Clips squeezed in timelinePosted by torita
Select a clip and get its Item Properties. What does that say?

Have you selected the timeline and got its properties?
(Not only the clip) As someone mentioned the timeline is likely set to anamorphic. If not... Double click the clip on the timeline. Go into the motion tab in the for that clip in the canvas. Go to the "distort" tab and click on the red "X" on the right side. This should un-distort the file in the timeline. (If not, open the distort tab and manually slide it until it fits. My guess is that you want to select +33) Then go back to the timeline, select the adjusted clip, press Apple + C. Select all your other distorted clips and contril click. Select "paste attributes." Tick "distort" only. Voila! Johan Polhem Motion Graphics www.johanpolhem.com
"No, you want Distort - Aspect Ratio at 0." DOH....and double doh. Derek. It is obviously not correct now. If it is already set to 0 and looks wrong then you can distort this manually until it fits. I am almost certain that the timeline and the clip have different settings somehow however. Johan Polhem Motion Graphics www.johanpolhem.com

Black bars on the side, as Andy mentions, generally happen when you put non-anamorphic media into an anamorphic timeline. Once the clip is put into the timeline, a Distort - Aspect Ratio setting of 33.33 is mistakenly applied to the clip. You set it to 0 to restore the correct proportions for the non-anamorphic clip, and you remove the anamorphic 16:9 flag from the timeline. Unless his timeline is set to the wrong frame size (eg. 820x480), in which case you create a new timeline and put the settings right before you edit. You do *not* mess with the clip to fit a timeline that isn't right for the media you're editing. That's like slicing off your ankle to make it fit your shoe.
Someone here is really slow and its not me.
Thats exactly what I said. Its probably the composition that is incorrect, or the clip has the wrong setting, either way they are not the same and thats why the clip is distorted in the timeline. If he says the settings onthe timeline and the composition are the same THEN distort it if all else fails. But i'm over it. As usual discussing anything with you on this forum is a painful experience to say the least. Post Edited (07-24-06 22:58) Johan Polhem Motion Graphics www.johanpolhem.com
He hasn't checked his Sequence Settings yet:
> On both the clip from the bin and the clip on the timeline He's reporting black bars on left and right: > When I drop them in the canvas to the timeline they are squished with > black on the left and right. Let's say if he does already have Distort - Aspect Ratio at 0 and he's getting black bars on the side. If he applies a Distort - Aspect Ratio of 33 on top of that, as you suggested, he'll get even wider bars on left and right.
Hi I'm here and female. The timeline and the clips in the bin appear to have the same properties, so I can't imagine why they'd be different unless they say so. I am away from my editing computer (at the day job) so I'll be unable to respond with specifics until this evening EST.
Thanks for your help. I've captured 14 hours of footage and would prefer not to distort unless necessary. Victoria

Now select your timeline and press APPLE-0, and list *every* single setting here. Don't just tell us "everything looks right" -- we may be able to spot things that you're missing. Because it is impossible to have the problem you're describing if the clip and timeline have completely identical settings, unless the footage was shot that way -- and that's not the issue, because you say the clips look fine in the Viewer.
Hey Guys,
You are right! I was looking at all the specifics and missed the 16:9 check box under sequence settings. I appreciate all of your assistance. Guess I was looking to hard in the wrong places. Thanks again! By the way, the doc is called A Moving feast and deals with the inception of independent experimental film in the 70's and 80's in Tampa Bay.
