My Black Background is Green(?)

My Black Background is Green(?)

For some reason when my timeline indicator is not over any media, my canvas shows green. My slugs are also green. Has anyone heard of this?

I've completely wiped out my hard drive and reinstalled all my software, and I still have the green.

Please help if you can.

Thanks,

Eddie

Bright green or a very dark green?

If it's a very dark green, the monitor could be off.

Surf to that. When that shows up in Safari or FireFox, it should be perfectly gray.

No, this is bright green. I'm sure it's not my monitor.

Thanks,

Eddie

I had this happen to a user I administrate who had terrible workflow issues... media on the desktop, etcetera. I cleaned up his mess and it was still happening. Trashed his prefs (http://www.lafcpug.org/trashing_fcp_prefs.html), and the issue resolved itself.

I don't know what causes it.

Best of luck.

I'm pretty tidy. I regularly repair permmissions and keep things in folders and not on my desk top.

I've restalled my system and I've trashed my preferences many times.

Your the first person I've run across that has ever heard of this problem.

Thanks for your input.

<<<I've restalled my system and I've trashed my preferences many times.>>>

That's just so wrong.

These machines, the operating system, and Final Cut are normally stable for years. I think we've had to repair permissions on our main production machine twice in the years we've had it. We have three Final Cut machines, soon to be four, and they just don't have massive problems like you appear to be having.

Either you've got an unstable machine because of bad hard drives or memory issues, or something like that, or you're trying to run it wrong. One more, you could have troubles with crossed versions although this doesn't sound like the right symptoms.

Did you get this machine from a supplier with everything installed? Are you upgrading from an older system? There are no numbers so far anywhere in the conversation. Tell us a little bit about your life.

Hi Koz,

I'm not sure what you mean by "running it wrong". I hope I'm doing that.

Also, I'm not sure what "crossed versions" are. Can you explain?

I bought my "Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5" out of the box. I installed all the software and it's been running like a top for a year and half or so.

Any other ideas?

Thanks a lot for you input.

This happens. Just yesterday, a machine I was working on had bars and tone show up as green. A simple FCP restart resolved the issue. But if it doesn't work for you, then trashing the prefs would be the next step.

We run 6 FCP stations, and the "green" issue has popped up a couple of times in the last 3-4 months. Typically slug, black, and bars are all green - they are all generated from still images and the process seems to get messed up.

Trashing preferences always seems to fix it - we use FCP Rescue to record a clean and properly working set of preferences, then use it again when things go green to restore the prefs. It's easier than doing the job manually!

Hi youngeddie,

I think Koz is referring to this:

Rules for posting on this forum:
No rants or rages. Be specific. Tell us your version of FCP, your version of your OS, your model of Mac, and how much ram you have. Tell us your brand of Hard Drive, capture Card. Give us more information than you think we need.

Let us know!

Hello and thanks for your responses to my "Green" problem.

Please let me try and get just a little more information.

1. I've trashed my preferences numorous times. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. I'm trashing my "com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist", also the 5.0 prefs, POA Cache and OBJ Chase. Did I miss anything?

2. Where do I get FCP Rescue?

Thanks! It's really great to tap into such a resposive and helpful FCP community.

Maybe you have your View Menu set to View > Background > Green?

If you still feel good about this, then we're not trying near hard enough. I
won't rest until somebody's bleeding.

I'm going to wear my "Wacky Thinking" hat.

Can you export and view some of the green video on something other than your computer? Make a DVD and view it on your mom's TV or your other iBook. Is it still green?

I'm betting not.

Hi Guys,

My background is set to black. Thanks for asking.

My projects are coming out fine because they don't show the places where the timeline indicator isn't over media. The green isn't too much of a problem, it's just annoying.

Thanks,

Eddie

Hello again!

It's gone! The Green is gone!!!

I trashed my preferences again (which I've done many times in the past) and this time... NO GREEN!!!

Thanks!

The case is closed.

Certainly not. People who get this once tend to keep getting it.

<<<I trashed my preferences again>>>

And it didn't work the first fifty times you tried it because.....?

Hi Koz,

Yes, someone please tell me why it didn't work when I trashed the FCP preference the first 50 times. I would love to know that.

I'm just very glad to see back in the background again.

Now I'm going to learn how to us FCP Resue while everything is stable.

Thanks,

Eddie

Did you use the right method for trashing preferences?

Even if you did, many software problems aren't consistent. And I agree with Koz -- if you have an unstable system, you shouldn't be rejoicing, you should be backing up and planning on what you do the next time this happens. Fifty preference trashes with one single, anomalous success is not a good sign to me.
