FCP - Shake - After Effects

I thought I'd follow up on an earlier discussion regarding the
gamma shifts and render engines in these apps.

So I took one of our Ads into each of these apps and rendered them out using the exact same codec that it came as. (Uncompressed QT 4:2:2. Interlaced upper field)

The results were quite interesting...

FCP and Shake both look exactly like the original file.
The After Effects render is very slightly different.
Some of the detail is gone and the edges of some colors are jagged.

I could post still frames if there is a way of doing that here?

Easy to post picts here as long as they are uploaded to some place on the web. Easy way of doing this is to register for free at photo bucket

upload your picts.

copy the image tag code they give you automatically

paste that code here

Thanks Mike.

DISREGARD THIS IS INCORRECT.
THEY ALL LOOK THE SAME.
I WILL DO SOME COLOR RENDER TESTS NEXT.

Here is the link

I have used my amazing graphic skills to draw arrows to the most apparent sections.
Take note as well of how the whole image is a bit softer.
Some detail is gone.

Look at the edges of the windows and the table top.

The effect is pretty much the same as if you look at an image in photoshop at 66.7%

I dont know why this is.
Could also be that there is an easy fix?

can you post the original for comparison, and maybe the shake or fcp one as well?

The AE clip is not interpolated correctly.

"The AE clip is not interpolated correctly."

Not sure I follow you.
They have all been treated exactly the same.

(They were anamorphic so I have resized them to accomodate for that but the artefacts were there before)

Very simple. Select the clip in AE and hit Command/F (Interpret Footage dialog box) and make sure your clip's Field Order is interpreted correctly. Here is a random frame pulled from my HDR-HC1 HDV camera:

After Effects = No Fields interpolated:

After Effects = Upper Fields Interpolated:

You are right.

I thought you were refering to the interpolation in Photoshop when I resized the image.
Funny thing is the footage is supposed to be upper field first so thats how I rendered them out from all apps.
Changing it to none i AE makes the clip exactly the same as Shake and FCP.
Not sure why this is but obviously a mistake from my end since I did not check different settings.

So at this stage the results are the same from all apps.

The next step now is to take that ad and apply levels and contrast and render out again.
My guess is that FCP will apply "dirt" to the image while AE and Shake will both render very clean results.
