I have 18 audio tracks, and my main tracks (1+2) for dialogue seem to be blocked until one of the music tracks ends. I tried re-copying the tracks into another copy of my sequence, and got the dialogue back but lost one of the music tracks.

Are you rendering your audio?

And check your levels. If you're mixing your sound too hot, some sounds will disappear until you've lowered the levels to an acceptable level.

maybe you need to increase the amount of real time audio tracks FCP uses.

that's on the first pane of your user prefs (option Q)

Thanks, Derek and Nick

Both of your replies fixed part of the problem. 1 of my instrumental audio tracks was too hot.

Increasing # of RT audio tracks helped the other problem, and will help more as I add drums and brass tracks.

I have rendered parts of the audio, but it does not always prompt me to do so.

Ah yes, the classic nugget. Render All takes care of enough audio renders for you to hear the sound tracks, generally, but a full audio render involves an Audio Mixdown (OPTION-APPLE-R).
