DVCPROHD and FCP 5 - EDL Problems?

Hey All,

I'm working on a sizable studio feature. They shot on the Panasonic Varicam at 720p24. We've loaded the HD material into FCP 5.0.4 over firewire using the Panasonic 1200 deck.

I'm familiar with this workflow having done this on 2 features using FCP 4.5 HD.

When I try to export an EDL, the source time code numbers are way wrong. Not even close. Wrong hours, wrong minutes, wrong seconds. Time code in the browser columns are correct and if we try to recapture material, everything works perfectly fine. So FCP 5 knows the correct time code.

But the EDL is erroneous. If anyone out there reads this and has DVCPROHD material 720p24 from a varicam shoot on their system and is using FCP 5.0.4, please try making an EDL and let me know if it's accurate.

Thanks.

Mitch

What settings are you using for your EDL? That sould help me try to replicate the issue.

WOW. I just did a CMX-3600, Master, audio merged, B-edit, file names only and while the first three clips are right, not one after that is. Clip names are right, but the timecode is all wrong. ALL WRONG.

What is this for? How are you onlining?

I did a little test - modified the timecode of a clip to 00:01:00:00 - 1 minute even. Cut the whole clip in a sequence and made an EDL.

Source in should read: 00:01:00:00
Source in instead reads: 00:02:30:00

We're getting a multiplication factor of2.5. I can see that double the time which is explained by counting 60 frames instead of 30, but I can't understand the additiona 1/2 time.

Anyway, seems to be a FCP 5 issue. This is not a problem in FCP 4.5. I can put the same media in 4.5 and produce a good EDL.

Whoa. How does that happen?

I might have suggested it was counting fields instead of frames, but since you're probably editing at 24 or 23.98fps, and it still doesn't explain a factor of 2.5...

Editing at 24 would explain a factor of 2.5 as that would equal 60.

Mine wasn't a factor of 2.5, it was WAY off.

Real: 11;31;47;15
EDL: 00;45;13;12

REAL: 03;45;22;00
EDL: 21:34:14:00

Yeah, in 4.5 they exported just fine. What the hell happened?

Time to send feedback. Sounds like a bug to me

Spoke with Scot Barbour at Apple. This seems to be an issue in FCP 5 when capturing DVCPROHD over firewire. It sets the timebase at 60. The solution is to highlight all your source clips and modify the time base to 24. Then you have to convert the EDL from 24->30 using Cinema Tools.

If you want to do any recapturing, make sure you modify the clips back to 60.

This only occurs when capturing DVCPROHD over firewire. There is no problem if you capture using Kona or any other card.

Thanks Scot Barbour.

Thanks Mitch. I had this EXACT same problem a few months ago.
