keyframes in nested seq?

Why am I having trouble playing keyframes in a nested sequence? I have a still image that increases scale and also has a transition at the beginning and end. I have put the keyframes well before and after the begin and end of the xtion. The sequence plays fine.

but when that sequence is nested into another, the keyframes are no longer outside the transition periods, so the image jumps in size.

Why is this?

If you copy paste the stuff from the nested sequence into your original timeline (so, instead of having the nest, you have the media inside the nest) - what happens?

It must be some kind of real-time/performance issue during playback because when I render the file out to mov or mpg it plays fine.
