able to salvage the hard-drive by installing as an internal.

1. GET DISK WARRIOR 3.0.3 for Tiger (not having it is no excuse).

2. Unplug the LaCie from the wall for 10 minutes then plug it back & run Disk Utility to mount it.

3. Try what foley suggested - take out drives & mount them inside the machine.

4. In my experience...it's not the enclosure that $uck$ or is problematic with LaCie's...it's the drives. AVOID LaCie's altogether (save yourselves inevitable grief).

5. G-RAID...G-RAID...G-RAID...G-RAID
