I need to replace my Radeon 9600 AGP video card. Only going for single display.
Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance. This forum is the best!

Thanks Wayne
Does it just plug into the agp/pci slots or do you have to hook up internal power also?
Also, the 9800 is fine with Motion 2.0?

The ATI X 800 is now going for about $350.00 to $400.00 they are great cards and motion 2 runs very well.

ATI officially announced the Radeon X800 XT Mac Edition graphics card for PowerMac G5s. The Mac X800 XT has one Dual Link DVI and one ADC port and supports the Apple 30-inch Cinema HD Display as well as legacy Apple ADC Displays and (with included adapter) VGA monitors. The X800 XT features 16 pixel pipelines, six vertex pipelines and 256MB of GDDR3 memory. List price is $499 (Old Price) ($100 less than the Mac Nvidia 6800 Ultra, although it can drive two 30in displays). Since 99.9% of Mac users won't own two 30in Cinema displays, I think the choice of Dual Link DVI + ADC port makes market sense. (Although I was never a big fan of ADC (powering a monitor from the computer P.S.), there are a lot of those displays out there and having a native ADC port saves having to buy a $100 or so DVI/ADC adapter w/Pwr Supply.)

It looks like the Radeon 9800 requires a power pass thru from the optical drive.
I already have a sonnet g5 jive taking power from this location.
Will this be a problem?

Neither the 9800 or the X800 need additional power - I had a 9800 and now an X800 in my Dual 2GHz G5

Get the X800 - 9800 is old hat now and almost half as fast as the X800 - you'll see much better performance in Motion with the X800 but hardly any between the 9600 and 9800

The Radeon 9800 Mac Edition in my G4 needed to be connected to 4-pin Molex type power connector to work.

However, do yourself a favor and get the X800XT or even better an X850XT.

Yes in some G4's you do but not in the G5 and I think Ken mentioned he had a Dual 2GHz G5?

The X850 is a great card

I also overclock my X800 giving about 12% - 25% performance increase although I recommend you be careful doing this as you can burn out your GFX card if you get it wrong.

There is a great piece of overclocking software called ATIccelerator II for all ATi cards here:

Please read all the warnings before you mess around with it though.

I have used it successfully for the last year with no problems at all.
