I want to export a still, doctor it in photoshop then stick it back in!Posted by Chris Maher
Import it and drop it into the timeline as you do anything else.

This will seem a little weird, but make sure you stay on a Mac. There are significant problems if your post production tools are on a PC or other platform.
By the way, FCP will insist on re-importing your still as a multi-second clip. You have to go into the preferences and force it to be one frame. Koz
Does After Effects do the same thing? I'm interested in exporting 4 frames, cleaning them and then re-importing them back into FCP5. I'll be using razor blade to separate the four frames.
What shall I export them as so I can clean each frame individually, as tiffs, jpegs, targas -- what?

What's your opinion on PNGs? I worked with an editor awhile back that used them, and not wanting to break his workflow, I adopted it on that project for my non-alpha channel still needs. I saw no disernable issues with them, but I wasn't as deep into that project as I usually get. I think he just did it because that's the default setting for Export Using QuickTime Compression, Still Image. Otherwise, I usually use PSDs or TIFFs...with the occasional PICT thrown in. I'm wondering if PNGs are just as good & can save a few mouse-clicks? deb
I'm not good for an opinion on either PNG or PICT. I have no experience with either one.
However, I do know that TGA and TIFF will fit on all three computing platforms. We settled on TIFF and I don't remember why. On special request we will produce a Targa Sequence for somebody. It happens every couple of months. Koz
Yup...that's how I ended up generally using PSDs or TIFFs...cross-platform needs.
I'll ask a couple of my PC buddies and see of they ever use PNGs....that would be a good thing to test if they're not. I think PNG is a Microsoft-originated format, so I wouldn't imagine it being too out of the ordinary for a PC user to be able to reliably use them... but one never knows! deb
Here's an interesting discussion of the features of each of these formats. It would appear that PNG is well suited to whatever you'd want to do, but is NOT as portable as some others.

Maybe now. But I'm here to tell you it didn't used to. In FCP3, I struggled to import single frame TIFFs. Are you really really sure, or have you had custom defaults set for so long you forgot? Koz
I changed the length of still in preferences as instructed and the whole system is working great.
unfortunately it turns out I can't really smoothly retouch the successive stills well enough to retouch clip this way... magic wand tool way too volatile, and will probably have to get a friend to show me enough in After Effects to do it that way. (before I get over there I may try a more mechanical way of partitioning the image to darken the part that needs darkening. ... but AE is probably what's called for here (trying to darken part of a CU shot, camera moves a wee bit, actor's head moves a bit)
none! I wish someone would address my other thread
