HELP Please!: Need to Run FCP 5 on G4-500 Dual
May 15, 2006 11:47PM
I have a G4-500 Dual that I want to use as a capture box - I just installed 2 300 GB seagate drives and a Sonic RAID controller set up for striping..

I installed FCP5 no problem, however, when I try to launch FCP5, I get an error message saying FCP requires AGP Quartz Extreme compatible card. The G4 has "ATY, Rage128Pro"

I did some searching and found a hack that allowed FCP4.5 to run with PCI cards by editing the Info.plist file inside of the Contents folder, but that hack does not seem to work with FCP5.

i.e. delete:
<key>AELRequiredIOPCIDevice</key>
<string>AGP Quartz Extreme</string>

All I want to do on the G4 is open/create an FCP5 project file, capture video and nothing else. Can ANYONE tell me if there is a way to use FCP5 on the G4 short of a Graphics card upgrade?

I have been able to this just fine on G4-733

Baring that, is there a utility that will I can capture video with that is compatible with FCP.

Thanks

"Baring that, is there a utility that will I can capture video with that is compatible with FCP."

an earlier version of FCP should work.

Well, I still have my Boxed FCPHD, so, I guess I will have to go that route if I have no other options.

Problem is, EVERYTHING require Quartz Extreme, even iMovie these days.

Can, anyone recommend a vendor for second hand Graphics cards?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The machine needs to be an AGP equipt video card and the one you are talking about isn't and can never be! Your's was a PCI video card at the time it shipped and there were no Quartz Extreme video cards.

According to the System Profiler, the card I have is AGP:

ATY,Rage128Pro:

Chipset Model: ATY,Rage128Pro
Type: Display
Bus: AGP
Slot: SLOT-A
VRAM (Total): 16 MB
Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
Device ID: 0x5046
Revision ID: 0x0000
ROM Revision: 113-72701-130
Displays:
L1750S:
Resolution: 1280 x 1024 @ 75 Hz
Depth: 32-bit Color
Core Image: Not Supported
Main Display: Yes
Mirror: Off
Online: Yes
Quartz Extreme: Not Supported

So, basically, I should be able to install a replacement AGP card and be good to go.

Any advice on where I can pick up and affordable card?

Did you not read the line that says:
"Quartz Extreme: Not Supported"?
Also according to the Apple system requirements for FCP5.
General System Requirements
Macintosh computer with 867MHz or faster PowerPC G4, PowerPC G5, or Intel Core Duo processor
HD features require 1GHz or faster single or dual processors (authoring HD DVDs requires a PowerPC G5 or Intel Core Duo processor)
512MB of RAM; 1GB of RAM for HD features (2GB recommended)
Display with 1024-by-768 (or higher) resolution
AGP Quartz Extreme or PCI Express graphics card

???? Am I being Flamed? If so, what did I do to deserve that?

As stated quite plainly earlier, I am not going to use FCP for anything but capturing video. FCP installed just fine on this system, so it meets any hardware requirements tested for by the installer. The only problem I have is with Quartz Extreme, whose functionality I could care less about as I will not need ANY of that functionality on this box (G4-500 Dual), but FCP will not launch without it.

I am currently using FCP5 for capturing on a single processor G4-733 just fine and it works perfectly. It has a NVIDEO GeForce2 MX card, which is compatible, so I don't have any problems launching FCP5 there. Which shows that ALL the specs you quoted are irrelevant.

So, really all I need is a compatible graphics card. Do you have any suggestions as to where I can find and old NVIDEO GeForce2 MX, or ATI RADEON that I can put into this Mac? Would you have one that you could part with?

I really do know what I am doing here, so there really is not any need to ridicule me.

My post certainly wasn't meant to flame or ridicule you. I was just pointing out some general requirements as per the apple website. I realize people have found ways to circumvent apples general requirements for running certain programs but they usually run into problems down the line with incompatibility issues.
If you really do know what you are doing here, then good luck with it.

Thanks for the reply Frank. No offense taken. I was initially taken aback, but all's good.

But, I still need advice on a source for a 2nd hand AGP card. :-)

I got 25 hits on versiontracker.com for "video capture" - I would just go through them 1 by 1.

I personally use FTV as I video monitor on live shoots and find it very handy - not sure about its capturing capabilities though.

Good luck Gary, I too hate it when a machine becomes obselete - anyone want my Powerbook G4867 that I paid $4000 for 4 years ago?

I still use it every day! smiling smiley
