looking for a filter for text, (not a generator)
September 28, 2006 03:31AM
i need to put some overlay text on some clips,
and i just want to be able to do a batch export of them & keep their original TC & reel#.

an overlay in a sequnce isnt simple enough.
i want to add the text with a filter so it's all in the one clip.

i should know this,
but it's not springing to mind if someone has made this or not.

anyone know?
thanks,
nick

but is there a way to have no timecode?
plus. id rather chose my own font.

or are you suggesting i dive into the effect, and modify the code?

It sounds like if you can find a subtitling plugin that works as a filter rather than a Generator object, that would be the way to go. I'm not sure which plugin does this, though.

I was just playing around and tried out using Channel - Compound Arithmetic with its image well. If you dragged a white text object into the image well, you can then choose Add for white text and Subtract for black text. No drop shadows, though, and not exactly "simple" -- you can paste the Compound Arithmetic filter quickly across multiple clips, but to change the text you'd have to make the card somewhere, then drag it into the image well for each clip. But at least you do get text in filter form, no timecode, and your choice of fonts.

That's what I meant. If you need some help let me know.

hey, derek.

neat idea.
for now it;s one bit of text,
i think i can drop a text generator into an image well?
ideally i;d want a low opacity.

i guess what i really need is a "watermark" filter.
if someone made one of those,
they could make some $$, i reckon.
(there was an post here a few days ago where someone was after something similar, i recall)

andreas,
it's probably beyond me,
certainly time wise!
a guy i know here in melbourne has said he might look into it, too.
he's already made a couple of good filters: a vignette, and a facelight
[www.haiku.com.au]
i know it wouldnt be too hard.
if i was starting somewhere i'd look at the "viewfinder" filter that has a text entry field,
and maybe pull it apart.
dunno.
there's a new-zealand made plugin called "funky timecode" that gives you whatever font you want on your tc...
uh.. dont know where im going with that thought

andreas, is your XML2text plugin a filter or a generator?

cheers,
nick

Oh, that's what you're trying to do?

How come you're not doing it as a normal layer on top? Is it because your show is now one big long clip?

In the above idea I was trying out, if you use white text in the Compound Arithmetic and then switch to Overlay Operator, you should get translucent text.

Yes, you can drop a Text object or Title 3D object into the image well, and you can drop one with lowered opacity as well.

Here's what it looks like when I experimented:

yeah, that;s what i want to do!
the reason i want a filter is i want to batch export a bunch of clips and for them to retain their original TC & reel #

ill see how the generation & render times pan out with your technique.
thanks for experimenting with that,
appreciate it,

nick
