Maxtor...not reliable for media.
Don't agree.

Sorry Shane.

Don't agree with you.

I edit HDV and it is fine.

Shane's spot-on...it may work for you now, but the majority of maxtors don't last. You're just lucky, my friend. Maxtor = certain death...and it comes on instantly with a brief period of winding & clicking...then your HD icon falls into the Bermuda Triangle never to be seen again. BTW...LaCie firewire drives that fail - around 75% of those have maxtor drives in them. The other 25% have western digital in them (also certain DEATH). Those of you that use them and like them...better back your $hit up before you learn the truth.

Good luck with your project in the coming months!

APPLE G5 MAXTOR

Hey boys,

Guess that is why APPLE ships with MAXTOR.

Hmmm guess they expect all the drives in millions of G5's to go down.

Luck is not needed when U RAID 50!

Best.

It's a different production line and different QC between the Maxtors that go into Macs and the Maxtors that are sold as consumer-grade FW and USB drives.

All drives are not made equal, even if they have the same brand name.

Internal 500GB

Deb,

Ya, I am not a big fan of external drives FW or USB. Just RAID, fibre channel.

But these internal SATA are the fastest, sure 7200 is marginal, and they just came out with the 300 GB 10K drives.

But they perform HDV with Partitions of 250's and formatted after each project for me.

I'm just sayin' that the Maxtor drives inside the Mac are from a unique production line.

I'm sure other products have those same drives, but they are not the bulk of the Maxtors out on the market.

Most of the the issues folks have with Maxtors that fail are from other production lines, and these are not the same drives they put into Macs.

I personally have no opinion on Maxtors. I've never had one fail on me, but the only ones I've owned have all been inside Macs.

Almost every Maxtor I've had has crashed, died, gave up the ghost...went plates up...etc.

Love the Other World Computing external DV Drives...very reliable...as well as Weibetech....

But best of best - hands down (outside the Apple Raids..) G-Raid....rock solid - DV Raid solution... Andy

My maxtors (5) are all solid after 3 years in my G4 (tempo ATA adapter and raid).

Never had a Maxtor but I have had one of two LaCie 250GB Triple Extremes go south on me. Technically it still works, just not all the time! I invested in Promax after that.

For media I wouldn't want to use a single 500GB drive anyways.

From video engineers I have talked to, they say that the 500GB drives have more platters but not neccesarily more read/write heads.

The recommendation I've gotten is to use 250GB drives.

I just recently had an external Maxtor die on me.
Other professionals I know in the industry steer clear of them with a vengence !!
