Importing MTS files (HD Files) into Final Cut to edit in SD to get smaller file to render.

We have imported .MTS files from a Canon consumer video. We used a conversion program for the .MTS files to convert them to .mov files. But When we imported to Final Cut (ver 6.06 for intel Mac) they show up as MP4 files and take many hours to render just a few minute sequence on a Mac 2X2 8 gig quad system. Here are our settings.

Capture preset: DV NTSC 48 Khz Anamorphic, although we imported the files, no capture)
Sequence setting: DV NTSC 48 Khz Anamorphic

Is there a better way to convert from MTS to mov to lower the file size? Want to bring in as SD not HD so I can edit without the system freezing or slowing up.

Please advise.

Thanks,

You can use the free Mpeg Streamclip to convert the footage to ProRes SD.

Or DV50...you get more realtime with DV50...believe it or not.
